Even with just still photos, this is amazing! It’s heartbreaking that ‘Cleopatra’ (1917) Along with most of Theda Bara’s films are lost.....

Unfortunately, all the original camera negatives and prints were destroyed in a 1937 fire at the old William Fox Studios, acquired a year or so earlier by upstart Twentieth Century Pictures. What remains of the Fox library were prints either Fox himself kept at home, those stored at various theaters which hadn't sent them back, or with foreign film repositories. Back then, movies didn't have much value to the studios after their initial showings; especially silent films, mostly forgotten when sound came along. That's why some 90% of films made prior to 1950 dissolved into dust or burned in fires. Celluloid was quite flammable.

The amazing thing that comedians had their pictures preserved like Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Fattie Arbuckle and Harold Lloyd or British guys like Hitchcock or a guy like John Barrymore...Well it depended on the studio itself. This movie would have had a massive historical significance.

Magnificent effort. What an utter tragedy that people in the film industry did not realise the artistic (if you will forgive the word, I don't mean it in a pompous way) and cultural value of the work they did. The problem was not only in Los Angeles. Most of the early films made here in Australia have been lost, most lamentably the early Ned Kelly.

It's sad isn't it? Here in America many of the original recordings of artists like Elvis have been trashed or attempted to be. When Elektra was cleaning out their storage they threw away a lot of master tapes, especially tapes of The Doors.

I have a framed photo of Theda Bara as Cleopatra hanging on my wall. Yes, I am a fan of a long dead silent movie star.

She gave an interview in the late 1930s which was recorded; she looked back on her image with warmth and humor. She died at age 69 in 1955.

@@steelers6titles Yes! I have heard it. A nice lady, probably pretty approachable. I am proud to say she was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and her childhood home still stands at the campus of Xavier University.

D. W. Griffith had introduced the long-form epic in American film with 1915's "The Birth of a Nation", and his masterpiece, "Intolerance", the following year.

FYI that fascinating music you're hearing was composed by none other than the great Victor Herbert from his original score for "The Fall of a Nation (1916), generally recognized as one of (if not THE) first through composed scores for an American silent film.
