In this very special episode of "Where Are We Now?" we explore outside of Garry's Mod for the first time ever by delving into some wonderfully creative VRChat worlds. The journey is an eerie and lonely one, but it isn't without it's wonders.
KZbin's compression did Terra Cotta Valley so dirty. It looks WAY better if you're in-game. And also, Sensory Rooms got a big update like two days after I played it, so we missed out on having objectives in that world, too. Talk about bad timing.

On the concept of "how long does stuff last on the internet", there is actually a phenomenon called "link rot" where its roughly the amount of time it takes for a website link to decay. Accoridng to one source, "a research study published in 2016 showed that out of a group of 360 individual URLs sampled in 1995, only two remained active after a span of 20 years, while the rest had become completely inaccessible to future generations." I mean sure if you post a YT video, it may last years (I still somehow found videos I used to see in like 2009!), but less popular sites, blogs, and wikis? that stuff can just blow away in the wind like GeoCities!
@loganfromearth
@loganfromearth Ай бұрын
That's super interesting. In my whole time on the internet, I've only found a handful of stuff that's still live from the 90s. Mostly old forum posts about games I try to play years after the fact. I guess that sort of validates the link rot theory.

It seems like one of those things that is entirely up to the people hosting them. Websites don't really have much of a *physical* breakdown and can arguably be up forever if the server host is willing to, well, host it forever. As a result it's pretty common for websites, especially from back in the day, to die rather quickly, because the people running them just don't care enough to continue hosting them. Nowadays, though, a lot of websites are hosted off the backs of other sites, so things like Tumblr Blogs, KZbin videos, etc. can pretty much just exist for as long as Tumblr, KZbin, etc. exist.

One of my favorite things to do is enable community labs and visit worlds people are still testing. Unless the owner is in there testing with friends, they’re completely empty and usually half finished. Sometimes they’re legitimate maps, sometimes they’re just shi-posts. Sometimes they’re fully completed event maps for events that aren’t for another month or so. Either way, it gives off similar (but not exactly the same) vibes, which if you liked this video I highly recommend trying.

I think that ORGANISM represents the theory of Life review, a phenomenon widely reported in near-death experiences in which people see their life history in an instantaneous and rapid manifestation of autobiographical memory. The beeping at the end could represent a Holter monitor as the player is slowly dying, then when walking through the door they experience the memories again because Some one in the real world (Nurse, doctor, friends or family) "successfully" saving the player only for them to reexperience Life review again. The multiple parts of the map could represent important parts in their life, like the snowboard could represent a time where the player went snowboarding with a friend, The snow stalagmites (14:48) could represent a lung failure due to Cancer, Smoking or a bodily failure. The clock room could suggest that the player was running out of time to live. But hey that's just my theory.

VRChat is a beautiful medium for this series and is filled to the absolute BRIM with worlds to explore, there is so much art and passion to find all over. The fact that a lot of the older once popular worlds, used to be filled with hundreds of people each day - hanging out, laughing and making it feel alive, now sit abandoned to be forgotten and maybe visited one every few months by someone stumbling across it. My biggest gripe is that some creators give the game up and a lot of my favorite worlds I saved are now just a bunch of questions marks I don’t even get to see the name of : (

I've watched all of your videos now, but I think your "Where are we now?" videos are your real gold so far. Fantastic video! I've always said VRChat is awesome because of stuff like this. Like, if VR ends up falling out of favor, we should just keep it and rename it UnityChat. Being able to just make a world and show it to people has caused an explosion of these fascinating little spaces. I'm glad you found most of the little tricks TCV has on offer (Except the grappling hook, which is janky enough to be safely skipped). It's stuff like that that keeps me believing in the creative power of the internet. If given the chance, we forge entire multiverses for fun. As an aside: If you do another of these, I'd have to recommend J.R.Oppenheimer's (not that one) "Messages from Within" series: [When the Epiphanies Began, V.I.L.E, THEIR_WORLD, The Firmament, and Shape Collector!] They're surreal worlds with tricky exploration puzzles and a surprisingly sentimental ending, woefully unseen by the larger public. I only namedrop it here since they don't show up in searches very well and the little existing footage has that gopro-on-a-dog effect.

Linux user here. Sorry, i can't resist going on defense for my OS, like a moth to light. There are very user-friendly distros now-a-days such as mint, and with Windows seemingly becoming worse with every new version since 7 in my opinion, it's honestly a better user experience. Granted, there are still more things that can only be done with the terminal than i would like, but it's being worked on, and for 99% of things an average user needs to do, there's a GUI solution. Now, for users that see there computer as just a black box to get work done, i would probably still recommend Windows most of the time, they probably won't care as much about built-in advertising, poor UI decisions/removing customization, overbearing data collection, etc. We're are at an all-time high in market share, and as long as Microsoft keeps doing stuff they way they are now, i feel that trend will continue.

I'm surprised it took so long for one of you to come crawling out of the woodwork! Yeah, I'm somewhat ignorant to modern unix/linux operating systems and their advantages. I will say, when I was studying programming in college before I realized that I kind of hate it, I used to have a dual boot; one for windows 10 and one for unix (I forget which distribution), and it was a lot easier to get things like Java and Gradle to a good workflow for git builds. Even so, I'm definitely guilty of being a user who sees it as a "black box to get work done" as you say. As long as it works, and it's got decent security, I will settle if it means not having to worry about checking that everything I want to use also supports linux.

