Losch Location model Given by German Economist,August Losch in 1940 ( translated in English in 1954) Book - The Economics Of Location The model is based on the urban places of entire Germany in which he took into consideration 150 commodities and services, including the manufacturing and industries. OBJECTIVES 1. To explain the size and shape of market areas with in which industry would command the largest revenue. Profit maximization Theory/ Market Centric Concept Modified model of Christaller and Weber. ASSUMPTIONS 1. Entire world is flat having uniform surface. 2. Demand decreases with increase in price. 3. Price increases as a result of increasing distance from the point of production causing higher transportation cost to transport the commodity to far away places. Range of the commodity - The maximum distance which a consumer would travel to buy a commodity. Example, a rational consumer would travel only two to three kms to buy sugar but he could travel more than 15-20 kms to buy a car. 4. Each function has a separate range, threshold and hexagonal hinterland. ( Threshold refers to minimum Volume of sales required to sustain an economic activity) 5. Shape of market place should be hexagonal so that neither any place is left unserved nor overlapped . CONCEPT OF K Total number of lower order settlements served by 1 higher order settlement. According to Losch, K value can be 3,4, 7,9,13,16,19.....nth ( Non fixed K Theory as each and every commodity and service has different range and threshold) CPT having K =7, 13, 19 value does not have any relation with other Central places. It is only concerned only with a single hexagon. The CPTs with these K values are considered the best locations. DEVELOPMENT OF SETTLEMENTS Losch considers rotating hexagons by rotating the demand curves to find new markets . The size of hexagons increases to find new markets as the production increases more than the demand. This makes the Theory more applicable and practical in real life. This leads to the formation of City Rich and City Poor concept. Changes in range of market The range of the commodity/ service decreases with increase in production price. Influence area reduces. The remaining area is captured by another CPT. COMPARISON OF CHRISTALLER AND LOSCH'S THEORY 1. Christaller' model is based on the study of only Barbaria, Southern Germany whereas LOSCH'S THEORY is based on the data of the entire Germany. 2. Christaller considers three essential conditions ( services, transportation and administration) for market place whereas apart from these factors Losch also considers manufacturing areas along with 150 other commodities. 3. Christaller talks about fixed shape and size of the hexagons whereas Losch increases as well rotates his hexagons to find news Market places. 4. Christaller's model is easy to understand but is restrictive, on the other hand Losch's model is difficult to understand but is more practical and applicable in the real world. 5.Christaller talks about fixed K values ( 3,4,7) whereas Losch considers non fixed K values upto 'nth' value. 6. Christaller considers that the market places at the higher hierarchy compulsorarily has the services and commodities available at the lower order market place but Losch belives in opposite scenario.... It's not necessary that commodities/services at the lower order market places are also available at the higher order market places.
