Great and honest review as always Rob. I especially like how you go through the different types of fins that you tried and what was successful and why a lot of people that review surfboards don't really go into the fence at UPS as much it seems more all about the board and not necessarily the setup and I agree with some of the other comments about providing some surfing videos I'm not the greatest surf or either just an old guy in his mid-forties learning to surf.

Thanks. Yeah I think a lot of people have moved to be doing things that benefit them or keep their sponsors happy to be honest. That's probably how the game is when it's your bread and butter unfortunately. I haven't even monetized my channel and never had anything cheap free or discounted so it's literally just my opinion. I don't claim to be right or wrong. Just honest about how I found it 👍😉

Hi Joe. Thanks for the comments :-) Never too old mate 34 is still young as anyways :-p Nearly 10 years less than me ;-). Glad you like the content. Did you have a look back at the board selection guide you might enjoy that and there are some guides on the different fin set ups in the archive too :-) kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4bNip2No9uHgbc .. What are you learning on? Inspite of all the exciting boards you could be riding I would really recommend sticking to the same board for the first year unless you find your progressing insanely quickly.. I wouldn't recommend going to anything but a mini mal or big Hybrid for the first 6-12months you will really progress a lot more quickly on that type of board. Shorter boards are just going to be very frustrating till you master the basics. Once you are catching the clean part of the wave like 75% of the time and are able to reliably track across the wave face pump and do a turn and a cutback then your probably ready to move on . There are some great technique vidoes on youtube too ... Happy to have you in community Joe. Enjoy the ride :-)

Cheers mate, well I’ve been out in Costa Rica for a couple of months surfing every day on a 7’2 che mini mal (but with a point and a thruster set up like a huge shortboard) which I’ve sold to come home. So been looking for boards when I’m home (how I came across your channel) probably end up with a second hand min mal/groveller (think I’m using the term right) but been looking at modern lovechild or lost bean bag or similar in an ideal world. I’m slowly making my way though the past content for sure, keep up the good work and thanks. I’m happy to stay on a ‘learner’ size board no rush for a short board here tho there are some mighty nice twins out there

Yeah nice work mate the lovechild is one of was actually going to recommend to you that would be a great board to start you off sort of thing if you got a decent size you could still keep in your collection for when it's small as you progress .. sounds like you will advance really quickly anyways if your getting a good spell of quality waves in Costa Rika that's going to turbo your progression. 👍🤙

I stand corrected. The Bean Bag surfs good with quad controllers. It just needs cleaner conditions. And flatter faced crumbly waves. No bigger thand stomach high. Once it gets steep and punchy, I think another board is required.

@lawson45uk5 жыл бұрын
Youdig surf yeah it took a bit of arriving at that fin set up and not all of them feel particularly good to be fair. Usually the split keel is enough for me but the AM seems to just balance out the drive looseness and flow really nicely. I don't generally find 2+1s big enough then for whatever reason 2+2 is usualy too much. It wasn't too bad with the small carver rears either if it were someone a bit bigger still. I usually find the split keel hard to beat so was kinda gutted to have to mess about more this thing actually turned great with split keels I just found the drive not always there with the split keel but that is just been fussy to be fair. Ha ha nice. People love foamies here. Nearly bought an OE one must but they're always nearly the price of a second hand poly board. One of the guys even as a 9 foot foamy 😛 far out think I need some sponsorship and a camera man if im gonna make new content often enough 🤣

5'11 beanbag @ 45ltrs or 6'3 rnf retro @ 45ltrs What one would u suggest for maximum projection in knee high junk
@lawson45uk Жыл бұрын
Hi hard to say just on pure projection but the bean bag is definitely a more grovelly board and better at those tiny junky waves. It will flow in the pocket and dance around nicely. The RNF had more rocker and less width front and back so prefers a little more wave. Bean bag is the best grovel board I have had and the original sweet potato was also great. Cheers.

Loving the updated reviews! I am wondering if you might be able to give me some advice. So, I am looking at a bottom end board for surfing when it is basically flat -- ankle to shin high. For a while I have been dragging my paddle board to the beach when its nearly flat to catch unbroken waves and glide down the line onto the sand. It's fun but I have basically no control because of the size of the board. Do you think an oversized Bean Bag would work in those conditions and still allow me to have some control (bottom turn or a little cut back) or should I just go the more traditional route and get a longboard? I weigh 175 lbs (80 kg) and these are the two boards I am looking at: 1. The largest Bean Bag available in the Lib-Tech technology at 5'10 and 41.5 liters. OR 2. The Lib-Tech Pick-Up Stick which is a "short" longboard at 7'6 and 52 liters. I am personally leaning toward the Bean Bag because I think it will surf a little more like my shortboard but realize it might not catch waves quite a well as the longboard. Here's the links to the two boards. Thanks! www.lib-tech.com/lost-freak-flag-bean-bag www.lib-tech.com/pickup-stick-7-6

