I've done a lot of work on boats and yachts over the years, my advice to you is to carry out the rust repairs but to install a plastic collapsible type water tank within the existing and adapt the plumbing to john guest type ( speedfit ) this can all be sterilised from time to time. If the new tank isn't sufficient then you can get a second tank and fit it in another location with a transfer pump between the two. ( get a couple of wema senders to keep an eye on the water levels ) Obviously the tanks would need to be secured with a frame or bracketing . As for the pumps, those Jabsco ones are very good but some need to be primed and do not like being run dry! Although there are plenty of pumps including Jabsco and whale models that are self priming. Good luck with it all!

You’re young and think of it as an education, like boat school....I started out knowing very little about boats and now, 20 years later, I can pretty much diagnose the problem and, most of the time, fix it myself. Doing it yourself will always help you, always, you will know how it’s done and you will get proficient at whatever you tackle. I have a tee shirt that says “I work because I really like boating” and that’s so true. Just think of all the money you can save doing it yourself, that is, after you’ve purchased all the tools and materials you will need.....Boat life....you gotta love it! Nena California

Funnily enough, I was watching someone sorting out their water tank on a sailboat the other day; after getting it clean, they sealed the tank with food grade epoxy. All of this has basically told me not to trust the water tanks of not-new boats; when I get a boat I'll be giving the tank some attention!

The safest and cheapest overall option is to line the tank (i.e. your 'rubber bladder', but make sure that you have no sharp edges that could pierce it). Unless you spend money on confirming that the tank is still safe (and the rust hasn't pitted it too far) then you are taking a risk that the rust will continue and then the tank will leak. The rust itself won't do you any harm (it's only iron), but bugs can get in and live in the crevices which would be a bad thing. As others have said, maintaining the steel tank is an ongoing requirement and you absolutely must use the right treatments. Phosphoric acid is alright in small doses if it gets inside you (Coco Cola contains it), but what else is in that product you have used? Then you have to use a suitable paint - many will do you no good at all, and the right ones will cost you and may need specialist breathing apparatus. I'm afraid its a case of buy cheap, but twice. If it's at all possible, bite the bullet and go for the lining.

Rusty water in itself is harmless, actually is a benefit to older women because it has higher iron content in it for the blood. The rust is not poisonous. The water where I live is rusty right out of the well. And the rust converter is nothing more than phosphoric acid which converts the rust to iron phosphate which is inert. Why does everyone want to scare this poor woman to death?! Lorna, when you put it all back together I suggest you add a piece of tubing to the intake line with a filter on it so that you will filter out any debris and still get water from the bottom of the tank. in the future and also remember to open it up once a year for a look see. You are also going to have to drill out those broken bolts.

Hi. Don't bother cleaning it, insert a couple of plastic water tanks connected together and replace the pipe work, it may mean less water storage but is safer than drinking it through those corroded pipes, I have plastic tanks and they are great, I'm on River Lea Essex, give me a shout if you need help with it.

Have a look online ( ebay or simialr) for a FLEXIBLE plastic water tank (starting around £30 depending on size) and renew the pipe at least as far as the pump with plastic (from Wickes or B&Q) The connection fittings are really easy to fit, some are pushfit, others are tighten by hand. Then when filling up in the future add a little of the mixture used to steralise babies bottles. (milton is a well known brand.) Also Polytanks (not collapsible) are available in smallish sizes around 50 quid upwards, look online or a chandlers. (Make sure it will go through the hole in the deck.) If your pipes are rusting they are not really suitable for drinking from (without boiling the water first.) so should eventually be renewed through the whole boat as they will eventually will start to leak into the bilges.

I went through this exact thing when I got my boat. Took weeks to get the hatch off with much violence, opened the pipe with a screwdriver. Months later grinded it down and painted with Vactan. Messiest work of my life. Please don't use anything toxic like rust converter. I'm planning to have it painted with polyurethane, but that's complicated and expensive. Good luck!

As a temp stop gap till weather warms up . Clean as much rust scale, & slime out of your tank as you can. Then give your tanks inside bulkheads a cement grout wash spread all over the inside, allow to dry . The Grout is just normal cement mixed like porridge, use a brush. you will have water but no to drink, drink ale like the old seafarers did. blow all boats pipes through.

It looks like you could possibly have some electrolytic corrosion going on. In other words, you might be getting some stray electrical current in the water tank or hull, which is causing the corrosion. Have you noticed any other areas on the boat inside or out, which seem to suddenly be showing more rust than usual? For example, years ago I had a freezer malfunction and it started feeding current into the case of the freezer, which transferred the current into the steel frame of the boat. I started getting strange corrosion and pitting in various places in the bilge, as well as on the exterior of the boat at the water line. Also, my sacrificial anodes on the boat started melting like butter in the sun. Once I found and fixed the problem, the corrosion stopped.
@jacksons1010
@jacksons1010 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, this seems very likely. I assume you have DC power circuits on the boat, and I’d bet somebody has used the metal hull as a return path (“earth” or “ground” depending on your terminology). Perhaps that’s common practice as it reduces installation cost, but here’s where it comes back to cost you more in the long run.

Hi, London Boat Girl. When I used to live on my own boat in Brum, I was advised to clean out the fresh water tank every two -three years and repaint if necessary, which I did and didn`t have any problems. Would also advise you to fit a decent water filter, if you haven`t already got one, as some older boats were not always fitted with them, best place if you have room is under the Galley sink directly in line after the water pump and before the cold water tap which you use daily. If done properly you won`t have to worry about buying any expensive plastic, rubber of stainless steel tanks, some of the quoted prices are stupidly expensive for what they are. Happy Boating.

