Indeed they are. There are various White City buildings (foreground and background) that were reused for the MM7 intro stage. Also I'm curious, with all the activity and multiple enemies in White City, I wonder if it was a test stage.

My head cannon is that they reuse the concept of the white city from mmx into the intro stage (eurasia colony) from mmx5, since x5 references a lot of stuff from previous games, to me makes sense

It has nothing to do with MMX, but Freedom Planet 2's second stage contains a background heavily inspired by White City. (This was confirmed by the developer herself btw.)

They wanted a darker more bleak tone for this "new" X series. So they removed RX and RY as his mega pals (too similar in tone to earlier Mega Man NES games with Rush and Beat.) The white city was broad day light and very bright, but it didn't give off that darker serious tone ("imperial" at most)

I totally agree with what you say... I just think thought it could have made a cool game mechanic/story arc to see this bright city in the beginning of the game then as you play through... things get more dark and bleak. White City looks *extremely* like the opening stage of Mega Man 7 to me, so I think it just got grafted into that game to help the two look distinct (it's a great contrast to X's opening highway)

It makes sense, as those elements seems to be closers to things you'd see in original megaman games while the X series was meant to have a darker/more serious tone, which doesnt really fit with those characters or even vibrant stage, so yeah definitely a design call on the team part.

Great insightful way to look at it. I personal always looked at it as a transition from bright present to dark future as you progress through the game. @@Wild1UnknownZero seems to have been created by Dr. Wily, as is evidenced by the appearance of the Dr. W in the gem on his forehead in a cinematic in Mega Man X4. That makes Sigma’s word in the ending of X2 a bit more cryptic. Among other words he spoke were these: “But… something is not right… I do not understand… why did Zero… ? He is… last… of the Doctor’s creations…” When you put those both together, there is heavy implication that Zero was Dr. Wily’s last creation. If not for the Dr. W, though, I would have thought perhaps Dr. Cain created Zero, since nowhere in Dr. Cain’s journal in the manual to the original Mega Man X does he mention finding Zero, and only mentions him when X decides to join the maverick hunters after Sigma went maverick. That entry states that Zero is the new leader of the maverick hunters, but nowhere does it mention his creation, or him being found in a capsule like X was. Heck, we don’t even know what happened to Dr. Cain after X3, which is the last time he was seen or mentioned.

Well, here's the thing...if GamePro Magazine played that White City demo, then wouldn't that mean that there are Mega/Rock Man X prototype cartridges that are still floating around, let alone remnants of that place, RX, and RY, also possibly being in the code that is in the final game that literally no one had uncovered yet? OMG! I remember seeing this article in a magazine and I (being a kid) took my notebook out and copied the drawing of X. I later showed it to my friend and he was astonished and couldn’t believe it. When I got a chance to show him in the magazine, it was gone. We couldn’t find it anywhere and I didn’t know which one it was in. So, we were thinking that it would show up somewhere else soon and he could see it then… nothing! The screenshots were in other magazines but not that particular drawing of X’s design! My friend never said it, but I think, he thought I made it up. Until now! Unfortunately we have long lost contact with each other.

The other mystery you should solve is X's original final armor (similar to the concept art shown in GamePro) except he has the ninja mask on with yellow, white, and blue colors. As well as an alternate upgraded X Buster design. Someone walked away with an inflatable version of this full armor megaman at a game show. Never seen any other artwork for it outside of that image of the woman with the inflatable X.

Ok, this is really crazy and I hope I don’t start a lost media wild goose chase, but I could have sworn that when I rented Mega Man X back in the day that there was a level that looked just like this! I remembered thinking how cool it looked and how I would have liked to see a movie or show that takes place in a city like that. Years later, I played the game again and I couldn’t find the level. I figured maybe it was a bonus level or maybe it was from a Mega Man NES game I also rented once (I don’t know which one) but I could have sworn it was specifically Mega Man X. I never heard anything about this actual missing level until now. I’m thinking that maybe I saw this in a magazine (I was subscribed to Gamepro and had a few issues of Nintendo Power) and just mixed up my memories.

Interestingly enough, there did in fact end up being an RX character in the megamissions Rockman X card game in Japan. Rockman RX. X's evil clone from a reploid DNA mimicker parasite which attached itself to the inside of X's buster. This idea was more or less ripped off by Nintendo for Metroid Fusion, for the X parasite, SA-X. There was some lawsuits over this.

@@Wild1Unknown I have a figure of this RX character from BanDai. It looks like X but with chrome dark green armor, and his head crystal with the control chip more closely resembles that of Sigma's. Also some purple streaks down under his eyes. If you look up the megaman wiki, or more specific, the Rockman X megamissions, it will tell you. On image search, you will see in some where X is fighting a clone. It started out with green armor which later became black armor. I think RX had the black armor when it fought X. There was three megamissions series. I think there's a fourth now. I believe RX is now iX, and reverted back to the green armor but with a somewhat more serpent look.

What version of MMX was used for the footage? Those effects and graphics look super clean. I'm normally not one to like updated/smoothed retro graphics, but those buster shots look amazing. You know I think I remember actually owning this magazine back in my youth, I mean when I was between eight to twelve years old, before I could even read properly (yes I am dyslexic, I wasn't reading properly and completely till age 13 when I took up written on my first PC) and all I was looking at was the pretty pictures and genuinely believing their was some special hidden stage I could reach if I did special move on a very difficult gap on a very difficult stage.

Two things: 1. What is that game you're playing? It's not the original SNES version of Megaman X. 2. I, as any fan would, would like to play it as it's a removed stage and those are always intriguing towards what the game could have been and it's not. But I am glad that the twilight skyline city we got in the final game was chosen instead. It fits the grim atmosphere a lot better. It makes the game give a very serious first impression.
