The interpretation of the film becomes pretty obvious if one understands the lyrics/voice-over of the song being played on the porn video in the scene where Pete sneaked into Andy's house. I don't speak German, but in one version of the film I saw, the lyrics were translated in the subtitles. They read: He has been prowling around the church. It has been a year since he has been alone. The pain has made him lose his mind. Every night he sleeps next to the tomb of his beloved... Fred actually committed two murders. First he killed Dick Laurent, his wife's lover. Some days later, he killed his wife as well. The film actually began in the morning after he committed his first murder. There are many subtle and not-so-subtle references to the O.J. Simpson case. Lynch acknowledged that he was "obsessed" with the O.J. case at the time he wrote the script. Near the end of the film there was a shot of Fred driving down the highway with a fleet of police cruisers chasing him with lights flashing, except that he was driving a black Mercedes instead of a white Ford Bronco. I laughed out loud at that...

I have always think that is a simple history told in a very complicated way. Fred suspects his wife is cheating on him, follows her one night, kill her lover (Eddie) and then proceeds to chop his wife into pieces. I agree with your idea of Pete been a dream or a fantasy but I believe he comited every murder we see on the screen (including Andy). The thing is that we the viewers have the version of how Fred remember everything happend.
@batman.darthmaul5 жыл бұрын
My favorite Lynch film. I generally agree with your analysis, but I think Robert Blake's character is a personification, a projection, of his guilt over killing his wife. Fred spends the entire film in denial over this. He can't face his own guilt. Thus, this is the reason he hates film cameras, because they record things the way they actually happened and not the way Fred wants to remember them.
@69jumponit5 жыл бұрын
rene is the mystery man.
@Ploobie864 жыл бұрын
I would also say that Robert Blake's character is guilt. Fred seemed like the type who was always dealing anger. The Mystery Man only shows up when Fred starts to consider killing his wife, and what drives him over the edge is the fact that his wife has been making pornography films, which makes Fred feel inadequate, and that's why he's not able to perform sexually, and the condescending pats from his wife as she says "it's okay" is what makes him finally decide to kill her (and the people she was making porno films with). Plus, the Mystery Man shoves a camera in Fred's face and asks him who he is. That fits "guilt" more than anger, because avoiding guilt is what make it possible for people to avoid coming to terms with their horrible actions.
@AlexG-xl1cc4 жыл бұрын
So when the Mystery Man is chasing him that is his guilt. But why is he recording him with a camera as he does it? Is it a symbol for the reality?

Pete is his innocence learning the truth about his wife and her shadow life making porn videos and being with Dick Laurent. Only in the end, the Mystery Man, his real conscience isn't lying to him and is recording it all, to show him the truth that he wanted to be hidden. It’s appropriate that you use the Mulholland Dr music theme, because, for me anyway, Mulholland Dr was kind of a Rosetta Stone to map out the way Lynch thinks. I always suspected Lynch was so disappointed that Mulholland Dr was understandable that he created Inland Empire out of revenge.

everywhere you go there you are. there is no pete. fred creates pete in his own mind. fred has difficulty sleeping. the prison doctor gives fred a sleep aid and says 'now you'll sleep' thus we enter into the dream world created by fred. with the introduction of mr. eddie even the created world begins to crack. then when andy shows up as andy in the 'dream world' the crack is torn asunder. at the end of the film when the created pete has failed fred in totally escaping his / fred's fate, fred then begins to create another persona. everywhere you go there you are. fred madison = madison ave. ? pete dayton = daytona 500, a race that goes around and around; basically going nowhere. freud said that the two most basic human impulses are sex and violence. the mystery man is the personification of fred's psychosis.

I saw echoes of the twin peaks in this film for sure, it had a very “black lodge universe” theme going on like signature Red curtains, being transported to another reality, a mysterious powerful persona and characters who seem to be pulling the strings backstage, and ( what I thought ) were doppelgänger’s or evil twins. When I first watched this film I thought it was exactly that, there were two worlds colliding through alternative dimension. I think, Like “Mulholland drive” and others David Lynch possibly used similar story hints from Twin Peaks to kind of trick the audience into believing it’s the same thing going on, then gets to give it a nice twist in the ending, like in Mulholland Drive where they were actually dead the whole time. In this case I never even considered that “Lost Highway” everything was just going on in his own head, I thought it was a total alternative universe he entered with his wife and himself changing places with their doppelgänger’s to avoid being killed or a million other theories. You gotta admit the man with the movie camera, the cabin on fire, and the cinematic passageway between the two worlds was literally the dark Highway shots in the the opening scene. After watching this video I must say I’m changing my theory, this one really makes a lot more sense, however, at least I don’t feel too stupid about it, if I’d never seen Twin Peaks I would have came to this conclusion much sooner. Anyway I’m a total sucker for films who make no apologies for not explaining everything and actually making you think, doubt yourself and come up with sometimes crazy theories to explain what you just watched. There is a big difference between a Movie and a Film, and a lot of in between. Lynch is among the filmmakers for sure.

