Visited many of these forner airfield sites by air and on the ground as part of an ongoing historical project nine years on. Very moving at times even though I've been flying and gliding 56 years with a keen sense of history.

Brilliant! Thank you. I live in Staplehurst and I had ( now sadly sold) a WW2 (an Auster AOP6) aircraft based in Headcorn (Lashenden). There is so little left to see from the air it was great to see the different perspectives.

Excellent work ^_^ My workplace here in York is an industrial estate that was RAF Clifton during the war (and the York Municipal Aerodrome before that) - I wonder if it will show up in one of your future videos? ^.~

I’m American, but I never cease to be impressed by the enormous number of airfields built for the RAF during WWII. Thank you for creating this video. I’m surprised that all the airfields in this video have 2 runways, rather than the usual 3 for this era.

None of them were proper tarmac/concrete runways, they were Advanced Landing Grounds laid temporarily, which were then re-used, as far as practicable, on the continent as Allied forces advanced. They were designed with two runways for speed of construction, or one running east-west if that was sufficient.

@@jonh1808 I see. It’s amazing, nonetheless, that so many temporary airfields from the 1940s are still visible on Google Maps today. Quite a few of them were built with concrete block, which were repurposed into roads and building foundations and continue to be in use.
