i always saw Joel as a dude that keeps living out of spite, he knows that the world took everything from him, not just Sarah, it took having a coffee in the mornings, going to see a movie and everything else, but i think that he feels like he is making the world angry by just being alive, the world its trying its hardest to kill him and he isnt going down, so he keeps going, even if he doesnt have a reason to keep going.

Exactly, funnily enough Joel is trapped in a similar kind of cycle of revenge that Ellie and Abby are in part II, the difference being there's no one person for him to focus his rage and grief on. The man who shot Sarah is long dead, and no one person is responsible for the world falling apart. So he makes it a point to keep surviving out of spite, which leads him to lose more and more of his humanity, until Ellie comes into the picture.

@@prpwnage9296 It's simply not what people wanted. Everybody expected Joel to die, but not in the way he did. Didn't do his character justice. People wanted to see Joel go on a redemption arc, especially regarding to the situation with ellie. They let him get killed by a character that we dont know and have no sympathies for and then they try to force you to like her by showing her playing with her puppy, showing how she has fear of hights and showing her daughter - dad relationship. But that was bound to fail from the start because we've grown to love ellie and joel over all the events that took place in TLOU and then we are supposed to care about a stranger that kills of our favorite character after less then 1hour play time? Also the story pacing is really bad, a lot of times it feels like you are getting nowhere in the story because of the location/time/character switches right when you thought finally the game was getting somewhere. For me the positives in TLOU 2 is the gameplay and the flashbacks of Joel and Ellie. I've read so many comments from people that said that they would've even prefered a game of just Joel raising Ellie an casually beeing a great dad just like in the Ellies Birthday flashback. I think after establishing our characters in a story about love and hope in a dark world, creating a specific, deeply connected and invested audience just to turn your back on them and throw these priciples out of the window to make the story suddenly about hatred and revenge doesn't make any sense to a lot of people. I mean, for what? For a shocker moment? They didnt even have the balls to impllicate that joels dead or at least not taking part for most of the game and they actually chose to activly deceive their fanbase during the games promo-stage because they knew their fans would be disappointed. That alone speaks volumes about what this game could've and should've been and what we sadly got in the end.

Oh I completely agree, I want to make that clear, since I didn't in the video. I think David is pure evil. It's just, per the shifting (or non-existent) standard for morality in the world of The Last of Us, it's difficult to judge his actions as right or wrong against Joel and Ellie's actions. Being a murderer, being a cannibal, being a rapist... there's no enforced law or agreed-upon metric in the post-cordyceps world to weigh any of these as worse than the other. It's all chaos. But otherwise, yeah David can go to hell!

Ive seen so many videos about this game and your is on the top shelf :) 9:20 It still baffles me that Druckmann could create such a beloved game and story that also took inspiration from his own life, but he and ND couldnt replicate this honest to life true magic and well constructed masterpiece into Part2... 16:51 Change is what iam missing from Part2, the game doesnt introduce that level of meaningful change to its characteres at regular intervals. The game is a long redemption slog that drags on forever and forces you to play and like Abby which everyone deeply despises from start to finish. Ellie doesnt change that much, only looses fingers and doesnt find any piece by the end of it...

You're the only person I've seen besides myself that says that what the title of the game refers to is the remaining humanity in people/the characters. Absolutely fantastic video. Now, the part where you talked about how characters need to show some change at the end of each scene or else nothing has happened is easily my biggest gripe with the HBO show. They waste a lot of time not developing Joel and Ellie, and frankly I still don't buy their relationship because of this.
@ArTorrPresents
@ArTorrPresents Жыл бұрын
Your thoughts are interesting, because I feel that is something the show has done really well actually. Every episode ends with a very clear change in the value-charged condition of the characters... more trusting, more determined, more dependent, etc. I do prefer Joel and Ellie's dynamic in the game to the show, but I think that's because we spend far more time with them in the game, and become literally dependent on Ellie through playing as Joel at certain points in the game. Nevertheless, thank you for checking out the video!!
@NaitorYT
@NaitorYT Жыл бұрын
@@ArTorrPresents no problem! But here's the thing. The game has a runtime of about 14 hours, while the show is around 9 hours. They took out pretty much all the gameplay conversations and encounters, but they still take a lot longer to develop the characters, often feeling like they've skipped over important parts of their relationship. It doesn't feel genuine or organic. Instead the jump between personalities. One second they're their new iterations, and the other they need to fulfill a quota to catch up to the game, so they recreate scenes almost 1:1, but the dialogues don't fit their new personalities or situations, and their acting feels incredibly off in those moments. Bella's way of speaking changes considerably, and Pedro becomes incapable of emotion. The exposition dumps also present a problem. The game let us infer that Joel cares for Ellie but he's trying to shut himself off to avoid suffering again, mostly seen in Jackson, and then he changes his mind at the last moment and goes with Ellie. In the show, instead of having this shown to us little by little without needing an explanation, Joel has a 5 minute monologue where he cries and dumps all the exposition for the audience, which makes Ellie getting angry not make much sense, and also rids the winter chapter of its importance because by that point in the show he already stated he sees her as a daughter. Meanwhile in the game the "baby girl" line is a lot more impactful because it wasn't stated prior to the event, and it's a moment after and amidst all the chaos and stressful events they've gone through, which were criminally summarized in the show to the point where nothing has any impact. For example, Ellie luring the cannibals away from Joel. Huge action portion in the game with high tension. The show had her on the horse for 30 seconds before getting knocked out, so we didn't get to see anything of what Ellie learned from Joel about being a survivor.

