I just visited my grandmother's father's grave there a few weeks ago. She never got to know him... I can't begin to tell you the feeling I got walking up past that massive monument and seeing all the American graves. As a retired Air Force veteran myself and veteran of Afghanistan I pale in comparison to these men and what they did not only for their country but the entire world. Seeing this cemetery in person had an unexpected emotional response on me as I was choked up walking up to my great grandfather's grave with his great grandchildren there to see him and his friends. I video called my grandma and surprised her of where I was and she began to break down. I can't begin to express the feeling of mixed emotions we had.

I visited in May 2023. When you walk from the visitors' center to the memorial, then to the front where you see thousands upon thousands of graves of Americans who died in battle, it is just stunning. The cemetery is maintained in immaculate condition -- the grass is like carpet and not one thing is out of place. My dad was in the US Third Army. He enlisted in December 1940 and was discharged October 9, 1945. He spoke often of fighting east from Normandy to Nancy , then north and spending Christmas day, 1944, in Metz. He said that many of his fellow soldiers and friends were buried at Lorraine, which is why I chose to visit and pay respects in his stead. For those who have a chance to visit France, please try to go to at least one of fourteen American cemeteries in France and Luxembourg to pay respects.

I went there in 1983 while stationed in Germany. I'll never forget walking down a path of long hedgerows, and at the end, turning to my left, and for the first time in my life, something took my breath away. I couldn't move for at least a minute or two...being overwhelmed at the sight. When I reflect on it, it still takes my breathe away. Ever since then, I visit the VA cemeteries - especially of those I've known...they are missed. So grateful for those who maintain the ground of our cemeteries around the world.

Until 2016, I was the only direct blood relative to have visited my uncles grave there. It truly is a beautiful cemetery. I hope I will be able to visit again just one more time. My nephew visited in 2016. I had my name listed in the books that I visited back in 1989. Rest in peace uncle Bernard Bonderski

Our visit to this amazing place allowed us to view the grave site of my great uncle, Marvin E. Smith who entered the service/the Army, from rural east Texas. He died on November 9, 1944. If anyone has any information about the battle in which he died. Please share.

why was the cemetery named Lorraine does anyone know? I am interested also in the history behind the name Lorraine in general in France.

Lorraine American Cemetery takes its name from the unofficially named “Lorraine Campaign” which was the fighting in Northern France which included the battles for the crossing of the Moselle and Sauer Rivers and the battles for Metz and Nancy, and the drive to the German border.
