@@vickidespretter2828 I remember once visiting Argyle Street, with my boyfriend in about 1984. The house looked very rough with plaster coming off the walls. It was really cold but there was an open fire.

My mum's mum and my uncle were one of the first tenants in Normandie Tower. They moved from a council house in Lakenham, a few months after my mum's dad died (December 1965 I think). Mum's mum died in 1974 a few years before I was born but we used to visit my uncle and from the 13th floor I had a good view of Argyle St in the 1980s with the squatting going on! There was a big flower painted on the road entrance. I also recall watching the new housing being built from 1985 or thereabouts. Coincidentally in the late 1960s my parents were offered a council house on Argyle St! They turned it down as it was damp so they moved to the Heartsease instead. My uncle had to move out of Normandie Tower in 1993 on health grounds to a bungalow on the Heartsease but he sadly passed away the following year.

More great memories John. I had my first paper round on Argyle St in about 63/64 The newsagent was on, I believe was called, St Catherine’s Plain, which looks to be just Queens Road now.

Thanks Paul. Yes, St Catherine's Plain appears to be part of Queens Road, and there's a parade of shops there still.

I wasn't expecting that! There are some towns and cities where one has to look for the interesting buildings; my hometown of Ipswich is an example. Then there are towns and cities where it's very obvious, and Norwich certainly fits that category. This video has shown that what at first glance is a pretty ordinary residential area may have a few secrets and surprises. As always, thanks for uploding yet another fascinating video.

When the police cleared Argyle Street, some of them moved to Cromer, and that is when the Cromer heroin problem started. In the 1990’s human bones were discovered in the play area in the site of the former church. The police were called and determined that the bones were from the graveyard!

Thanks for reviewing argyle street.l've been looking out for it and wasn't disappointed.Was Lorne place part of it,or just another name for it. I also understand that it had been a pleasure gardens previously,as in Vanity Fair.Thackery.That might be an interesting video,if you don't mind me saying.hint,hint.
@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich3 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked the video and thanks for commenting. I have not heard of Lorne Place and the name doesn't feature on old maps of the area. That's not to say it doesn't exisit, it's just not referenced. As I understand it, the please gardens were above it. It was called The Wilderness, and features briefly in this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKSpdHhne7WlmcU
