@@packratswhatif.3990 Yes but I did it over a 20 year span. I think Lost in Space was in all $60.00 20 years ago. Some series less than $30.00. I did it at my pace, not with a locked in monthly charge. Then there is the no commercial aspect. Plus if I do not have it, most of what I like to watch is on TV. My antenna brings in about 100 channels and watch about 40 of them from time to time.. No charges except a little help installing it. I think $100.00. Normally do myself, but my legs don't allow that anymore. Like I said I will not pay to watch commercials and butchered editing of shows. Another reason I like the DVDs. When done they sit and wait for the next time. Just finished Rockford Files and Now Sanford and Son. In the last 10 years only bought two series. 10 years no charges

Based on the book "The Swiss Family Robinson", Lost in Space started out as a great premise for space-themed TV show, but CBS didn't give them any kind of decent budget so they were forced to use second-hand props and scenery from other TV shows. Then the script-writing just took a nosedive from the believable to the incredibly silly and unwatchable. The show became a laughingstock and still is.
@Oldbmwr100rs3 жыл бұрын
Consider also while it started out serious, a really bad show called "Batman" was a huge hit, and studios instantly wanted their own shows to compete with it's campiness. Dr. Smith started out as an evil character, but was turned into what he became, paring up with Will and Robot. Guy Williams was less than impressed as he was supposed to be the big star of the show. Unsure if the show would have made it trying to be serious, the producer wasn't exactly known for "star trek" kinds of productions, being his work was closer to that of cheap schlocky action shows. It wasn't the studio alone who did the cheap sets, Irwin Allen loved reusing whatever he could find to add flair to his shows.
@everforward86513 жыл бұрын
The show started out on a bad foot when in the first episode the spaceship was referred to as "intergalactic," and they had a huge photo of the Crab Nebula when the craft got into space. I'm thinking that Allen was always more interested in providing an adventure serial for kids than a serious science fiction show. The original premise was wonderful, however, and the show could have been a memorable work of art.
@everforward86513 жыл бұрын
@@Oldbmwr100rs There's a difference between being a bad show and being a deliberately campy show, which is what Batman was, and why it was a work of art. On the other hand, Lost In Space was unintelligent entertainment, whose value is mostly nostalgic for people who were kids during its first run.

The goal of all those shows from the late 1960s was to sell color TVs. So you would be watching in on your B&W TV, and then happen to walk by an appliance store that had a TV in the window playing the show, and you would say "Wow, look what I have been missing" and want the color TV.
@peterward22753 жыл бұрын
It started off so well. The first few monochrome episodes were quite chilling and reminiscent of first season "Space:1999 " Then it went downhill very fast.
@roberthaworth89913 жыл бұрын
"Batman" is what happened to it. The juvenile skew of that super-hit show in Spring 1966 forced LiS -- which ran against it head-to-head in most markets -- in the same direction. That, and the fact that (as was his wont) Irwin Allen lost focus on the management of the show and scripts once he'd gotten it on the air; he preferred to pursue new projects while leaving production to his clutch of mostly inexpensive, journeyman directors who had little "feel" for sci-fi.
@bostonjedi3 жыл бұрын
As much as I loved this show and how innovative it was... you are absolutely right. Yes, reminiscent of space 1999 and maybe of UFO as well. It could have been great but not in a tongue and cheek sense. Too bad they couldn't have had two versions: one serious and the other one as it were. But still love it to this day.

I was 10 years old when this show started out. Watched it the reruns all way through my 14th year. I don't know what happened when I was 15 years old beings a teenager I suppose I moved onto other things. The 1960s there was very little information about other planets that allowed the show to be more outrageous. To actually get around fast as they did you would have to be traveling many many times the speed of light. The show greatly depended on the ignorance of their viewers and it beings the 1960s they didn't have a shortage of ignorant people.
