Memories of listening to this from BBC Choral Evensong as I drove across the Cotswolds from Oxford to Cheltenham one autumn in the twilight.

By far, my favorite hymn of all time. If you're not a believer by the end of this piece, there is definitely something wrong with you.

This is deeply moving hymn, perfectly sung. It proves once more Ralph Vaughan Williams was the outstanding English composer of the twentieth century.

The end doesn't sound like the same piece of music, but it's beautiful!

At the end, I wish the trumpet were one tenth as well in tune as the choir. That final trumpet entrance is like breaking glass. And what a shame: to that point the performance has been so perfect that the listener has completely given over to the singers and organist, and is unprepared for the mother of all clams when it comes winging in at the end. Was this a live performance? Could they not have fixed this?
