Glenn and Bessie Hyde constructed a homemade boat for a daring trip from Utah to California down the Green and Colorado Rivers, navigating the perilous Grand Canyon. Despite Bessie's lack of river experience, Glen envisioned achieving instant notoriety through this daring expedition. Over the ensuing weeks, Glen and Bessie traversed through the Colorado River and reached the Grand Canyon. This is where the Hydes would last be seen alive.

Thank you all for watching! I always like an outdoor mystery. The conspiracy theorist in me thinks Bessie killed him. I look at what Adolph Sutro said, that Bessie seemed like she was under duress and wasn't enjoying it. And reports saying that Glenn had to pick her up and put her in the boat. Idk, could be just as simple as falling off. But to you river experts, bodies eventually wash up rivers? Especially when you had many people searching for them. Anyways, what are your thoughts?

I seriously have no conclusions and this is a great mystery. I would think getting lost or drown was most likely. But I am most surprised by how many women claimed to be Bessie years later (only to rescind their claim later).

It is quite the mystery. I'm also not an expert on rivers, but I wonder if their bodies had sunk and then were eaten by animals. The bodies could've also gotten stuck somewhere in the river that prevented them from surfacing, and then devoured by local wildlife.

I've done the canyon solo, rim to rim. I've been all over the side canyons. Did the full multi-day river trip from end to end. (The water is cold, and the rapids flip rafts regularly) I say all of that, to say adamantly; The Grand Canyon is nothing that ANYONE, regardless of experience level, should take lightly. It's an amazing but seriously unforgiving place!

I was thrown out of the raft in the Provo River in Utah. I hit the water softly, but I suddenly was shocked by the grand power underneath me. I wasn't in the rapids, but the river was full and moving swiftly. I could almost feel the weight of the river underneath me, as it enveloped my body. So heavy and strong it shocked me. I realized my life was in danger as I started to be taken down past the only exit from the river. I swam with all my might perpendicular to shore and I made slow progress until I grabbed a friend's leg. Nobody had noticed I was floating away because someone was thrown out into a pipe that tore his leg open. Here in Utah, we're all outdoors people. We are too fearless in a way. Everyone is ready to try anything because there's always someone there who's done it before. And there's so much to do. You learn as you go. But looking back, I didn't know too many things and was lucky. When that river is as full as it was, it takes lives every year. I'm more careful now so I can avoid... An Outdoor Disaster!!

I cannot believe Bessie was forced into the raft for that journey, no way. With no life jackets those two were asking for trouble. They must've succumbed to the Rapids. Such a beautiful place; the movie The River Wild was filmed in the Grand Canyon i believe. Great acting by Meryl Streep, who did most of her stunts and trained for it; and Kevin Bacon as the baddie. Some of your video is repetitive, but the old black n white pics are very interesting. Thanks for this story. 👍🩵🏞🧭

I always look forward to your videos, even when they're stories I"ve heard before, because you add so many more details, information - has a lot more "width" than others I've heard. These just flow, stay so interesting with respect and I can almost see the story the way that you tell them..and of course, the tips at the end. Thank you for another great video!

Your comments are always so kind Paula. I appreciate your kind words. I put more "width" into my stories because it's just in my nature to want to know more. I will scour the web until I've exhausted all the relevant resources to feel like the story is complete. And I'll read over my script constantly to make sure it "flows". Many times I've moved stuff around or just edited it out because it felt like it wasn't needed or didn't help the story flow. Thank you again my friend!

Much as one wants to believe in the conspiracy or more fantastical stories of murder, mystery, new identities and all that, most often the simple explanation proves out in the end. As mundane as it seems, more than likely one went overboard and the other went in trying to save the other, both then drowning (especially considering the state of the raft and the supplies and items remaining within). Still, great vid and what an interesting story and trip. Would also love to see @TheMissingEnigma to do a vid on this.

Absolutely agree. Brad Dimock's book in particular is excellent. This story has been sensationalized for nearly 100 years and it's really not that crazy of an outcome. 232 rapid got one or both of them in the water, they both wound up drowning or dying from hitting those rocks.

As I was watching this for a few minutes there was a knock at my door, and I had to pause the story to see who it was. Pizza Hut, delivering a large sausage/ pepperoni pizza and some chicken wings. When I returned to watching, I just felt way too much guilt to start pigging out stuffing myself with all that food. Just thinking about what these brave incredible men had to endure and to have lived through that ordeal! I guess I'll have to have a midnight snack in a few hours when some of the guilt has turned into my stomach growling.

I went on a guided rafting adventure in Lachine quebec when I was a teenager. Very small in comparison to the canyon but exciting the less. I was sitting directly in front a d to the right of the guide. Unfortunately, his foot anchor strap gave away and as he was falling backwards he grabbed onto me for stability which in turn sent me to the bottom of the raft !! We finished the rapids and I was never able to see or enjoy any of it as I was stuck in the bottom the whole time. They did however give me a voucher for another run at a future time but I never did make it back there🤷‍♀️ great video as always and loved the mystery of long ago and all the suppositions that follow..well done✌️

Another interesting mystery from outdoor disaster! I could speculate on what happened to the couple back around a hundred years ago but enough people smarter than me have done plenty of that. I can only imagine how perilous of a journey these two embarked upon so it’s no surprise that they perished but what is surprising is that they did so without leaving a trace!