Sea Monkey Hey mate. To be honest for us guys around the 80KG mark (and pretty much everyone else that’s not a grommet) I don’t think anything can really replace a longboard in that stuff.. Have a look at the wingnut Noserider see if that interests you.. That’s what I use for that stuff and upto head plus too when I feel like it. Mine will still catch the tiny stuff for me and stull make it fun too at 9’0”.. It’s super flat in the rocker and plenty of volume and glides really nicely. If you really want to go for a bean bag go for a standard one poly or epoxy as it’s wider and higher in volume than the Lib Tech. I know the Lib Tech is awesome and indestructible but in that model it’s actually a slightly different board. Mine is a 6’0” 23” 45 Litres and really catches a lot of waves rides really good like knee to head high. Pick up sticks are also nice but yeah again just getting up and getting going on that tiny stuff is super challenging on anything that’s not a longboard…. Tried most stuff and given up the bean bag is probably the only short board that’s worthy of even considering but I would still go longboard.. That’s just my opinion though. Cheers.

There is not too many ride reports on the freak flag...so trying to get all the feedback i can get....the pulled in tail of the freak flag looks a bit better for my situation, as its usually straight hander closeouts, so its not a fat wave

Hey bud Hope you are well ? I’m thinking about getting a 6 foot bean bag as a pure groveller. I currently use a Firewire greedy beaver (6 6) 46.4l In your opinion (as I know you have owned both) does the bean bag paddle as well as a GB?
@lawson45uk3 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, not too bad thanks had a bit of an injury so not been surfing or shaping for a bit unfortunately but coming right. How about you, hopefully been getting waves. Bean bag best grovel board ever in my opinion... Especially for average surfers slow waves. My beaver beaver was 6'4" and the bean bag easily paddles batter than that so would likely be similar to the 6'6" anything you may lose from length you get back in the big tail when the waves get under the tail. Big difference will be how it rides. It makes speed a lot more easily than the beaver too. Might not be quite as performance in the back end but would expect it to generate and carry speed a lot better. You can do nice little cut backs and wraps in not much of a wave and it doesn't need to be clean either. I ride mine anything under head high all the way down to when it's junky waist high and I just dont want to take a longboard. Hope that helps . Cheers.

i've asked a well know shop , as you know im looking for a super groveler to replace the puddle jumper in mega small condition, when i told them i wanted a board to manoeuver in less than 1'6 feet they told me that the bean bag was a mini long board basicly and it wasnt the right board to manoeuver in small wave,totaly the contrary of a bunch of review i read . Or it might be why lost tell in the info for this board to reduce the size of the board , on some other site they tell you to ride it as small as you can ( i've seen that a lot with the evo too.) What do you think about that ? do you felt it less manoeuvrable than a puddle jumper or still you can do some stuff better than a mini mal , like snap etc. maybe lost the plank might be even better ?
@lawson45uk5 жыл бұрын
Youdig surf mate I absolutely love mine. Unless your super light and a really good surfer and can generate your own speed incredibly well I don't see that there would be anything better than these or potatoes for tiny waves. The puddle jumper just won't glide or catch waves like a bean bag and if you go too small on a bean bag it's not gonna catch and ride the tiny waves as well. Sure it's not a high performance grovellor but not many people have the ability to do high performance surfing in tiny waves anyways. I find that bean bag really good to turn myself and it will have speed and flow where other supposedly grovel boards might struggle to get going at all. The guys in the shop are either really good surfers and or surfing waves with really good shape and push even when it's small or just don't like fat shapes or haven't ridden one I would say. It's definitely more manoeuvrable the a mini Mal or a longboard. When the waves are really poor the bean bag is the only short board I have that I believe allows me to actually do decent turns at all. Just slow everything down a little. I'm not a high performance guy at all and in very small very flat faced waves it's the business as far as I'm concerned 👍
@lawson45uk5 жыл бұрын
Youdig surf funny that people say it's a mini longboard like that's a bad thing for tiny waves a mini longboard is exactly what regular guys need and with it running all that Vee etc it's not relying on concaves for lift and manoeuvrability. This is why puddle jumper are more performance than they look but also why there are better options for super low down and dirty sloppy small waves. The super deep double of a baked potato works well too but won't have quite as much glide. A sweet potato is also a good choice if you want to take a bit of nose out of the equation. To me going tiny small on even a bean bag would take it away from being a mega grovel machine too. For tiny waves its crazy flat rocker and maximum surface area all the way.
