I’m really not someone who would naturally leap to the defence of an incompetent minister, like Lorna Slater. But her embarrassing mistakes, when questioned by somebody, even she should know is active in deer management, point towards incompetent Civil servants. We don’t expect ministers to be naturally knowledgeable about all issues in their portfolios but we do expect them to be properly briefed about Q&As with full background information, so that they can speak confidently and authoritative, during Parliamentary business. Either she didn’t read her brief properly or her Civil servants were happy for her to be hung out to dry through inadequate or misleading information.
