I was a bus (driver) operator for 10 years here in Australia and I didn't need classroom tuition on good manners when it came to dealing with the general public. It comes natural and so many passengers forget their manners when boarding the bus. I did a 3 week course to obtain my heavy vehicle licence and bus authority (authorisation to drive public transport in New South Wales) the rest of the training was done with the bus companies that I was employed with. It wasn't until the twilight of my bus driving career that classroom tuition became the normality to secure a role as a bus driver. The job in itself was rewarding, the traffic sucked and I had my share of good and bad passengers. I had the opportunity of working as a mentor, I loved the hands on learning when it came to being a mentor whilst out on the road with a new trainee.

wishing we had more drivers like Vanessa here in Milwaukee, especially when it comes to dealing with people with disabilities. not saying we don't have drivers who don't go out of their way to help ppl with physical or intellectual limitations because we do, but I feel they're not consistent in how they treat these members of the public. again congratulations Vanessa 😀

Well, it's been over two years now since this video. How's Vanessa doing so far? I ride LACMTA bus and rail system everyday to commute to work and seen the people that can push drivers to the limit, most are coming from Homeless thugs that never pay the fare and always make trouble with the drivers and passengers. Some of these homeless thugs are on the wheelchair or fake to be disabled so they can ride for free and bring their so called service animals in the bus without leash.
@Velotooslow10 ай бұрын
As an operator we really can’t say much, even if we know that they’re not service animals, if the person/ passenger says they are legally we can’t deny them anymore but if they never mention it then that’s a different story, I had a lady try to hide a dog in bag once…

I don't know how these buses can be on time with so many things to do besides driving. Amazing how many transit company put so many tasks to do on the driver. Been driver for 12 years here (Quebec, Canada). Only thing we do is drive the bus. No inspections (it's done internally), no getting wheel chairs secured, it's done by themselves. they just back up in a specific spot and only have to apply the break to be secured. In fact we are not even allowed to leave our seat when the engine is running. No backing up, no going outside to get your bus (they are all inside).

People should also consider King Country Metro in Seattle....there are different bus bases in the areas...not all are in downtown Seattle. But the pay is great and they have a very strong union. They were voted best transit system in the US this yr. Everyone starts off as a part-timer and the pay starts at $24/hour...the max is $35 I believe. That is pretty good money for a bus driver!

You can tell company people made this film. First, hats off to the workers who make everything run in public transit. But transit workers are not professionals as this film states. We are workers. If we were professionals they'd have PAY us like professionals. Here in Western New York we went 9 years without a contract/raise (its unlawful for us to strike) and when we finally did get a contract in 2017 (it was a very modest pay increase) we never got any retroactive pay for those 9 years. A decade lost. We also worked the pandemic without any hazards pay while upper management worked from home. Management in the Transit Authority I work for, pay themselves pretty well with a State pension I may add. Jobs in public transit throughout the whole sector, remain under paid commensurate with the responsibilities, working conditions and danger transit workers face daily. And in a nutshell, that's why there is a driver and mechanic shortage today.

As an experienced bus operator, maintaining schedule is important. But not as important as SAFETY and customer service. No operator should violate safety protocols and ADA laws as this can lead to lawsuits, and nobody wants that.
@Kaynos2 жыл бұрын
@@wturner777 Your missing my point. My point is a bus driver job is to drive the bus. When a transit company ask it's bus driver to do 56 other tasks under the "customer service" umbrella then it's impossible to keep a schedule.
@wturner7772 жыл бұрын
@@Kaynos Nowadays as a bus OPERATOR, we're becoming more than just "drivers". When passengers want to know which bus can take them to such and such, they expect the operator to know the answer. Some want to know how much the fare is and whether or not the farebox accepts debit or credit cards. Some people would ask questions like, "Is this the Route 77 to Sunset Strip?", or "When's the next bus?" You don't want to be a smart-ass to them as they can get offended. I've learned that with my 10+ years experience. I've been there before. Bus operators also provide courteous customer service with a smile, no matter how tedious it is.