The only truly righteous fight a person has is defense in themselves and their home. Tess sacrificed herself for Ellie and left Joel alone with Ellie. Shared suffering brings about more attachment and love than anything else. Right and wrong are interesting topics to discuss but the only lie I noticed was Joel trying to tell himself that he didn’t love Ellie or even Tess for that matter because he cared for Tess more than we could possibly imagine. The fireflies were desperate for control and only control. The cure actually meant nothing to them. That’s the other lie, people who gather together always do so pretending there’s some higher purpose but there isn’t they just want what they want and the fireflies wanted control. It’s the same shit I see in people irl, so when I see Joel: I see another man so fucking tired of the bullshit that we tell ourselves, to justify some idiotic behavior, because we have already experienced the truth that there are no heroes there is no beauty no divinity no love or care given from people who don’t give a shit about you there’s just people that don’t care about your story or your family or your ideals. When I see Joel I see myself and I very passionately hate these rules we inflict onto ourselves and others. Rules are important but I find myself being worried to express myself because of what others may think and I hate that suppression. But I have to be careful with my actions because people will abuse the more noticeable people. Joel saved Ellie because he loves her I don’t believe in right or wrong too much but let’s say it is wrong what he did. It’s definitely less wrong than the legit evil fireflies that started their organization to replace fedra and were bound to become sick pieces of shit that would do anything to force their agendas down other people’s throats. Marlene and her fanatics would have used the cure to dominate the populace and only share it with people who bow down to them. I feel strongly about this because Joel doesn’t strike me as a cold hearted killer, I think he just sees things for what they are and I bet his past with Tommy isn’t what we think it is. Tommy is exactly the kind of dumbass that goes into the army and invades other people for “peace”. Meanwhile Joel understands that any attack isn’t peace it’s fucking war.
@ArTorrPresents
@ArTorrPresents Жыл бұрын
Those are... interesting thoughts. I respect where you are coming from, but I think the Fireflies are presented far more ambiguously than what you project on them here. While it is valid to theorize that posession of the cure would've led to the Fireflies becoming a facistic group like FEDRA, it's hard to imagine that a world with a real, working cure in it could be anything but at least a marginal improvement over a Cordyceps-domimated society. Joel kills the Fireflies for one reason and one reason only: Ellie. Joel is a survivor, and moreover, someone who has been on "both sides" and killed innocent people, which the game does tell us. I don't think Joel killing Marlene is a cold-hearted act either, but he does it purely to protect Ellie. It's noble to attach black-and-white to Joel's actions. To support his decisions by villifying the Fireflies, or suggesting he's putting a stop to something before it's too late. I think it says a lot about the power of the experience that, after several hours playing as Joel, we might go out of our way to be on his side. But in the end, there's no denying: Joel loved his surrogate daughter so much, that he was willing to sacrifice humanity to save her. It's extremely selfish, but also done out of immense love. Put Joel in that hospital with any other estranged teenage girl, and he would've walked out. No other conviction about society would've brought him to burn the place down. It was always about Ellie, and it was always about avoiding having to relieve the loss of his daughter.

