Music video by Lorde performing Green Light. (C) 2017 Universal Music NZ Ltd.
Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
I do my makeup in somebody else's car
We order different drinks at the same bars
I know about what you did and I wanna scream the truth
She thinks you love the beach, you're such a damn liar
[Refrain]
Well those great whites, they have big teeth
Hope they bite you
Thought you said that you would always be in love
But you're not in love no more
Did it frighten you
How we kissed when we danced on the light up floor?
On the light up floor
[Pre-Chorus]
But I hear sounds in my mind
Brand new sounds in my mind
But honey I'll be seein' you wherever I go
But honey I'll be seein' you down every road
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
[Chorus]
'Cause honey I'll come get my things, but I can't let go
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
Oh, I wish I could get my things and just let go
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it

[Verse 2]
Sometimes I wake up in a different bedroom
I whisper things, the city sings 'em back to you
[Refrain]
Well those rumors, they have big teeth
Hope they bite you
Thought you said that you would always be in love
But you're not in love no more
Did it frighten you
How we kissed when we danced on the light up floor?
On the light up floor
[Pre-Chorus]
But I hear sounds in my mind
Brand new sounds in my mind
But honey I'll be seein' you wherever I go
But honey I'll be seein' you down every road
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
[Chorus]
'Cause honey I'll come get my things, but I can't let go
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
Oh, honey I'll come get my things, but I can't let go
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
Yes, honey I'll come get my things, but I can't let go
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
Oh, I wish I could get my things and just let go
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it

[Outro]
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it"

Dude... I'm a huge fan of this song and the album as a whole, but like... The song's structure is absolutely normal. Nothing out of the ordinary. It's: verse, pre-chorus, chorus, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, outro. This structure isn't special. I'm not saying the song isn't special, I just think you're reading too much into it.

Some ppl just heard the upbeat tempo of the chorus and declared it to be 'too poppy.' Seemingly forgetting that Lorde is an artist who enjoys using and exploring many different styles of music, and that she will always do what she wants. As she should.

She wrote royals and everyone of that age group and everyone of that cultural fell in love with it. She writes green light and it fits so well with the same community of people. Lorde is a true growing artist that can grow with the people who listen to her. Not saying she can only cater to those people, but she surely does know how to cater to an idea, a moment, or an emotion that many people can relate to and reminisce about or feel in the moment.

For those of you who are complaining that Lorde sold out or fell into the pop machine, this is far from manufactured pop. This track has 4 different melodies that blend well into each other. A song this complex is nowhere close to manufactured pop. This is closer to indie pop than straight up pop. She's also 20, there's no way she's gonna write the same music as 16.

Jesus has changed my life, He answered my prayers, i had been praying for years so I can get baptized and He answered that prayer when the time was right. Both my parent use to drink alot and plus my dad use to smoke cigarettes and I use to suffer because of that my dad has also fall away from his faith at that time but Jesus sent one of His followers to my dads work and then he use to talk to my dad about His life back together with Jesus to build a relationship with Him and that same year around Christmas a bit after my dad got sick and the follower of Jesus prayed for my dad to get better and he did, but while he was sick he did not smoke or drink and even after that he never drink or smoke again Jesus has freed him from that trap which he was in since he was a teenager. My dad has built his relationship with Jesus and now is free of his past and lives for Jesus. After I got baptized I still was not close enough to Jesus but after a few months the Holy Spirit who is living inside me found a way to make me take my relationship with Jesus and I did. Later on I had my final exams and I barely studied, i told Jesus that He is my priority and it my grades doesnt matter however I had faith in that i would pass because of Jesus and when I got result o saw He did not let me down and I pass all my subjects only because of Him. A time I was praying for a job and the week after in church a opportunity came by. I also applied online for jobs and ask my uncle for help in finding one and one day i kneeled down and prayed and within a few minutes to an hour i got a call from my uncle saying he got me an interview and later that day i got a call from one i applied online. The next week i prayed on my knees again to get the job that i applied online for and aboutb5 in the evening i got a call saying i got that job. Jesus has even given me thing that i didnt praying for because He knows my heart. Everytime i had fallen away (i still do) He always brings me back to Him. He has never failed me and never will. Jesus said if we ask for anything in His Name we will get it.

Some people complain because this sounds different than before. Here's some food for thought for you: David Bowie, the music legend himself, called Lorde "The future of music." Bowie was notorious for being a chameleon. Every one of his projects, from Ziggy Stardust to The Labyrinth, feel completely unique. They are all different and capture a different side of Bowie, but he is still present in all of these. They are different, but still cohesive. How does this tie into Lorde? Even though this is different, it's just a page from Bowie's book. It may be different than Pure Heroine, but that doesn't mean she's selling out. This is just another aspect of her, while still bursting from her own mind. Let's not bash her change in direction. Instead, let's celebrate that she's not going to stay in a niche simply because fans want her to. She's still exploring, and I'm excited to see where the path leads.

I think we love Lorde cause musically she precisely conveys how every teen and young adult feels in current zeitgeist. Her music is about self-explore while growing up and trying to understand the world. It portrays her fearlessness, idealism and struggles as well as mine. That’s why I always think she is such a symbol of one generation that sees the world and life itself very differently than any generation before.