Organism isn't exactly a "dead" world because a bunch of people still go there and to its two sequels. it seems dead because it's just not as popular due to the platform expansion. there was a point where VRchat was strictly a PC game. when it came to Quest, most of the player base shifted to that platform because of the cheap VR and PC users became less common, and desktop was extremely limited in how they could interact. the best description I can give to Organism is "familiar and nostalgic, yet distant and forgotten", like dreams you've had blending together. playing it gives you a profound, yet indescribable feeling.

41:40 actually, furries go back to the 80s. that title was very much in use by the mid-90s. i'll fully admit i only know this because of the Fredrik Knudsen video.

When I first played terra cotta valley, It felt.. nostalgic in a way? Like, It was a place i'd go to in my mind in an uncomfortable situation, it felt warm and inviting, or maybe it was just because it was a summer night and I was playing with my friends. Anyways, what i'm trying to say is that map is pretty cool.

These 3 are some of the ones I like to show new players. Absolutely unique experiences that capture the varying culture of VRChat. I'd also suggest Complex 7, Ring City Stelle, and Qoo H Bocuma International Airport if you enjoy these types of big maps.

You should totally do a video exploring surrealistic games like hendecad, cement mixer simulator 2003, LSD Dream Emulator, they are so fascinating, it would be really cool to watch!

I feel like Organism is a abstract telling of a life itself. In the beginning it's all things like sleds, snow, tubes and a smaller view of the world. You only really know your apartment building and it feels huge! But soon, you're out there and the world is... overwhelmingly large. There's just so much. The early parts seem to have a more whimsical tone which slowly fades into a darker more dystopian feeling. There's a bridge between the early life and adult life that seems to have a lot of "Entertainment" looking buildings, but beware the pitfalls of this time that could send you to an early end, literal holes in the bridge. On the other side, it's all office buildings, libraries of records, paperwork paperwork paperwork. Duller settings only occasionally broken up by fun looking places that seem to cater more toward an "adult" theme of entertainment (drinks, neon lights, bars, etc.). Eventually you get old. The clock room symbolizes this. Time marches on, but it's running out for you. While not shown off in the video the clock room is insane, so many ticking clocks... that all slow to a near stop as you walk through to the hospital area. You're old, infirm, feeble. Right after the hospital there's a bit I think is actually a rest home. There are small one-room apartment kind of sections you can walk into. They have more "rustic" furniture than i'd expect for a hospital room and less medical looking beds. The baths symbolize how you can't even bathe by yourself now, the icicles how you always feel cold. Then of course, one day you collapse, your mind swims in a swirling vortex that feels incomprehensibly huge. Bits and pieces are remembered (each "phase" of life actually gets a little ice stature on the way) and in the end, it's your choice to die. You have to press the button and choose to move on through the light.

wow we really _do_ need a gallery on World pages fun fact about that CRT shader: the main effect is just a tiled subpixel texture multiplied with the base color, scaled so that there's 1 copy of the texture for each pixel. that's the _whole effect_ lol

So I wanted to talk about vr chat and some ideas and features you might not know about. First, you talked about a cozy place in the terracotta world. A lot of people play vr chat to chill or just find a quiet place with a few friends. Look up worlds with chill, cozy, relaxing, and you'll see so many places. Next is if you want to record in vr, you have an in-game camera. It can be set to streaming mode. This will mean that you can record the camera view and not your view. This will prevent that go pro issue you talked about at the start. Last, if you make more views like this, I'd love to see them.

i really wanna try getting into VRChat but the problem is, i'm very socially anxious. I have asked a friend of mine to play with me several times now but the response is always "maybe tomorrow or another time" i would love to explore some of these worlds myself, but the fact that i am either all alone (which i don't like) or with other people i don't know (which i also don't like) really makes me sad... sometimes i just wished i just wasn't this antisocial...

I'm a furry, if i can pick any body for my conciousness to inhabit, it's gonna be my Fursona And if not, at least i'll have a body that better fits my self perception, mainly something without so much body hair and causing me so much gender dysphoria, probably also do something about my respiratory issues

I'm curious how one off episodes on games without community levels would work. Something like Ready or Not, that might be a little too realistic and not surreal enough, but has great environmental storytelling. Something like that

The windows and linux nonsense has severely died down since windows 11 came along, mainly because even the windows users hated windows In fact my motherboard has an oddly specific issue and doesn’t support windows 10, only 11, so I’m basically forced to use linux or pay a stupid amount of money for my new pc to run

Vrchat has to be one of the strangest places in the online world. On one end, you get to meet the biggest pieces of shit you've ever seen times 10, all phising for attention. On the other, you get to meet and bound with some of the most thoughtful individuals the world has to offer. The nights i've spent just talking to people about philosophy or just random bs and having an awesome time, is something I yearn for. It encompasses the extremes of human expression, and lets people be who they want to be, despite their flaws, in its truest form. I know many would consider this game either some Cringe cesspool, or some HS cafeteria ( which to be fair, there is alot of bullshit in there ) , but it has alot more going for it. It all comes down to the people you befriend. The vibes you seek out. It changes the entire experience.

The reason why y38 won’t kill the power grid is because of the sheer amount of legacy equipment they’re gonna run until it doesn’t work anymore, like sterling or 2 piston engines type shit Even the newer generators are mechanical and manual At worst your power meter stops counting and you get a funny number on your bill

Absolutely love these videos man. These explorations are so relaxing and so beautiful. Getting to see the undiscovered art of hidden map creators is amazing. I love the art you are bringing to light. Seeing these stories that the map creators have engraved in their work without any characters is so fascinating and I am drunk on it. Please keep up the good work, I cannot wait to see the new episodes in this series.
