Then the Faith arrested Cersei for adultery and incest. She asked for trial by combat and sent a letter to Jaime begging him to return to Kingslanding to be her champion. Jaime read the letter and threw it away. Cersei had chased him away from Kingslanding. I like how GRRM even made a pretty rotten person like Maegor into a three-dimensional character. He did a lot of awful things, but the stuff with the faith militant was necessary (to maintain Targaryen rule, at least, and whether that’s a good or bad thing can be argued). If he hadn’t tortured various people later on and murdered all the Red Keep builders (and some other stuff I can’t recall) then he’d probably fare better in modern Westerosi opinions.

Yeah that is not true Maegor was as crazy as Joffrey but more dangerous, both died the same, and he made so many enemies, that if Dorne invaded westeros in the middle of the civil war, no great house was gonna move a finger, and you can not kill Dornishmen with dragons, it would be the end of the dinasty before it began

The more I read about Aenys, the less I think he was a bad king and more a king crowned at the wrong time. His father was a conquerer who was feared and respected across the realm, but when he died, there was no set standard for the Targaryen rule. All anyone could do was compare Aenys to Aegon, even though they were very different people. Aenys was a scholar and alchemist who cared for his family. His mother died as a result of his father's war, which is probably why he strived to avoid it at all costs. He also wanted to respect the Faith because of their role in society, but he still wanted to uphold the traditions of the Targaryen dynasty. He was trapped from all sides, never able to please anyone with his actions. Maegor ruled by fear, which held off the faith but turned everyone else against him. Balance is key.

@TheUndyingCrystal Exactly. She was a warrior, not a diplomat. Rhaenys was the one with the good heart. Visenya always thought that being good with a sword made a person a good ruler, but even Aegon the Conquerer knew that wasn't true. He offered peace to his enemies before resorting to war. But Visenya always thought very highly of herself and gave Maegor the same attitude. She sewed the seed of discord in the family, which basically led to civil war.

At this point inheritance law for the iron throne was not truly established but assumed to be absolute primogeniture based on how the song of ice and fire survived and passed to Jaehaerys and Alysanne. If Viserys marries Aerea then no Dance at this point but maybe in the next one. Or maybe things get complicated when Rhaena officially takes the title of ruling queen and Aegon and Rhaena style themselves Aegon II and Rhaena I, then the same happens with Viserys and Aerea. Viserys dies and leaves a daughter, Aerea remarries and has a son later on but age gap is too great for a marriage between brother and sister and Dance happens, but in this case the younger half brother loses and absolute primogeniture is established as the rule of inheritance for Targaryens. At this point the Targaryens become wary of the influence of outsiders. And Jaehaerys and Alysanne spend more time in various parts of the kingdom carrying out Rhaena's rule and adventuring.

Maegor was a living dragon. Fierce, and unrelenting and loyal (to his brother n family). If his nephew Aemon hadn’t challenged him, he and Rhaena may have lived a good life. We’ll never know now but Maegor did put everyone in line, a bit brutally, but in line.

@@fike2951It's both. Maegor was definitely not a good guy, but the books are written from the POV of the faction that hates Targs the most. It's also supposed to be off second hand accounts, mostly by people who were never there. It's 'history' based on whispers, gossip, speculation, and old wives tales. The whole point is that you're not really supposed to know what is and isn't accurate. Hence you get 2 versions of the same story at points. This is supposed to make you question the validity of our own real world histories. Your statement that everything in the book is an intended fact by GRRM couldn't be less true. He has explained this himself countless times, even the book explains it. So yes, Maegor was cruel, but the book is also biased against him.

He didnt save the dynasty... he almost wiped it out. He killed Aegon, Viserys and wanted to kill Alysanne and Jaehaerys. He literally only left Jaehaerys as the only remaining male in the family in the blink of extinction. It was Jaehaerys who saved the dynasty by creating the doctrine of exceptionalism reconciling with the faith by peaceful means. If he had to do force, he also had dragons. Maegor only enfuriated the faith and could have backfired into the rest of the Targayrens once he had died.

