Jon, have you ever read Berger's "Little Big Man"? Fiction, and 1800's, but it's all about a man who has to transition from the white to the Indian culture and back. The sequel wasn't so hot but this book is great!

How I understood your readings. The Game warden of the tribe says you must dress like a hunter and not military so the tribe people know not to kill you. They need to see you're just hunting. Also, you must wear the brochess or money on you for trade so if you require our health care services because you have no idea what you are doing, you can pay the medicine wo/man for their services.
