@@mema0005I think we'd benefit as a society if we paid a bit more attention to and helped one another. Personally, I can't pass by stranded drivers or riders. I know there's a teeny tiny chance that they may be a psychopath so I exercise due caution, but that pales in comparison to the dozens I have been able to help. Even in cases where I'm unsure (vans give me the heebie jeebies) I still let the authorities know. We have to hang together or surely we'll hang seperately, right? edit: And kudos to the locals who noticed, found her, and rescued her. They were good people!

@@mema0005 You're not wrong. But in this example, they almost surely knew someone was missing in the area. So those footprints were likely something they were looking for, and they knew right away who left them. It's also not a significant risk for people familiar with the area and environment.

Yeah they could keep that dog. Left its human being out there to die with no hope of being found. Just said “screw this, I’m out….”…. Not do you want to go with me? Or I think there might be something over this way, let’s go look….. Nope. Just see ya see ya wouldn’t want to be ya! Yeah that dog could have stayed at the village for the rest of its days. My turn to say see ya see ya! Almost forgot, before that animal left, it sabotaged the water supply…..tipped it over and then said “I’m out.” Nope. Good luck speaking villager language. Another thing I'd advise is one of those emergency "blankets". I'm not sure why all campers and hikers don't have them- they take up almost no space and even if you need to leave your pack, it can be carried in a pocket. It can keep you warm, shelter you from rain AND is large and reflective so if people are looking for you by air and the area has any open space, they're much more likely to see it. You can get the cheaper ones for less than 10 bucks (and if it falls apart because you got lost and had to use it a lot then it's worth a million times more than that) and can weigh as little as around 2-3 ounces.

The Canyon is indeed unimaginable huge. There is a tale of Spanish Conquistadores coming upon the canyon and telling their guides that they intended to cross the canyon, fording the stream at the bottom, and camping on the other side. The guides looked at the Europeans like they were bonkers and said something like, "We'll be lucky to get down to the river today, and, if we can cross the river, climbing up the other side may take another day or two." The Spanish had no frame of reference for how large the canyon actually is.

I wonder how many times the dog tried to lead her in the right direction. Whenever I bring my dog out to go hiking, I occasionally let him lead on the way back out just to see where he goes. He never fails to lead me back in the direction of my truck(which I always carry a supply of food in and feed him before the hike). I leave food on the ground every now and then as bread crumbs which I feel is effective in motivating him to take the right path even if I were to become unsure. As an aside though, I hike in the desert in areas devoid of bears and other such predators. Nobody should take this as advice in any way. Leaving any amount of food on a trail in a place with a population of dangerous mammals would probably be a terrible idea.

Today, you need a permit to visit the Falls so they can track visitors, & you have to camp overnight before hiking in. Also, the trail is well marked, so it’s much safer. I highly recommend visiting Havasupai! It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world! His pics did not give it justice. This is an incredible and miraculous contrast from the first part video. The previous couple had made awful preparations and faced a worse fate despite their experience and 15 years of advances in tracking technology. This woman had everything against her and made the best of it, I think, considering her mistakes were accidents (misreading unclear signage, emotionally lashing out, slipping and breaking a tool). I'm also amazed and so glad that Cocoa Gin made it, that dog must have had incredible tracking senses to find the village alone. And of course, the Havasupai locals were the ultimate heroes. This really was a miracle scenario, despite the awful hardships faced by them both. Thank you for covering a relatively positive story I've never heard before.

The dog was most likely drawn to the scent of water. The village was near the falls and animals have a much keener sense of smell.

The way you paused before you mentioned Coco Gin. You knew we were yelling at you to tell us! Hahahah. I'm so glad for both of them. Totally get why she snapped at him too. I knew he'd find the village, she should have put him in charge from the beginning! She made some bloody stupid mistakes but thank god she survived too. And I bet plenty of people have made one or two of them but they found the thing they were looking for, or it was in a time there were location beacons, or whatever else. It's all stuff plenty of people will have done and just got luckier than her. Your judgement is imparted when you're exhausted and afraid. Although I DID lose it for a moment when she LEFT HER PACK BEHIND. The village were incredible, given how they'd been treated, my god. What amazing people.

This is a prime example of why doing a little route reconnaissance is important. Had she gone over her route on a map, she would have known that she had to make a left and not a right. From that junction, Supai is only a 30-minute hike. At some point, I would have said to myself, "You know what... Maybe I've gone too far and I was supposed to make a left at Albuquerque."

I was waiting, and waiting, and holding my breath in hope, aaannnd - COCO SURVIVED TOO!!! Animal lovers, it is safe to watch this video! (Yes of course I'm glad Linda survived too, very much so, but the way her dog became separated was not the dog's fault, like suddenly running off after a rabbit I'm sure Linda felt a lot of guilt about unintentionally chasing her dog away, and I am so glad they both ended up together ❤️)

She didn’t properly study a local map of the area, didn’t check in with a Ranger Station to ask/confirm directions to her destination, probably overloaded her pack (never more than 1/4 your own body weight) which she stupidly abandoned, and still survived…the locals are awesome for finding and saving her. I find it less of a surprise that her dog survived, than that she did. A dog's senses would make it SO much easier to find a way out. A dog that trusts people would go seek them out, no doubt how he ended up in the village. Unfortunately(at least in this scenario), unless trained to lead people in some capacity, they will almost certainly just follow their owner's lead.

That truly is a fascinating story with quite a few "Really?!?!?!" moments, almost as if scripted. The most interesting aspect of the story for me is the fact that on the day she began her hike down into the Grand Canyon, August 1st, 1975, some 130 miles west of the canyon, in the rural area surrounding Las Vegas, a child was born who would eventually adopt the KZbin channel screenname of "Sky Den."