I actually think he is my favorite. He is responsible more than he is cruel. None of his cruelty are gratuitous or driven by malice, rather they are a result of feeling pressured or threatened by enemies. It is easier to relate to him than to joffrey or melisandre because he is just being cruel because he is afraid of his enemies gaining the upper hand. Joffrey is cruel in a foolish gratuitous narcissistic way. Melisandre is imo the most abominable. Her tenderness is so dead because she is too easily enchanted by power, ie lord of light is deemed worthy of worship not because he is just but because he is powerful, the true god supposedly. If people hate joffrey for being inconsiderately selfish, i hate melisandre for being so inconsiderately unselfish. She will do anything evil for her god and there is no chance she will regret it; if shereen’s death brought stannis victory melisandre would not only not regret, but be proud of having destroyed stannis’ personality. Joffrey never destroys people’s personality, just their body. Melisandre destroys personality until Stannis is no longer stannis. Does not matter if stannis obeys or not - her goal remains to brainwash him. I can imagine myself being joffrey because he is simply lazy to do better, but melisandre is dilligent in going out of her way to be more evil than basic selfishness allows. Different story if she unwillingly brainwashes stannis because she is scared, threatened by her god to do it - but no, she herself enjoys obeying her god and destroying stannis more than she does shereen. Maegor is not cruel because he is narcissistic like joffrey, but because he loves Targaryen, not because Targaryen is the true god, but because they are the most civilised people in the world attempting to achieve the greatest happiness living on earth. They show the world it is possible to live happily and be comfortably powerful without feeling like you owe gods unhealthy devotion. Sure they are pwerful, but not powerful like red god where they do not need protection/maintenance, hence the necessary cruelty. So he is innocent of melisandre’s slavish devotion to power. If maegor has a daughter and melisandre tells him to kill her so that the targaryen dynasty would survive, he would spit at melisandre, rely on his cruelty to save targaryen dynasty anyway, and he would even try to destroy red faith people if he superstitiously suspects that their curse is possibly real. Even if he is resurrected by melisandre, he would kill her and dared the gods to punish him and targaryen for such apparent ungratefulness. Rather than choosing between two targaryens (dynasty and daughter), he would rather destroy any idea that there is a being powerful enough to make him choose - and he would express it by killing melisandre. There is just no choice more pleasant to a normal man. He is even better than jon snow. All this is not because maegor is badass and brave, because even a coward would fight back against red god if obeying red god means exactly losing what he is afraid to lose

Maegor killed his nephews, one via torture, and regularly raped his niece. He also forcibly married and raped the widows of several men he had killed. He had his second wife and every member of her family tortured to death for alleged adultery. The only evidence of the crime was the word of men his third wife had tortured. He utterly failed to stop the Faith’s rebellion.

I wouldn’t call him a savior by any stretch of the imagination. In many ways, he was Tywin with a dragon. He was a “ends justify the means and/or my pleasure” kinda guy. Yes, sometimes you have to beat your enemies with fire and blood. But if that’s the only approach you use, and you murder innocents along the way, eventually everyone will turn on you. If Maegor were truly a savior, he would’ve supported Aegons rights on the condition he serve as Hand after the Trial by Seven. He was the antithesis of Aenys, but that didn’t make him a superior king. Jaehaerys was essentially the best kind of ruler anyone could hope for by being a combination of the best traits of Aenys and Maegor and more.

That’s actually a good observation, when you think about it. Maegor was a better suited to rule than Aenys. Aenys youngest son Jaehaerys who ushered in the Targaryen golden age after his older brothers got killed off. Daemon was far more firm and decisive than his weak-willed older brother Viserys. Aemond was attentive and worked hard both at his studies and in combat training whereas Aegon II could care less. Viserys II though having a short reign was known for his shrewdness as a ruler compared to Aegon III who was melancholy with 0 personality. Aemon the Dragonknight also would have been a fine king if given the chance but instead the realm got stuck with Aegon the Unworthy. Egg and Aemon were both intelligent and with good temperaments well suited to rule compared to their older brothers, Daeron the Drunken and Aerion brightflame. In House Targaryens, it is quite rare that the eldest son is the one best suited to sit the throne, the only exceptions to this are Daeron the Young Dragon, Baelor Breakspear and Rhaegar, all promising eldest sons and yet two of them never even got their chance to rule while the third had his reign cut brutally short.
