Watched this episode years ago while in Cozumel. I even went to San Gervasio ruins here in 2022 to see where he got lost. Now back to Cozumel and watching this again. It’s good that it’s back on KZbin. It had been very difficult to find earlier. Cozumel does not have a thousand square kilometers of jungle, that patch of jungle north of the highway that divides the island is not that big but one can get lost like that if walking in circles. And there’s an international airport to the West of where he was with dozens of daily flights that he should have been able to hear taking off. Also there are no mountains on the island like they showed. Other than that it is a great reenactment with great cast!
@sheilaboston70515 ай бұрын
I just looked up the size - the whole island has a total area of 477.961 km2 - much of the interior being dense jungle and swampy lagoons. Maybe Ken's experience will get added to the list of "unforgettable things to do" while there!
@mommy2libras5 ай бұрын
That's what I was thinking- I've been to Cozumel several times and it's just not that big- only 10 miles across or so, and 30 miles long. If he were able to walk straight east or west, he'd have hit beach within a day. And the west side is basically wall to wall resorts and private beaches. Just goes to show how little "wilderness" it takes to actually get lost. And there's roads everywhere used by locals who lives all over the island. I think people have the idea that this is like the Amazon or something but it really, really isn't. A bit of calm thinking and planning, even just sitting still for a day and finding a spot where you could check the sun's direction, would have gotten him out fairly quickly. He had to be going in literal circles the entire time.

@garyclarke96858 ай бұрын
You know what fascinates about shows like this other than the resilience & mental strength of people but also how so many of these people when lost they don't think about looking up at the sun for directions. There are several ways to tell which direction is north south East West when you do not have a compass but I would have thought looking up at the sun was a no brainer. Everyone knows the sun rises up in the east & sets in the west. Of course the surest way never to be lost is to have a compass really that easy & one couldn't possibly get lost.
@SilvaMorasten4 ай бұрын
exactly, I do the same when hiking, and especially in new places I always figure out where are all four directions, where is the sun, depending on the time of the year, and I have this in my mind all hiking cause it is easier to orient myself. But I know people who just cannot incorporate these "variables" when orienting through the space, I cannot get it, but they cannot get it.

Imagine the Yelp review for the couple with them: “Yeah, so we hired this dude to be our scuba instructor for our week in Mexico. He was great at the diving part, and was a nice enough guy. So, on the last day, we decided to go with him and another instructor to the Mayan ruins. Now, we knew they weren’t guides for the ruins, but because they didn’t employ one, we assumed they had at least the BASIC know-how of the area. It was super hot, we were getting eaten alive by bugs, and before long, the other instructor had ditched, and my partner and I told Ken we were just too tired and hot to continue. We figured he would gladly turn back with us, because again….we’re his customers. But no. He wanted to keep going. He’d ‘be right back’. Y’ALL, THIS GUY GOT LOST IN THE JUNGLE FOR ALMOST A MONTH!!!!!! Not only did we not see the ruins or get a refund, we felt weirdly obligated to stay and join the volunteer search party. Unless you train for survival skills; under severe stress and fear. Many of the most basic skills you would consider common sense is overlooked and/or forgotten. It’s hard to imagine unless you are truly in fear for your life. Then, everything changes. Judgement, memory, fine motor skills, decision making, confusion. Everything gets turned upside down. It’s easy to say what you would do, from the comfort of your home. But, in that environment; in legitimate fear of death (real or imagined), all those plans, ideas and techniques go right out the window. Unless you train for the skills you would need in a given situation; you won’t react the way you think you will.

The San Gervasio Mayan Ruins archaeological site is just 7km away from Isla de la Pasión (The Beach) if you walk through the bushes. Moreover, the jungle surrounding the area extends only within a radius of 10km, not 100km as previously thought.

Considering this island is 30 moles long and 10 miles wide I don't understand how my man spent 20 days out there unless he was walking in circles. I've been to this island 3 times scuba diving and I would say only roughly 70% of the island is actually jungle.

