stephen chow knows how to write funny yet emotional stories. While also writing in strong female characters that dont try and shove it down your throat.
@KillberZomL4D424943 ай бұрын
True, this is how you write strong female characters, not the girl boss cringe Hollywood thingy.
@allengarcia59433 ай бұрын
True. And what's really good about this movie is that he didn't add dialogues to the fight scenes he knows people would love to watch kung fu fighting without the constant talking and all the shenanigans during a fight while adding some comedic vibes to slow down the pace of the moment
To give this fight scene some context. Kung Fu traditionally is based on 2 disciplines, Outer Technique (physical, fist/weaponry, through muscle training) and Inner Technique (Qi/Chi, energy, chakra..through breathing training). The highest level of Kung fu, is a master of both). Strong chi can super enhence physical techniques. The 3 masters (fist, ring, spear) are using mostly outer technique, good at Kung fu forms in their respective disciplines, but they are no match for these “musicians” that are masters of inner technique by interjecting Chi into the music instruments and turning sound/frequency directly into an attack. The invisible sword cutting or invisible fist that landed are just animated to show the kind of notes, sharp or heavy, was played. Outer technique can’t block that, except the landlady’s “Lion Roar” technique, which is a much higher level of Chi, so she effectively squashed the music instrument attacks. The landlord uses both techniques, he has strong chi to power his outer technique of WuTangs “TaiChi Fist”, that’s based on the principles of soft is stronger than hard, slow beats fast, so it’s all about transferring force to elsewhere (even back to striker)but himself when struck upon. That’s why he was shown as flimsy, can’t land a punch on him and later flung the strikers by turning their force into a circular motion and nullifying them.

You explained it perfectly. A lot of Westerners would watch this scene and never understand it. I'm an Asian American, but I have seen this movie and plenty of asian and classic chinese movies to understand this since I was a kid. In a way I like to think Stephen Chow made this scene as an homage to classic chinese kung fu.

Kung Fu can be separated into different categories not limiting to external and internal. North South, for example where the North emphasizes on long range and south is short range. Or from schools, families and sects .
@dunnbrandon2 ай бұрын
@@ginoe987you are talking about different disciplines/fighting form. 北方拳, 南方拳. I m speaking about the fundamentals of Kung Fu, the essences as any form or style or sect, all falls into internal 內功 (氣 Chi) or external 外功 (form/style 功法). The northern (long 長拳) or southern are external based Kung Fu form
@ginoe9872 ай бұрын
@@dunnbrandon lol every kung fu/martial arts style is born from a concept. Crane styles emphasize precision pressure point strikes/grips, dragon emphasizes twisting body motions for creative angles, bagua is footwork that takes opponents backs, etc. Like I said, kung fu isn't limited to external and internal.
@dunnbrandon2 ай бұрын
@@ginoe987lol, except it is not, what you are talking about, again, its all part of the external form. What I m talking about is what this film is deeply rooted in, ancient Chinese Kung Fu and WuXia universe commonly understand are as clear as night and day. It’s like saying baseball has both pitching and batting, and you say but there’s first base, second base, DH, stolen bases…etc, doesn’t matter, all part of offense/batting. Kung fu, like this baseball analogy, it’s made up of these two parts and everything else builds off them. Main character’s Kung Fu is Buddha Palm, deemed and imagined by Hong Kong culture as the epitome of strongest ancient Kung Fu, it’s still an external form but must require years and years of breathing exercises and training, to truly enact it. Also internal forms are usually a separate set of manuscripts/scrolls obtain separately, or sometime protagonist gets greatest of luck to consume some magical plants/fruit to instantly gain years of chi, as Chinese/hong Kung novel culturally depicts. All in all, you can talk about ur mantis form, tiger claw, any animal forms, or movement sequence created by sect leaders, and even Buddha palm..etc are all external form. Without internal chi, it will just be like the main character when little, attacking without much damage. But when he got healed by landlord and landlord lady, both of their lifetime chi all gets transferred into him to form the incredible base of chi within him, all of sudden, however little the attacks, all his Kung fu movements (external) becomes extraordinary powerful. Especially the Buddha Palm, exaggerated as so, but that’s the point of a chosen one, as someone that mastered both internal and external arts. That’s the context I was trying to give to the film about what we’ve read and are familiar with growing up when it comes to this genre, when westerns might be confused about “sounds” attacking

What's really serious about this scene is there are no dialogues at all during the fight scene which makes it 10x better just pure epic fight scene despite the constant interruption by the landlady to add some comedic vibes to this very serious moment this right here is a cinematic gold imo

This is the best movie for those who have read Chinese martial arts novels. It contains many homages to famous Chinese novels. For example, the screaming woman and her husband are the protagonists of the famous The Return of the Condor Heroes (神鵰俠侶).

Landlady's husband reveal of being a Kung Fu master in here was the biggest twist in the movie. Everyone, for a moment, thought that it was the lady who is another Kung fu master because of her showing Scream power on certain occasions. But no, it was her meek, Stubborn pervert husband who was always getting a beating from her wife to be the greatest master ❤❤

Why they all think it's Yingyang the symbol means Yingyang but if in Kung Fu it also means Tai Chi
@MagicalKid8 ай бұрын
They're basically the same thing. Taichi gives birth to YinYang, and then they split into the four diagrams (four mythical beasts), and then those four give birth to the BaGua which are the eight trigrams used in I Ching.
