I used to teach high school English. I always taught this poem by Tennyson, focusing on his use of euphonic devices, the features that give the poem a beautiful, melodic, pleasing, memorable sound. Things like assonance, rhyming, repetition, rhythm: matters of sound (ears and heart), rather than thinking (head and brain). My students loved it, especially when I ended the lesson(s) with Loreena singing her exquisite version. On two separate occasions, a 15 year old boy and a 16 year old boy came after class and whispered to me, "That is my favourite poem." (They didnt want anyone else to hear!) One boy asked to borrow my CD over lunch so he could take it home to copy. I was a happy teacher to turn my students on to a marvellous poet and an extraordinary Canadian musician. ❤️

I was lucky enough to sit 3 feet from her as she performed this song with just her harp. Myself an 6 other people were present at a record distributor right when the album came out. That performance impacted more than any other. I'll never forget it. I must have sold 2000 copies at my tiny record store.

If she ever comes back to Cleveland or Lakewood (a suburb in the Cleveland metro area where she performed some years ago) I will certainly try to make it to see her. I always found this to be an immensely sad poem - ever since I read it as a child. i came across this Loreena McKennitt's interpretation of the poem quite by chance and was utterly spellbound. This is quite simply divine. I like to believe Tennyson himself would have been astounded on hearing this. In it's beauty it's lost none of it's deep sadness and sense of tragedy.

You know, I was thinking about this and why it's so moving (I definitely cry too). Part of it is just the beauty of the poetry and the music, but I think it also taps into something sad we know is true: some things are too fragile and beautiful to live in our world. Children too weak or unhealthy to ever grow up, suicides, lovers who can only be destroyed by their love.

I will never forget hearing this for the first time. I was completely and totally incensed. How does anyone from this place of polluted earth dare to place their music and their voice to the brilliance of Tennyson's vision, how dare they! If I had known about "The Stolen Child," I might have burned the entire music system down without bothering to listen to any more of it. As it was, I heard all of "The Lady of Shalott," and after crying myself to sleep, I went looking for more. I heard "The Stolen Child" for the first time, staring dry-eyed out the window. When it was finished, I knew I had heard a heart singing from the other side of the Lea. W.B. Yeats' words, Loreena McKennit's voice, and her hands on the harp. One cannot get any closer to heaven without dying. I have been blessed to see the lady in concert several times. Each one has been what I can only describe as a religious experience. If you don't understand that, then you don't understand! Keep listening. It may come to you one moment when you least expect it. It will be worth the wait. It will be worth anything you have to give to pave your way there.

I think I fell in love with her the first time I saw her striding boldly through the wood, in a DVD I bought featuring her. And the Haunting and strong, yet so lovely voice, and then seeing her walk along a the very beach with a Light House, the last landmark my ancestors saw of their land, before crossing the North Sea to "Amerikaa". I wanted to go into that video and grasp her hand, and transport back in time because She and her Music are magic. I had the blessing of seeing her and her orchestra (wonderful musicians ALL) twice in San Francisco and once at the Alhambra in Spain. Not to be missed you younglings, if you EVER get the chance to see her DO so. And bow gladly as I once had the pleasure to do as a young man to the Lady Mckennitt. May the Good God protect her and her group in these uncertain times...

I remember watching this when it aired live 20+ years ago and being completely transfixed. At that time I had not heard of Ms.McKennitt but was lucky enough to have been watching the Juno’s and saw her magnificent performance. At the soonest opportunity, I went out and bought her cassette (I know! A cassette) and then proceeded to play it in my car until the tape literally started to fray.