Basic rules for survival, always bring a 4 day survival kit with you. They cost about 35$ online and they consist of water pouches, food, first aid, glow sticks, weather proof matches, rope, a hunting knife, compass, emergency blanket, a fire starter, a whistle, flashlight, spare batteries, etc etc. And they're about the size of a small backpack. Also carry some Vaseline and cotton balls. They make for great firestarters. Vital rules for survival, find fresh water and boil it using a vegetable can or something that you should bring alone. Place rocks in the boiling water to clean the water. Stay put unless you must leave because of predators but even then try not to wonder to far. Conserve your air by breathing through your nose and not your mouth. Suck on a plastic ball or something to keep the Silva flowing in your mouth.

I cannot imagine how you can make the mistake of moving out of range of someone’s voice when you can hear them. Truly bizarre. People need to learn to breathe. I’m not sure how I would act in the scenario but I hope I would take a deep breath slow down and know I’m safe as long as we can still hear each other

The comments are always entertaining. People who have never left the safety of being behind their keyboard telling others what they should have done. “What an idiot, he should have done this.” I can tell you from personal experience what you think you would have done or how you think you would react is often very different when it’s life or death.

I was someone who was lost on mountain and had to be rescued next day. Thankfully I had phone so was able to call for help. I would say that what people don't realize is that your mental capability goes down when you are tired. I am in general smart enough to orient myself wrt to landmarks but on that day I was exhausted due to altitude plus tired. Resulted in taking path that felt like ohh this is it and got lost!

"Nearly 1000 square kilometers of jungle"? Not quite... Cozumel is maybe 450 square kilometers, tops, and that includes every road, beach, house, etc. There's a international airport, two Cruise line docs, about 100 restaurants and 5000 other buildings at least. The fact that he couldn't find a path and simply follow it until he found a road makes me wonder who helps him tie his shoes...

Big lesson - if you're in a situation where you realise you're lost, (or are *realising* that), and the panic is growing - STOP! Physically STOP! The only decisions you will make when you're panicked are bad decisions. As in this case - running around like a headless chicken and getting even more lost and exhausted. Yes, in some situations - if for example no one is aware of your location at all - you may need to move. But regardless of that, NEVER move when you're panicked. NEVER move without a clear plan. NEVER move without a clear idea of how you will get back. In a survival situation, every decision that isn't thought through, is a decision that's going to make your life worse.

So this dude was lost for 19 days in the jungle of an island that's only like 10 miles wide at its widest point? He already had a basic idea of where he was, so he could have walked in any direction but south and ended up on the beach after going for a few miles. Plus, the show made it seem like Cozumel is a dense rainforest with a canopy like the Amazon, when it is really just a jungle where you can see the sun wherever you are. I don't get how someone can be lost that long in what is essentially the woods on a small island. You would run into something sooner or later. It's just a little island, not a vast wilderness.
@mononoko1114 ай бұрын
Absolutely, this show is bulls...I laughed with the "dangerous predators" 🤣The only dangerous predators in Cozumel are some crooked cab drivers that rip people off.

Rule #1 when you think you’re lost. Run around frantically with no idea where you’re going… Definitely don’t stay where you are within ear shot of your friends and wait for help. Take a chance and pick a direction and run, and not just a couple hundred yards, run for miles until it’s dark and you’re completely dehydrated and exhausted. Does anyone else feel like they’re watching the most predictable horror movie when you watch these episodes? “Look, a running car let’s drive to safety. Are you crazy? let’s hide in the creepy butcher shed.” So many of these stories are instances that could 100% be avoided with just a little common sense and better judgement. The series should be renamed “thwarting natural selection” or “Idiots who got lucky”. If you think you’re lost and must pick a direction, mark your trail frequently. Break branches in a certain position or direction. Estimate how far until you should have made it back. If there’s nothing, follow your markers back to where you started and pick another direction again marking your trail and repeat. It’s common sense. How could people think they should just go aimlessly on, and on, and on like this guy. This isn’t an accident, this guy is extremely stupid and almost got himself killed. It was completely avoidable at multiple turns. He tried his best to snatch death out of the jaws of rescue and failed. And that’s how so many of these other stories are…
