This innings really does show why Sangakkara was such a tough opponent for the opposition teams. You can put him under pressure (He was on 0 off 12 balls), but he won't crack under it and will find a way to accumulate some runs. He will then target the bowling side's weak link (In this case Root) to compensate for the slow start. Then, once he has got some runs, he will look to accelerate the accumulation to run-a-ball (He gets to his fifty at nearly a run-a-ball and then by 70, he is at going run-a-ball). In this innings he got to his fifty faster than the typically more aggressive and quick scoring Dilshan, despite that slow start. He will then continue the acceleration and the next thing the opposition knows is that he has hit a century. The innings shows that he is equally good against pace and spin, has a knack for picking the gaps and has a certain degree of power. A top-quality batter who would take the game away from you.

Dilshan from the other end looked pretty stout too. This has got to be what experience teaches you. The two were happy to rotate the strike and pick up those singles on offer without trying to go helter-skelter. Great way to see out the middle overs without running the risk of looking shaky out there in the middle. Sanga eventually made up for the lost deliveries upfront. We miss them and given how infinitesimal the crop of players we can find, considering the size of our country, we might have to sit back and wait till we have another player who can lift us all.
