This show always seems to have a sense of irony with how Emily and Richard treat people versus their reaction to how other’s treat them. This same dynamic appeared in the Huntzbergers treatment of Rory and the way Richard acted towards Dean. Happens a lot, representing their hypocrisy.

No, by the end of the dinner Luke is well aware of all the back handed compliments and little jabs that were thrown his way that night. He's pretty good at reading between the lines. It just took him a minute and he may have just been trying to give her the benefit of the doubt. I'm sorry that your husband doesn't know a back handed compliment or jab when he hears one. That must be frustrating :(

Okay let me first say that I hate how Emily is treating Luke...But I’m kinda here for it. Hear me out. I’m devotedly TeamJess and thus I’m desperate for any morsel of evidence, that ASP plans to let them end up together. My interpretation is that Emily’s dislike of Luke mirrors Lorelai’s dislike of Jess. It’s one of the many, many small crumbs of evidences I cling on to