May I make another option. Drain your tank. Clean as much gunk out as you can. On the suction side of the pump, put a removable filter and a shut off valve. When the pump starts slowing down, you can just replace the filter. This may get you the time you need. Till spring comes

Best of luck with the tank. But ultimately, drinking out of ANY large tank is really inadvisable. Use it for washing, but have a smaller (10 litre) tank/bottle/dispenser in your galley for drinking. Drain and top that up regularly. Much easier to keep it clean. You can get fairly cheap ones in glass, plastic or porcelain, with a tap, from places like The Range or big supermarkets. 🙂

Dry Tank, wire brush and remove rust by hand as much as possible, then two coats of BlackJack tank sealer or modern equivalent. I had the same situation with my tank access hatch. It now has all new bolts and fortunately, the job was done in the summer. Not complicated but you end up as much inside the tank as humanly possible! NO rust converter, I do not believe that is compatible with potable water tanks.

Wow! What a horror story....and as you said...it could have, may have done, made you ill. You have made me think about my water tank now, to be fair, I don't drink straight from it, I don't have a filter as far as I am aware so will have tea or food from boiled water which always looks clear at the tap. There is a pump and an accumulator up front next to the tank itself. I do and will continue to buy bottled water to drink until I have checked my tank out... but when I fill it I always run water through the hose to ensure the hose is clear before it goes in the tank and I let the tank overflow, and that overflow always looks clear, but now I am in doubt. Thank you for the heads up, taking one for the team.... I will watch how you progress and please look after yourself. x

Hindsight is 20/20 - Inspection covers are intended to be removed for Inspections. 20 years without removing an inspection cover, I'm not surprised what you encountered. I was going to mention using Stainless Bolts for the cover, but an online engineering site mentions galvanic corrosion from the use of dissimilar metals. Perhaps an inspection interval is advised, and the bolts (as built, not stainless) can be assessed, or just replaced, at every inspection. High Iron content in the water, doing a cursory look, I can't find any really adverse problem that jumps out health wise, though too much Iron in vitamins can be dangerous, iron in vitamins must be more readily bioavailable, because much is said of excess iron via supplements but little said of the same from water. And, those of us not in narrow boats drink faucet water that comes through many miles of pipes. But therein lies the difference. Most city water systems are Chlorinated, and the one thing where there was a consensus on concerning water exposed to iron is a bacteria known to grow on the iron. In the U.S. "The EPA has not listed iron bacteria as a contaminant [yet the EPA] does list iron as a Secondary Drinking Water Contaminant because the pathogenic organisms, which require iron to grow, increase the risk for disease or infection when digested by humans." Again, worthy of reducing, but non-specific. Lastly, working in a large Steel Mill related facility, I spoke with a plant engineer and contractor that foreswore drinking water from the plant's water fountains, they both had seen the inside of the main pipelines bringing water into the plant and were so incredulous of the contamination that they won't drink it anymore. You seem to have the project well in hand. Watch for contamination of your water by chemicals used, coatings, etc., consider filtered water systems (the type you fill and the water slowly passes through the filters) if need be. Consider an inspection interval. And keep making the interesting shows. Great work.

Integral water tanks are a pain in the arse for sure. They do need repainting with a special paint every two years.

This tank is for potable water, your drinking and cooking water should come from another source. Good luck with all.

obrbob194 Right! Potable literally means “drinkable”.

@obrbob194 Potable water is water taken on from a dock or other vessel, it should be used for clean up and washing of body and dishers only unless filtered through hypa or charcoal filters for drinking and cooking. never trust water purity for consumption when taken from a dock or other vessel.

If I was in your shoes I would scrape and sand back the rust to as much clean metal as possible treat the rust and exposed metal, then get someone in to weld new steal to make a new tank, good luck with the job.

Why don't you get a stainless steel liner or copper tank fitted or a plastic liner fitted Use a wet and vaccum to remove the excess water and crap.. I would woukd not use the painted metal tank have a new tank liner put in with a mesh filter on your outlet pipe. Cannot believe you do not clean and sanitise your fresh water supply annually you also need inline water filter fitting to water from the tank

Eugh! I've often wondered about the state of the inside of water tanks on peoples narrow boats. I'm sure yours is not exceptional. Perhaps you could line the tank with some heavy duty polythene sheeting or a small pond liner.

What about all that rain in Pommyland?😊 Why don't narrowboats put in some rainwater harvesting system, water drains in off the roof into the tank. No limescale. On the bright side you must have a fantastic immune system after drinking that water.

Looks like a horrible job. Old gent I knew told me when he was in the navy he painted the inside of a ships water tank (huge but no ventilation). He was eventually pulled out on a rope high as a kite because of the fumes - ill for days afterwards.

Fuck that, just dry it out repaint it with anti rust paint and then get a plastic tank in there and might have to look at replacing some of that pipe work and also install a filter so anything still in the pipes isnt getting into drinking water.

Idea just come to me could you use a rubber pond liner to line out the tank? You may need to make a new outlet pipe? The pond liners cost between forty and fifty Quid .

Nasty. I hope you get it sorted out. How about a plastic bottle-tank on deck, (a bit like those chilled water dispensers you see in offices) as a temporary source, while you fix the tin tank.