"But I hear sounds in my mind, brand new sounds in my mind" as the song shifts to a piano beat she's never used before. She's literally telling us that she's evolving into new territory as an artist with this record. Also take into account the fact that she's 20 years old now, and with that comes the excitement of taking on the world as a young adult. This makes me think about college nights, when you felt like you had the green light to do anything you wanted before sunrise. She was still a teenager when she wrote Pure Heroine, and I think it's naturally a darker record because you feel kind of trapped and broody during those years of your life. When you come of age, there's an intoxicating freedom to it initially, especially in her case as a successful singer with money and credentials. To me this song represents that excitement, a starry-eyed lust to celebrate the beginning of the rest of her life. I'm so curious to hear the rest of the album, and I'm excited for her that she wants to show us this new energy!

yall shes said in interviews (this morning on triple j in australia) that her album is a mix of her old and new style of music. she's very particular and LOVES to perfect the beat and rhythm of her songs -- base sound to her is very important. her album is going to have aLOT of her original style as well as the new (which imo, is still really good!) artists evolve! but she's said herself that she still very much has, and loves, the slow soft beats we got in pure heroine

i cant comprehend how people are saying that this sounds generic. To me, it has a clear classic Lorde vibe to it in the lyrics and in the beat of the chorus especially, and it doesnt sound like anything on the radio right now. That being said, you can tell shes been experimenting with other sounds, which i love, and i think that she made it work out amazingly. This is what quality pop sounds like.

Agreed. Just because something has a catchy, pumped-up beat doesn't make it generic! Of course Robyn is the comparison everyone is making, but I think it's a good one. Robyn is emotional, original, and doesn't get old despite seeming fairly boring upon initial inspection. Good job, Lorde!

IT's definitely more than just an escape, it's an invitation of a lifestyle! Listen to the lyrics, it describes not just and idea but a story and reflection! This means Lorde has probably got the lyrics from personal experience. Experiencing someone else's thoughts or ideas is pretty cool, eh?

The song represents, to me anyway, of getting out of a relationship with a person you thought you’d be with forever at the start and the other person has moved on ( she thinks you love the beach....) and the green light is the metaphor for being able to finally move on and let go of that person you loved so much and it’s the feeling of knowing you need to let go and just waiting till you can finally give up.

I am struggling to get listeners despite my hard work so, kindly and respectfully, I would appreciate every listen & review! Have a powerful day!

The refrain has less melody than her last album. But this energy is very refreshing. The pre-chorus is my favorite part of the song, and the verses are incredibly intricate rhyming schemes on top of a very complex melody. I'm in love with this song. I believe the Title is a reference to 'Gatsby' and his Green Light. The theory behind it is probably that the Green light that Lorde is waiting for will never come. That's why the video ends with a sensation of despair and confusion. Gatsby's green light was a metaphor for the future that is always out of reach, and the goal of happiness that is actually unattainable. Beautiful music, beautiful girl. She's growing up, and she's so sexy!! I am too excited for June.
@ggirl6
@ggirl6 7 жыл бұрын
She denied it referenced Great Gatsby, but the normal traffic light (hence the "I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it", she's waiting for the guy to call her to come over). It's about her break up with her former boyfriend and letting go, moving out of the house and becoming an adult. She said it's about that girl crying on the dancefloor about her ex.

here's a weird thing. I just did some research. Traffic lights were an American invention, specifically by the city of Cleveland. A Traffic light system was implemented in New York in 1918. The Great Gatsby is set in New York, an written in 1925. Fitzgerald literally watched green lights get invented. And then he made a green light the central theme of his novel. Do what you will with that information. :)
@lucasprmr
@lucasprmr 7 жыл бұрын
I love this interpretation! It fits the music's theme because the song, to me, albeit sounding so joyous, is actually quite sad as she's waiting for her guy to give her the green light and he never does. She keeps waiting, she gets her things, acknowledging the end, but she can't let go, and that messes her up.

Her music tends to feel really expansive and epic. The piano, take, is like opening up this big world she created and I think her dancing, which everyone mocks, actually is really in tune with this idea. There's sounds like this on each song, where it feels like it's building, metaphorically building herself up (the message of the whole album). The Louvre has that Flume-produced chorus section, Sober with that subtle pounding beat before the drop, Hard Feelings when it starts to distort, etc. She's so incredibly talented.

The voice in this song isn't the high-pitched revengeful one like "My life is so perfect without you, I have a much better boyfriend than you, my life is way more glamorous without you". The one in this piece is a voice that shouts "my life is a mess, and I love it as it is, because I finally love myself and I don't need anyone to dance on my own celebrating who I am". It's not about partying over the perfect life, It's about celebrating our mistakes and disappointments and the wonderful act of celebrating everything anyways, even if things aren't perfect.

uxile It's not the fact that she's changing, she has every right to do what she wants, it's just that the long wait we all went through, ended up being her releasing a very mainstream song. And if you've ever paid attention to her interviews, she's mentioned being very against going "mainstream", so it's strange to her contradicting herself. I was expecting her to be experimental like her last album (not the sound, but the direction she took it), not play it safe with the sounds everyone else is using today.

Hey Lorde fans! I have just released my selfmade debut album CRASTI LAND a few weeks ago. I am a big Lorde fan myself, her minimal electronic music (especially during her first years) really inspired me and a couple of songs on the album, so I thought I'd share the news with other fans. I am struggling to get listeners despite my hard work so, kindly and respectfully, I would appreciate every listen & review! Have a powerful day!

Lorde knows how to craft a pop song. she also knows how to craft songs that have more meaning and purpose than to give a beat to dance to, as is evident in Pure Heroine. it's unfair to judge her album-to-come on this one song. PH had the token party song (Royals), and by the looks of it, this next album will have one too with this song. i anticipate whatever else her next album has to offer