@@ArTorrPresents The fireflies created a group to oppose the government called fedra to basically replace the power base. I know they say they’re intentions are very nice and noble but usually it’s all lies and they become the same government that they replace anyway. I vilify the fireflies because they’re causing unnecessary conflict in an apocalypse and they’re pretty much 90% responsible for the whole story of the last of us, they try to stop Joel from getting to the girl he loves, and they don’t even let Ellie wake up to give her decision to allow her relief that her sacrifice was valid robbing her of that choice which I’m almost certain she would’ve agreed to anyway. I support Joel because I would rather have an asshole who doesn’t hide the fact that he’s an asshole than the confusing fireflies. Marlene robs Ellie of her choice because it’s too risky and Abby’s dad hesitates when asked if he would do the same to Abby. It always bothered me that Marlene didn’t just shoot Joel in the head or that Abby’s dad didn’t immediately say he would kill Abby for the cure as well at least commit to your bullshit xD I don’t know if what Joel did was right or wrong but this got me thinking about how we define right and wrong and I think it comes down to what’s necessary. I think it’s whatever’s necessary because if you do something cuz ur starving it’s hard to say that’s wrong but if you cause harm unnecessarily then it’s fucked up so I looked up the Latin root. Necessary comes from the word cede which means to give up something so things that are necessary are things you can’t give up. I don’t think the fireflies actually needed the cure or anyone for that matter because it seems the people kill each other faster than the infected anyway. I guess it would give one group more of an advantage over another but we’ve seen plenty of communities thrive in their shitty environments. I think the fireflies had to fulfill their promise or end up losing their authority. However besides all that my main argument for Joel is I haven’t seen him kill people that weren’t actively trying to kill him and his family which includes Tess, Tommy, and Ellie. Maybe Joel did kill innocent people but I don’t know the full story all I know is Tommy is the only one that talked about it and he isn’t really reliable because he’s a joiner not a leader. That’s why his wife was the leader and he stuck with her hard.

I wonder what would have happened if Marlene would have let that firefly soldier just off Joel instead of escorting him out. That way he would have died a father again and Ellie would have never woke up to know anything ever again. I wonder if the vaccine would have worked? Who gets it and how? Could the world eventually be saved, perhaps? Or are the remaining people too far gone? I mean Jackson exists. We came from nothing and nowhere before as a species. We could do it again. Just something I was thinking about.

@@ArTorrPresents I've been a regular viewer of your videos and I have no doubt that you bring much love and passion into each of your videos, but you need to go easy on the bombast when conveying your thoughts. It's not about trying to impress yourself or your viewers with a beefy command of vocabulary and metaphors. It's about speaking clarity and truth in a way that feels like you're putting on a pair of velvet gloves or leaping off a tree into a lagoon below without hitting any branch on the way down.

This vid comes from a deep appreciation and understanding of TLOU universe. It also made me realise that in a world without boundaries we either become our best or worst selves, which makes this game/ series all the more realistic (besides the cordyceps fact being a thing). Thank you for your dedication.

37:09 In this scene, and all it's context, there is a lot more than just the cannibalism that drives Ellie to react so much more violently than expected. David was being creepy, trying to hold her hand, and pinning her down, all these things. There are a lot of implications that David was wanting to or trying to either groom her, but when that failed, at the very end he might have been trying to SA her. Especially in an apocalyptic world like The Last of Us, this sort of terrifying acts might only be even more common. Yes, all the killing and cannibalism definitely changed her, but this might have truly tainted her, or at least became a breaking point. She was not only terrified to loose her life, but to be violated either before or after. Silver Lake is a representation of true reality for Ellie, the reality of people and their struggle, and that even if people help you, their intentions might not always be pure. I think this is at least an important part of everything she had been put through at Silver Lake, and is important to be touched on and mentioned. Honestly watching this scene (I watched gameplay stream's because I suck at video games but wtv) was really hard. It might be hard to notice or recognize if you haven't been afraid of something like that before, or have lived a life of fear of things like this happening to you like so many women do. This was the moment in both the game and show that hit the hardest for me, and made me cry. This game is a lot more reflective of the world/America we life in today than most people think, and all of the horrors that existed before also exist within still. The Last of Us a masterpiece, and will forever make my feel so much.

YESSSSSS davids interactions with ellie always screamed that he wanted to rape rape and was even referred to as davids new pet by his goons. I was shocked the first time i heard him speak as if ellie was scared of being cannibalized when it was quite obviously a child terrified of being sexually assaulted

18:00 "A Plague Tale: Innocence" and "A Plague Tale: Requiem" accomplish this also, especially when played in tandem. At the end of "Requiem", you feel what the protagonist Amicia is feeling. You can see it with playthroughs here on YT. Most of them share a sentence, that the player speaks out loud, under tears: "I don't want to do this ..."

This is a bit off topic, but why is Cordyceps so often referred to as a virus? Isn’t it a fungi that acts as a parasite or do I just need better biology knowledge?
@ArTorrPresents

David was a pedophile; that's why he's also a cannibal. He cannibalizes innocence because he enjoys it. David wasn't a good person or a martyr. He was a monster that ellie slays in order to become a survivor, and joels frequent sorrow and paranoia destined him to pass it unto his close loved one despite wanting whats better for them. It is truly a sad series when you take into account how Ellie becomes joels redemption in the last of us, part two, by trying to break out of the cycle she experiences with the memory of joels mistakes and love. This series is one of my personal favorites.
