Making the same mistake twice... www.sailingnandji.com/
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we arrive to the island of Simeulue in Indonesia. The island is governed by Sharia law and as we know this is the law of the qaran, we do not know what it means for tourists. To be on the safe side Bonita is well covered on arrival not to offend anyone.
This anchorage sucks. Even though the bay is long, skinny, shallow and with a sand bottom, it is open to the South West and the Indian Ocean. Meaning any swell goes directly into the bay. To combat the roll, we set a stern anchor...
Yosh goes surfing up the point one afternoon and whilst in the waves, noticed Flubber drifting on pass. Whats all this about? The anchor had come off the rode...
Losing one anchor, sure it happens. Losing 2 anchors in 2 days... Come On! Losing our anchor twice is un heard of!
With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra where we are living the island life and chasing the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we are returning to Thailand in the coming months and then taking the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south to Chagos and across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! The adventure is just beginning!
We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World!

Before that, I watch because I am headin towwrd retirement and has plans in the Carribean and want to learn (now sailing a 24' sloop and raking up the miles. 1) Love your furry friend. Had a greyhound that became a part of the family. How does his spindley legs deal with boat life? (Apparently well!). 2) I love the chips gag (literally "gag") you pulled on her. Again, live it.. I did the same on my wife. Be warnee, and for the record, friend, we are no longer together!. Pranker beware!

Use a swell bridle instead of a stern anchor. It's easier to set up than a stern anchor and you can easily adjust where your bow is pointing from the boat. I could try explaining how to do it here in this comment but would probably just confuse you but there are many great videos here on youtube showing how it's easily done.

is it true that getting heavier anchor lets say twice from 20kg to 40kg will save boat from dragging on shore ?
@FrothLyfeSailingNandji
@FrothLyfeSailingNandji 4 жыл бұрын
Yes it would help but then you are logging around a massive anchor... Anchors are no longer dependant on weight alone to hold the vessel. It is about design to dig and hold into the bottom. As our primary anchor we had a 25kg plough design and always dragged no matter the bottom type in winds over 20knots, we now have a 20kg Manson supreme and have never dragged. If you use correct scope the anchor will do what it is designed for.
