An ex-partner introduced me to this song. I haven't been close to her for nearly fourteen years now, but I said then and say now that there is something deeply unsettling about the soundscape in this song. It's haunting, beautiful and melancholy. She'll never see this, that ex-partner, but on the off chance that she does, I will never forget this song, and thank you for introducing me to it, and to much more.

Loreena's version is easily one of the greatest ever. So haunting and atmospheric ! The words are so intriguing and mysterious. I love this song.

Many have tried, but none, in my opinion, have ever recreated the beauty of Loreena's take on this poem and melody. Hopeful love, deep sadness, and the pain of longing somehow all get so perfectly represented in song through Loreena's graceful fragility. The near a cappella and atmospheric ethereal background noise drive home the loneliness of the character's existence without his love, and by the end you're not sure if he'll see her again in the afterlife, but you get the overwhelming sense that he wants nothing more. While this is not my favorite Loreena song, it's undoubtedly the most emotionally affective of all. Even in 1985, she was a master of her craft with an understanding of lyric and song that someone twice her age might possess. Incredible.

Of all of the versions I've heard, this is the only version that properly frames the context of the song. One of tragic loss and grief. Most people leave out the verse: ..."People were saying, No two e'er were wed. But one has a sorrow, That never was said:... This song is a lament - not a joyous song. This is the way Gaels grieve. Thanks for posting it as you did. Thanks also to Loreena McKennitt for properly framing the song in a manner that maintains its context.

Protocultura Padraic Colum of course. Although the basic folk song goes back, in many forms, for centuries.

Pretty sure his love died before they could be married. I think that's what those verses meant. Then he dreamed about her (but I like to pretend he saw her ghost one last time x) to say goodbye).

It is typically graceful of her, and also thoroughly appropriate, that Loreena gives credit to the poet who composed the lyrics. In the introduction to "Collected Poems of Padraic Colum" (1953) John L. Sweeney writes of Colum that "oddly enough, he will be remembered by many who (as Yeats noted) have never heard his name. At least one of his poems, "She Moved Through The Fair", with an air composed by the late Herbert Hughes, has so securely acquired the status of folksong that it has been collected as such."

Although this is a traditional Irish folk song, the lyrics can also be seen to have a parallel to future events which would impact Loreena deeply. One can almost interpret the song sung by Loreena as a foreshadowing lament with regard to the tragic loss of her fiance in a boating accident -- 13 years after this song was released on her Elemental album. Beautifully sung, as only Loreena can.

Interesting. I just came across this rendition today of a tune I know well and love very much, and as soon as she completed the first phrase I felt a shiver go up my spine...all the way to my face and then I just let more than a few tears go! That voice...the tone & phrasing...well...thanks Loreena! A great aesthetic release, and this August weather/pollen here in the Ozarks has got my sinuses outa commission. I can get air through now - thanks again, Loreena!

My love said to me My Mother won't mind And me Father won't slight you For your lack of kind Then she stepped away from me And this she did say It will not be long love 'Til our wedding day. She stepped away from me And she moved through the Fair And fondly I watched her Move here and move there And she went her way homeward With one star awake As the swans in the evening Move over the lake The people were saying No two e'er were wed But one has a sorrow That never was said And she smiled as she passed me With her goods and her gear And that was the last That I saw of my dear. I dreamed it last night That my true love came in So softly she entered Her feet made no din She came close beside me And this she did say It will not be long love Till our wedding day.

Stefan Meyer It's super hard to explain the feelings this song triggers. Even harder is to explain how each person relates to it. Is it good? Or is it bad? Would be possible this traditional song be etched on us beyond any logical explanation? One thing I am sure: One can't never deny what he/she feels, for this is the truth facet of our existence.

The first phrase she sang sent shivers up my spine and tears out my eyes - what a great voice & beautiful tone/pitch! That said, I want to say 25+ folks commenting below have pointed out (for many it was the ONLY short boring comment you made about Loreena's superb rendition!) the incorrect use of the word 'kind' vs 'kine' in the top of the first verse. Some contradict kine and say the spelling is 'kyne'. Yet most recordings I've heard say 'kind'. My utmost concern about this slight dialect variance for the lot of you is that I HOPE IT DIDN'T DIMINISH THE PERFORMANCE & RUIN THE DAY FOR YOU ALL! Whew! All that typing made me thirsty. Time for a soda. No!? Sodee. No!? Pop. No!? Sodie pop. Maybe. Coke. Yes, cold & sweet, please! ;-)

One mistake though. "For you lack of kind" is actually "kine," or kin. In other words, his family accepted her despite the fact that she didn't come from a good family or perhaps had no family at all.
@electrondady14754 жыл бұрын
i don't think so . the term "kind" is a biblical reference. its term used to describe cattle . his lack of kind means he is a poor man.

The song is old enough, and its origins sufficiently hazy, that the exact lyrics cannot be positively determined. It could indeed be "lack of kine" (cattle), or "lack of kin" (no supportive family), or "lack of kind"; all references to a dearth of worldly possessions with which to support a wife.
