Straws aren't a big environmental issue. Some little boy said the US uses half a billion straws a day, with no evidence, and now that "fact" (not a fact) is being used to draft legislation to ban a utensil that is an absolute vital part of thousands of lives. Sure, some can wash straws, but many can't. A straw can mean life or death for a seriously disabled person who lives without a professional caretaker. You know what's one of the BIGGEST problems is disposable fashion. You know, the cheap often toxic online store trash that everyone buys because they cost like $5 but never fit right or look like the online version, so they get tossed in the trash by hundreds of people on a daily basis? If not thousands? Another major problem is people having the impression that paper is disposable and better than plastic. Making a single sheet of paper takes so much power to manufacture, uses massive and deadly machinery, and uses such toxic and deadly chemicals that people get paid $100-200/hr because of the ridiculous risk of death. Chemicals like ozone and chlorine are used. People are just chucking away entire sheets of white paper while worrying about straws. Are straws an issue? Yeah. All our production methods are terrible. We insist on printer paper that's glowing white and flawless. Can't you understand what energy it takes and pollution it causes to turn a giant tree into that? The best option we have available to us is to CONSERVE. The pledge is "REUSE, REDUCE, RECYCLE" and it's in the correct order. Reuse things. Take paper you printed and don't need, cut it into four pieces, turn it over, and put it by the phone or in the kitchen. Use it as scrap note paper. Really consider if you NEED to print something. Print double sided. Then recycle it once you've used it. I wash and reuse straws. I also wash and reuse ziploc bags. I use grocery store bags I sometimes have to use as garbage liners in small wastebins or take them with me to the grocery store to use instead of getting more produce bags. I use empty plastic containers to store food in the fridge instead of just throwing it away. I use glass spaghetti and fruit mason jars as glasses. I don't do these things because I'm some zero-waste extremist. It just makes sense. Why throw a mason jar in the recycling and then go buy glasses? That's stupid. Mason jars are better quality glass than a lot of drinking glasses, and you can even use them to put leftover sauce or soup in if you keep the lids. And ziploc bags are good for at least half a dozen reuses if you don't leave them in the fridge or freezer too long for the food to spoil. I even reuse paper towels, if you didn't get it all gross, just rinse it out and use it for something else. That's common sense. Unplug stuff you're not using because it is still using electricity. Turn lights off when you don't need them. Take more efficient showers. Don't leave taps dripping. Common sense. All of the things I just said would be SO much more effective than making such a big deal about straws that people are going through life being wasteful and excessive, but think they're doing something monumental by banning straws, when some people literally can't drink without them. It's ridiculous to think someone could be left without any way to have a drink because straws are banned. That's not a crazy scenario, that will definitely happen, people need straws. I'm just really unhappy that everyone is patting each other on the back for banning straws while they ignore the massive amount of pollution their lives generate on a daily basis. I'm a polluter. I'm not a litterer (fuck you if you are by the way, people like me have to pick that shit up, when you accept an item like a cup from an establishment, you agree to dispose of it properly, you don't get to chuck it where thousands of animals and people have to live, imagine I just tossed anything I didn't want to carry anymore on your front lawn so YOU had to pick up my trash). I'm so far from perfect, I am 100% a part of our waste culture, I just try to be logical, economic and environmentally conscious. Also, I save a lot of money without intending to, so that's a bonus you could enjoy. All I'm saying is that focusing on straws is not helping. We need to turn this around, our ecosystem is on the verge of collapse, and we're going to take at least 97% of the species on this planet with us. I'm not directing this at OP, I'm just trying to give anyone who reads this some perspective and hopefully get someone to assess their wastefulness and try reducing their weight on the stressed-to-the-point-of-breaking ecosystem we all share. Yes, that sea turtle video was absolutely horrifying, but did you happen to notice all the other shit floating around it? That matters just as much.
