For previous festive instalments we have examined a variety of unsolved crimes and murders, all of which took place over the Christmas period. For this year’s episode, we will be exploring a disappearance that took place in the American state of Nevada. An enduring mystery, in which substantial evidence was uncovered and made accessible, yet provided little assistance to the investigators. The story of a man who became lost in Las Vegas.

when people disappear without a trace, they've most likely passed away, otherwise in the modern era of CCTV cameras, cellphone signals, digital trails, credit card trails etc. it's very difficult to just disappear

re-examine the CCTV footage. Unless there are posted signs saying no parking in the street then why didn't Steven park in front of the house he wanted to go to. He was also carrying a sheath of papers. He doesn't live in that community and he's unemployed so he may have been delivering those papers to someone as an odd job. Lastly, as he's walking in view of the camera a small tree blocks our view but it would only take two or three steps to reappear on the other side of the tree and he doesn't reappear before the camera fades out. This suggests he turned and walked across the street. Has law enforcement ever interviewed those homeowners in that community.

Las Vegas doesn't have CCTV cameras at every street. The city, while a huge grid work, only has cameras at key points on the larger/heavily used roads, most of which have had a history of car accidents. Any wealthy community would have their own system, which ends at the gate of the properties. Considering how many houses are out in the city that is 47 x 52 miles wide, with patches of barren land in between at certain points, dry washes, and how hilly Henderson is, there is a lot that could have happened. This is not including how Henderson is the 'vacation' place of a lot of LA gangs. For a Mormon to NOT go to a local elder in the area to find work is what perplexes me. They have a tight system for helping their own find work and have a place to stay. It is something a Mormon cousin of mine always bragged about at holiday settings, being an elder himself. It doesn't help that people are heavily transient in this city, staying 6 months to 2 years, on average. This is why we have such a high outgoing of residents verses those who move and decide to tough it out. Vegas was run by mafia, and have a great deal of strict rules, being very paranoid, seeing every case in the worst light until evidence proves innocence. Where else can you hear of someone getting 2 years in prison for picking up and eating 1 candy bar without paying for it? I don't find this to be supernatural, unless it is just how dark the human species can be in this desert. Vegas has a strange quality to it, and seems to bring out the darkness in some folks and makes it easy to become 'lost' in a variety of ways.

Considering his movements across different districts, and the papers he carried, I was thinking along the lines of him inspecting land/property to buy, maybe secretly as a surprise for his family? But he didn't have any money.

The first commonalities in this case are those towns: mesquite, wendover and of course vegas...all getaway gambling spots and all in nevada. A HUGE number of utah residents visit mesquite and wendover, daily. So sounds like he was gambling and winning enough to keep him coming back to wendover, a few hours away from slc and mesquite, a few more hours and then vegas to try for those big wins?Check the cctv footage in all the casinos in wendover and mesquite...thatd be a good start.

I can relate with Steve's behavior. I acted in a similar fashion this year, leaving home and traveling long distances without saying a word, and keeping it to myself. During that time I was dealing with severe depression, and being a typical guy not wanting to give away any evidence anything was wrong mentally or emotionally, would put up the facade that everything was fine. Acting fine, living fine, but deep down be unraveling inside. Think of it as a silent form of major depression. And it's bad.

