I get it; thanks! To clarify for other readers: If the mouse and dongle/receiver are paired by 'unifying' (both have an orange symbol) one needs to just buy another unifying dongle/receiver of the same make. But if neither had an orange symbol (non unifying), then there is no solution except the trash can.

@@SWExDeKu1454 Microsoft dongles are factory locked into their respective devices. If the dongle is lost, you're gonna have to purchase another wireless set of keyboard/mouse/both. Use Logitech instead. You can easily replace a lost dongle, just use their software. Also, better battery life and more bang for your buck. Microsoft peripherals are good but terribly overrated and overpriced.
