Lyrics:
New York niggaz got crazy game
But outta town niggaz is all the same
Brooklyn niggaz get crazy loot
That's because when it's beef, they ain't scared to shoot
Harlem niggaz know how to play
Mack the 600, gettin' crazy pay
Niggaz outta Queens got shit on lock
Strapped with the glock, runnin' up in yo' spot
But if it wasn't for the Bronx
This rap shit probably never would be going on
So tell me where you from? Uptown, baby, uptown, baby
We gets down, baby, up for the crown, baby
We gets down, baby, up for the crown, baby

That's a messed-up story, though. Peter and Tariq never saw a penny in songwriting royalties because Becker and Fagen insisted that they be listed as the only songwriters--for a five-second sample. They didn't really want "Black Cow" to be sampled, so they made the most outrageous demand they could--and Peter and Tariq went along.

@@kimikodickerson3902 Three reasons. One this song is sampled from a record by the group Steely Dan, and Steely Dan took 100% publishing and writing credit for this song so they never get paid for it, even if it's aired in movies, TV, etc. Steely Dan raped them. Two Peter said in an interview that they rode the momentum of song for too long and by the time their album was released it flopped, and afterwards their record label (Columbia) turned their backs on them. That and the Steely Dan situation made them bitter. Three Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz were affiliated with a Bronx street legend named Pistol Pete and his crew Sex, Money, Murder. S.M.M. was taken down by the feds in 1998 and Tariq made a few references to Pistol Pete on the album. He even made a song dedicated to him which was used in court during the SMM trial. Columbia Records wanted nothing to do with them. That's why they disappeared by the end of 1998

I'm from the Bay Area. I remember when this song came out, Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz made a remix just for the Bay that some of you might remember. They replaced the boroughs of NYC with cities in the Bay like San Jose, Oakland, etc but otherwise the song was the exact same. KMEL would play it on the radio all day every day. This was fresh off the heels of the east/west beef. That was really dope of them to show love like that.

@mkygod
@mkygod 10 жыл бұрын
No, a one hit wonder is an act that comes out with a big hit, which makes people wonder why they didn't have other hits. It has nothing to do with whether a song is good or not.

@bigjake707 10 жыл бұрын

@mkygod
@mkygod 10 жыл бұрын
No, a one hit wonder has to do with the artist, not the actual song. If an artist only has 1 successful song, then they are deemed one hit wonders. Read the wikipedia description: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-hit_wonder
@mkygod
@mkygod 10 жыл бұрын
***** Whether a hit song is good or bad is purely subjective. A hit can be good or bad, just like a how good song can be a hit or fail on the charts. I'm sure there are many hit songs that millions of people love, but you and others personally hate. But this is all irrelevant because a "one hit wonder" is a description of the musical act that performs it and is not a comment on the song itself.