I live in Salt Lake City, Utah, and especially back around 2009, knew some colorful characters in Las Vegas and Wendover. The sort of people who might at least have heard rumors about what happened to a dude who disappeared in Vegas. When this case got public attention in SLC a few months after Koecher went missing I made some casual inquiries to friends in Wendover, Vegas, and a few towns in Southern Utah. I heard the same thing from every one of them: nothing. Not a damn thing. As far as anyone I knew could tell, the dude wasn't into anything shady or illegal, or at least hadn't visited Wendover or Las Vegas for the purposes of conducting illegal business. He hadn't pissed anyone off, hadn't made any questionable friends, and none of the shady people I knew had ever heard of him. They hadn't even heard about someone else in their social circles who might have known him, and being a clean cut Mormon guy, he would have stood out in those social circles. It would seem that either he had some manner of accident and ended up somewhere inaccessible--the desert is very big, and mostly empty; Vegas, big as it has gotten, is still a comparatively tiny speck in the desert--or else he had a random encounter with someone who did something bad to him. Random encounters with bad people can be almost impossible to trace, because the lack of connection to the bad actor leaves the police with no way to connect victim and criminal. The funny thing about that though: if he was the victim of a random crime, why would someone do what was clearly a very thorough job of getting rid of the body? Why go to the trouble if no one can connect you, the criminal, to the victim? I suppose one could argue that the best way to get away with a crime to erase all evidence that one ever occurred, but again, Koecher wasn't some desperado with a bunch of bad dudes after him. He was just an average Utah Mormon. On the other hand, what the hell was he doing driving all over the desert before he disappeared, especially if he was low on cash? Long solo drives to cities like Vegas amd Wendover, and visiting old gfs is the kind of thing people before they go away forever--one way or another--but once again, Koecher seemed to be a religious guy who was close to his family. Not the usual type to off themselves, although I suppose anyone might be that type if the brain chemicals become unbalanced. This case has always bugged me, because it happened in my own backyard and over a decade on, no one knows anything. Either someone is the grand champion not only at disappearing a body but also keeping his (her? their?) mouth(s?) shut, which would be equally impressive and spooky; or whatever happened was entirely accidental, and genuinely unwitnessed.

First off I want to wish everyone on the Bedtime Stories Team a restful, healthy, and merry Christmas. Second, in light of the events surrounding the disappearance I can't help but wonder if the person who drove Steven Koecher's car out to the retirement community and subsequent CCTV footage was even Steven. It was as if it were a different person entirely. Perhaps he passed elsewhere and a criminal either got rid of the car or seized an opportunity to relocate the car to keep blame off of them while taking the phone? Was the person in the CCTV footage proven to be Steven or was this only suspected?

It was Steven. Arrin Stoner has done a lot of work on this case and posted a lot of videos. Have fun with that rabbit hole
@Someaddress555s
@Someaddress555s 9 ай бұрын
From what I've seen it's not 100% confirmed to be him, even when zoomed it it gets blury and the guy Arrin who is referred to with his own channel allegedly uses AI to fill in blur/black in the video so who knows. It's one of those cases where people are jumping onto AI and other tech who don't fully understand how they work or that they can have flaws just like a calculator if one of their inputs is wrong. 21st century tech literacy levels on full display. Most likely he just disappeared and wanted a new life, then 2nd most likely is he was doing something for money that got him in the wrong situation and 6 feet under the dirt.
@Mr_Fairdale
@Mr_Fairdale 9 ай бұрын
@@Someaddress555s the chances it wasn't Steven are slim to none. The police and nearly every reasonable youtube true crime "detective" channel agrees. It wouldn't make any sense at all to ditch his car in a quiet suburban neighborhood either. He left Christmas gifts in there. It wasn't wiped clean and left at the airport or pushed down a canyon or left in a sketchy area with the windows down and keys in it, etc. If you want a car to disappear there's a million better, more obvious places to ditch it. Steven parked the car intending to return to it.
@Someaddress555s
@Someaddress555s 9 ай бұрын
@@Mr_Fairdale see the second paragraph where I already had covered your laborious reply about my 2nd choice being he got in over his head, which is why his car was left somewhere remote likely by whomever he was working for driving all over? Again no camera is 100% his face, so anyone with a similar body type is him now in your expert opinion? I'm sure there are tall skinny guys all over Vegas, how are they not Stephen too since we don't need to actually ID his face in any camera under your expert opinion?(I watched the guys videos you claimed, and again he even says it's his opinion not an actual allegation due to lawsuit potential) You never needed to attempt basic gaslighting that "nearly every reasonable true crime 'detective'" only agrees with your assessment, especially when no camera footage has ever been 100% confirmed to be him in it again with no clear face shot on 2009 tech. Chill out please, I didn't respond to you because you seemed like you'd flip out and you did. All I said is no the camera footage is not confirmed to be him, and you even agreed chances are "slim" so what set you off today cupcake?(Added:Guessing you had a bad christmas?)