to me.... lost highway is 98% inside the head of a man who, with a iinperfect life has murdered his wife and created a life INSIDE himself to balance jealousy, guilt, rage, loss..... thats hes either felt, or created in his life. the main point of the film is.... we cannot hide who we are, we cannot hide what weve done... there has to be balance. Even if we tell noone..... its always inside us. Dark cannot exist without the light.... and vice versa Almost all of the film takes place inside the head of fred..... there are clues throughout for this... one of the biggest is the mystery man stating hes at freds house and that "Im there right now".... given the mystery man is actually very obviously fred... in abstract projection, that would also tell us that fred is also there right now... . Meaning hes also in his apartment.... therefore we are seeing inside his head.... if you watch the film with these ideas.... everything slots into place.... fire is rage, blond hair is lightness to his wifes hair (darkness).... everything is opposite, its there to create balance. ... its all a creation of fred to counter balance what hapoened in his real world....where he has just gone mad and living surreal existance, after he brutality murdered his wife. essentially its also a story..... of a man gone mad. Lynch is big on balance (dark has to exist so we can see the light.... that runs through twin peaks and mullholland drive). Fred created the light to balance the dark. The flashing at the end.... is both combining in confusion when fred dies in the electric chair as he is put to death for his crime. Theres much much more to it... but thats the gist of it

In your aim to be concise you left out too many things. The versions of Renee and Alice are actually much closer to one another then first appears. Fred has trouble handling Renee's also troubled past and what drives him is not so much his lack of being able to satisfy her as his jealousy because he believes she is being unfaithful to him with Andy and his associates and this is echoed in the Pete section, possibly exaggerated by the suppressed emotions in his mind. Lynch also does not make such a clear-cut distinction between which characters are real and which are a fantasy which is reflected by the detectives reappearing.

With Lost Highway, the Mystery Man shows him the truth he wanted to forget. And once shown, he kills his wife. The story of Pete shows him the other side of his wife's life that he refused to see. That is why Pete is the embodiment of innocence, with the exception of that one night that his parents were afraid of him. So Pete is a reflection of Fred, and its the truth crashing down on Fred once he puts the pieces together, and in the end. It is after he murders his wife and tries to elude the police, and trying to escape into a new identity (feels closer to home with the Black Lodge) not just an execution, but the pain of becoming someone else after knowing the truth of what happened.

yes I think you're spot on, it's similar to Twin Perfect's amazing analysis of Mulholland Drive, simply because Lynch explores the same themes with a different story in that film. While I think you're both right, another interesting thing is this thematic framework is just one level of what Lynch is exploring. There's all the psychosexual stuff, the nature of reality vs nature & dreams, a subversive suggestion of the boundaries between them being perhaps looser than we imagine - the Mystery Man performs the same role as Bob in Twin Peaks - an 'inhabiting spirit' that serves as a conduit between two worlds. With in my opinion the view that perhaps there's some overlap between the two. I'm not sure, it's difficult to say but there seems to be some mind bending questioning of the fabric of reality. And then especially within the fantasy worlds there's a high level intellectual and aesthetic exploration of 20thC history, the early 20thC city, its dreams and urban decay, the decay of those dreams and the same with the 1950's. As the benchmark 20thC American dream or posited as its apex, its ghost lingering in the soul and psyche of America, the decayed dream spawning evil it's rotted so much contrasted with the shimmering innocence of the dream itself back then. Also note the Mystery Man's shack and its reverse slow motion fire is I believe that of the famous nuclear test footage showing that shack erupting in flames from the nuclear blast. This connects directly to Episode 8 of The Return where the nuclear bomb test creates an opening in our world for the evil of Judy spawning Bob into it. It appears an archetypal representation of the evil we've released into the world by tinkering with and detonating nuclear bombs and like Bob in The Return, gives way to the advent of the evil of Mystery Man, in the desert.

Great Analysis👍 I was thinking the other day,that sometimes you wake up and INSIDE your dream,you are sure,that a certain person appeared in it and then you wake up and then you realize,it was a different person all along. Because of that weird feeling I have ,when I wake up from a dream,I had to think of that "transition"sequence ,when Fred becomes that other guy. It's adding to that nightmare-ish Feeling of the movie.

This one is actually pretty linear. Renée was caught up in a gross snuff film porn underworld and when Fred found out he killed her and dick Laurent. He couknd handle his guilt so he dissociated into a dream. It's a lot like mulholland drive but with an awesome soundtrack!

Lost Highway will always be my favorite David Lynch film however Mullholland Drive and The Straight Story and Eraserhead and Twin Peaks saga and Blue Velvet are all amazing as well.

I think he was dead the entire movie hes just driving through purgatory(the lost highway). He's reliving 2 lives on repeat the highway never truly ends.

I watched this when it was new and I was only 11-12! I’ve always wondered since then what exactly happened! My step brother was a big Manson fan and that’s why we wanted to see it.

Lost Highway is as simple as the explanation you provided. Nice and clear cut albeit very unique film. I think people go back to this after Mulholland and Inland Empire and try filter this film through those films more complex 'arcs'

Tom, this was a succinct explanation of the plot. However, Fred's agony is not explained the way I think is correct. Fred's frustration is not related to impotence. Fred distrusts his wife, he is in agony, that's why he cannot emotionally get close to the woman, though he loves her. In the last dream of his life he starts from a different starting point with another girl and another life. But mysteriously her beloved woman comes into his life and he succumbs to the woman once again. He loves her and at the same time he hates her.

Heard it was based on a Greek myth about repeating life over and over again. I'm drawn to this movie partially due to its perplexity. Mission accomplished Lynch!

At 2:24, the guy on the left is Louis Eppolito. He was one half of the infamous Mafia cops. Two New York city detectives that moonlighted as hitmen for the Lucchese crime family. After he retired from the force he tried his hand at acting and landed several small roles, including a cameo in Goodfellas. While retired he and his former partner were indicted by the FBI for crimes they committed for the Lucchese family, including several murders. They were both convicted and died in prison.
