That's why you don't fly BF on LR quads. Betaflight doesn't use the magnetometer at all, and that's why you got lost, iNAV would follow the home direction given by the magnetometer. Glad you made it back!

@vikranttalim3 жыл бұрын
Nice Video. I have been watching your videos and they are quite nice. I use iNAV especially for long range as RTH(Return To Home) feature is very handy when you are in such situations. It just gets your quad back to the exact same location (1 to 2 meters drift at max) and you can even have it configured to land. No manual intervention what so ever. . Once you hit RHT it will align itself to the home direction that way you can switch off RTH and take back the control. Just though of sharing it with you. Thanks !!

@@ValleyFPV Exiting video! Thats also my experience. With inav the quad turns to home more precise. Inav uses the magnetometer to keep track of the orientation. With that the fc knows the orientation even if the quad is not moving. Betaflight doesn´t need a magnetometer for gps rescue. It considers that the quad moves and that changes gps coordinates. From this change it calculates the direction in which it is flying. So it lags behind. And also in windy conditions where the quad gets offset by the wind it has to work harder I found. Thats how I understood it. Correct me if I´m wrong...

Great video and nice to see the quad return home in one piece - you always learn a thing or two from flights like this. When you have directional antennas, it is always a good idea to keep tilting your head when video goes bad. And may be you could have stayed in the rescue mode a bit longer when you activated it for the first time on the way back - it could have given the quad the right heading, a better video and may be it would have helped realizing where home is. I have never done long range but I fly my 5 inch like 1-1.5 kilometer away sometimes. I have an omnidirectional vtx antenna and 800mW of vtx power.

I crashed a few days ago, because when triggering gps rescue I accidently switched it into stability mode and because I was so nervous I didn't really care. It came directly into my location but it was still 300m high, so I disable gps rescue and tried to descent quickly, so I lowered my throttle down to almost zero. And this was a mistake! Motors stopped and started to spin backwards and after this point it went into a roll of death (motor desync) and after 20s it crashed straight into the ground. Even moving throttle to 100% did nothing. It still rolled with 1.5A of current draw. I just couldn't wake the motors back, no matter what I did. It fortunately crashed 20m away from me into the grass. So there is one point to remember: never descent quickly when in stability mode or disable "motor stop" for stability mode, otherwise your drone will go to the roll of death. I always take off and land in stability mode so I really like this motor stop function (so when your throttle is down, the motors don't spin), but I never went into a quick and and long descent in this mode to this day. I learned something I guess :)

Nice flight and already quite some time in the air with some nice passes for a first flight in that location! Long range is indeed sometimes scary stuff when something unexpected happens. I use inav for actual return to home, I would highly advise to also use inav since it is build around long range and has many rth options you can setup per flight to which altitude you fly in which "glide" ratio you want to go home etc. especially around mountains its very usable, when loosing any link radio or video you've a high chance of getting it back, with gps rescue it will be a defenite long hike in case of any link failing and not returning to a working state. Also, your compass indeed seemed to not work properly which made this whole ordeal happen. I would look into that, it might be because your gps is at an angle on your drone (or not but because youre flying it is at an angle and then it cant work properly). ideally the gps/compass must be at the same angle as your fpv camera, because that will be the angle you fly at. I am not sure if your able to (i am assuming you use betaflight and not inav or smth) you must also setup in your flight software you have your gps/compass at a certain angle, so at 20 degrees for example. So it knows it is at an angle and can counter that. Then the flight controller can get a clean readout from the compass. it knows the gps is at in angle and it knows from its own flightcontroller what its angle is, which should be equal when flying forward making the gps also point straight to sky most of the time. It seems to me there might somewhere a mistake with how your compass (your home point) is behaving. because it kind a works but not properly. Keep on pushing! :)

Super cool, Video loss is always scary. If I'm being honest I don't much like your antenna setup... Super high gain with a fairly narrow beam.. they'd be great on a tracker, but on your head not so much(just saying most people's head will move a lot when you fly, and that doesn't pair well with a super high gain..). I've done 4 miles on 5.8 with a VAS 3turn and a triumph with almost no signal loss, and I have excellent coverage. Maybe going to a similar setup would help you a bit. I'd hate to see you lose an airframe 😬😎

Thanks for watching. They say hindsight is 20 20... I was having issues with my video feed over time degrading, was chasing a better signal.. as I had progressively worse and worse video. I went from a VAS Crosshair Xtreme to a 6 turn, to a 12 turn. Turns out that my VTX side of the system was the culprit and was degrading in its output. Now I'm going back to more reasonable receiving antennas and agree with your suggestion. I did flight the other day 3 miles with no issues after a new VTX and pigtail was put on.

That was intense. Question: How does a different position of the home arrow in the osd makes it more "accurate"? Or do you mean more intuitive to read when it's at the bottom?
@ValleyFPV3 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for watching. What I intend to convey is that for me I have discovered that with the RTH arrow on the bottom of my screen, it is more intuitive now. When it was at the top of the screen it was pointing to the "sky" towards the home point. Now.. at the bottom.. it more so points a rough straight imaginary line to the home point. I have since moved it to the bottom of the screen and now fly with it in that location. ON short flights, this wasnt such an issued, but when I was on top of a mountain and at long range, the usability of the arrow location became more obvious.

I have not had very good luck calibrating the compass in my gps. And having the quad pointing up or down can make it change too. Even if RTH seems like it is going off course initially, it aways corrects itself. So far anyway...
@ValleyFPV3 жыл бұрын
I tend to agree. The RTH arrow sometimes seems pretty off if I am not level..
@kibbycabbit3 жыл бұрын
While connected to Betaflight Configurator, if you notice quad autocorrect after you turn quad around, you have compass orientation setting wrong, keep changing till it stops autocorrect. In my case, CW270 Flip for example may be correct - but it depends on how you put the compass on quad. Not all modules are made the same.

I cant answer that. Also depends on which motors, props, the desired total battery weight, and your flying style and motor amp draw needs.