I always talk about a call, like a radio signal sent to one specific person, which makes them do odd things, and just take off and disappear. Either there is some mental health, brain issue that we are not aware of, or something seperate from the person, that makes them behave that way or just straight disappear. Perhaps the signal gets disrupted sometimes, and people travel around doing odd things. I believe anything is possible, this man either had something wrong within himself, or some outside force was controlling him. Incredibly sad and distressing for his friends and family.

I agree with the fact that sometimes digital evidence can be confusing, however with the advancement of obtaining the digital evidence maybe they can go back and see if anything was overlooked it happens all the time and there’s no need for it, I mean stop focusing on one suspect for another that has nothing to do with the crime, such a bad idea to drop everything for one person

Maybe they should investigate the exact model of phone Koecher was using- if it was an older model, it may not have locked. It's possible that someone else took the phone in a misleading direction for whatever reason, which would obviously frustrate any search effort. The Police were incurious in their use of dogs also. This opens up more questions.

Write a book about this and call it “Lost in The Meadows” and I have a pretty landscape of natural meadows with poker chips and playing cards just thrown on the ground. (Las Vegas in English is “The Meadows “)

I find it weird that they’re focusing on where his car was abandoned as the location he went missing, when he clearly left the area… rather than focusing on the last place his phone pinged. What’s interesting, is the last location, there’s nothing really there except a gas station and a strip club, a few industrial buildings that close in the late afternoon. It’s a shady area at night because only the strip club is open at night. It’s interesting that his phone would ping there in the morning, it sounds like church boy may have spent the night at the strip club and gotten mixed up in something. Why he would abandon his car and go there, is a bit of a mystery… I know Mormons kind of founded Las Vegas and there’s a large Mormon population, maybe he met up with a Mormon friend that lives where his car was parked and they spent the night at the club. Interesting case.

Heard of a case of a family that went on holiday to Vegas and lost everything (including their knickers); had to hitchhike back to Wichita in a beat up '79 VW Beetle owned by the leader of a "Hippie-Commune-That-Time-Forgot" who was (thankfully) passed out from too much peyote and Bud Light when the family "borrowed" the vehicle. True story. 💀

Him being broke is a huge clue. He had no job, no money, yet was making "random long trips" between "random" cities and lying to everyone about what he was doing. Yet he was "super religious" and couldn't possibly have been doing anything wrong because of that....😅. Yea...the dude was most likely transporting drugs or something illegal for a decent fee. He doesn't have to do drugs to profit off them. In fact, a religious and pretty straight and narrow dude would be preferred in this kinda thing. If you are giving someone a large amount of drugs and sending them on their way in a car, you would probably want someone who didn't do the drugs you are transporting, lol. So ultimately, he probably got in too deep with some nasty people and couldn't get out. Maybe he lost a package and couldn't pay for it? Maybe he said or did something stupid and pissed someone with a short temper off? Who knows. I'm willing to bet that he was transporting something illegal.

@benjalucian1515 nor would they if the people who had him do it sealed them properly. The way that "professionals" pack, seal, and transport drugs usually keeps dogs from smelling it. If he didn't do drugs himself, the car isn't going to have anything laying around in it either. Someone probably knew he had a pack on him and stole it from him, seeing it as an easy mark and disposed of him in one form or another. It's also possible that he showed up to meet someone he was supposed to meet with, and something didn't go right for one reason or another. When it comes to things like this, all kinds of options are on the table. However, you can't just assume that because drugs weren't found, they weren't involved. To be honest, I would not expect anything to be found. Like i mentioned earlier, someone obviously took whatever package he had if this is indeed what happened.

@@jedimindtrix2142 "If they packed it right" being the operative phrase. These guys are low IQ morons. They're not likely to do everything perfect every time. If he'd been transporting for some time, traces would be left and these dogs can pick up miniscule traces. The fact that he also got dressed up and had a file with him leads me to believe he wasn't meeting a source
