After the sanctuary was plundered and brutalised by the German waste company Remondis, which had been contracted by the corrupt 'Risk, Litigation and Enforcement' team of the Brisbane City Council, the size of the Rainbow Lorikeet flock increased. This confirmed my suspicion that the birds were being trapped and trafficked.
I first found out about Lorikeet trafficking in the 1970s, when a TV program revealed the racket of packing the birds like sardines into a suitcase and posting them overseas. Of course, most of them died. However the money made from the survivors made the cruel trade lucrative.
Over the past 15 years I have been observing and documenting the number of birds, the number of species and the changing behaviour of the wild birds that come to the sanctuary. I noticed that the flock of Lorikeets, which nest in the hollows of large gum trees, would suddenly disappear or fall dramatically in number. This happened regularly. Previously the record had been about 100 parrots in the flock (10 years ago), but this year it increased over several weeks to more than 250 birds.
I thought I had stopped the cruel racket by raising the matter with the police and council (though both said that it was not their responsibility to anything about it.). However this large flock suddenly disappeared as well.
You can also see in this clip how the garden was recovering after the plunder and brutalisation of the plants by the German waste company Remondis, which had been contracted to 'remove the public health risk' by the Brisbane City Council. Of course, there was no public health risk posed by what they called 'overgrown vegetation'.
There was no justification for them to cut down and steal all my bamboo as well as the other beautiful and valuable plants that I had planted and nurtured for 15 years, including Wattles, Mango trees, a Quandong tree, more than 15 Royal Poinciana (Flamboyant) Saplings and young trees, a 14 year-old Bunya Pine and numerous Frangipani Trees in addition to 5 species of Monstera, numerous ferns and valuable geological specimens.
Outrageously, I was locked up at the corrupt Princess Alexandra Hospital while the 'enforcement order' was executed. This involved collusion between the hospital, council and police. Needless to say, it is a serious crime to lock a person up to plunder, vandalise and sabotage their property.
