Part 2 of a series about some of the Lost Arts of the 1970s. Hobbytex was the Australian version of the ballpoint fabric paint fad that swept the domestic landscape in the 1970s. (In the US & Canada, they had Artex). This is my tribute to Hobbytex.

I worked at Artex Hobby Products at the Executive/Manufacturing Branch at 711 W.Vine St. in Lima, Ohio. The paint shop was on Hawthorn Rd. south of Lima. The paint shop had techs to oversee that the paint was exactly the same from start to finish for consistency and was guarded. So you buy a tube at any time and that color would match identically all the time. I worked with all Branches and oversaw that they were well supplied for distribution. They were advertised on Bob Baker's The Price Is Right several times. Artex was bought out by Riviana Foods and then bought out by Colgate/Palmolive.

I just scored a tonne of hobby Tex for free. Had no idea what it was. Was thinking I'd find a tutorial... but this was so much better

This is brilliant, and I have many fond memories of attending Hobbytex parties with my girlfriends in the 70s and 80s as a kid in country Victoria.

Does anyone do these awesome crafts like Artex painting,Macreme,Tating, Embroidery,Pool- A- Dooling" anymore? My entire family worked on Artex paintings, posters, bookmarks(all were made of fabric and some were even done on velvet). We remember having quality time and great fun with the family too. It needs to make a comeback. A friend from Maine USA

I remember both Hobbytex and Artex. I did a lot of painting back in the 70's. My husband also did Hobbytex painting as well.

My Mother/Mum used to do this type of Fabric Art (it was called Tri Chem), either in the 1970's and 1980's (U.S.)....

I have my mums old tri chem paints but I’m not sure if they’re still usable. Is there a recommendation for getting the paint flowing again? The tips seem to be clogged but they look clean.
