I love that the little pits from casting, blacked in end up looking like it's battle worn and adds to the authenticity of it all. What 3d printing and cnc machines have added to casting, etc is mind blowing. You said in a previous comment that you think this project it too niche to get a lot of likes, I say don't trust someone who hasn't see terminator! Beautiful work.
@AndysMachines3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, you're right. I could polish it further and make it all shiny and perfect, but I'm deliberately leaving in some of the marks and even accentuating them to give it a slightly worn/weathered appearance, which I think is a lot more fitting.

Really ... looks like a Terminator skull some random human freedom fighter looted from the battlefield and brought it back to his people like some kind of trophy. The little ditches and cracks in the metal just give the end result a unique finish. Not too perfect, but I really like it.

So glad to see real machine work on T800 ! I’m sure you will get great reviews as I did in 2002 for my fiberglass bondo unit I made for my computer repair store ! I made my skull by freezing and print screen of the move as the terminator was chasing Sarah and Kile through the factory. If I had a 3D printer I could have made a ton of money selling them for man caves! So many people offered me money for the unit in my store, it was ridiculous! I did a wax model and aluminum casting but ran in to the same as you did but worse! Not knowing what I was doing! Good luck and great job!

Thanks very much! Not as much time as you might think, as I would have to finish and polish the metal parts anyway, I only cleaned up the worst of the 3D prints, plus I prefer to work with metal than plastic and I actually left some of the rough print texture in some places to give a weathered appearance which I think looks more authentic.

You're getting better and better with these builds dude! Might I suggest putting some sprues on the parts to let the metal flow to the places it's not reaching, and to make a vacuum table so you can vacuum cast, that'll stop most of the issues I see :)
@AndysMachines3 жыл бұрын
That actually is a vacuum table at 3:00 though I didn't go into detail on that in this video, it worked really well for the small parts. But yes, you're right about sprues, some of the larger parts I couldn't cast on the table (jaw, back of skull) failed because I made the sprues too short and there wasn't enough pressure to fill the mould.

3:21 I don’t understand when / where you used this sprue. Did you make lots of them; one for each of the other pours? The video makes it look like it’s kinda just another skull part….
@AndysMachines2 жыл бұрын
The sprue (and pouring cone) is formed by the rubber sprue base you can see at 1:06. The actual sprues were either sprue wax (1:12) or 3D printed as part of the pattern to fit directly into the sprue base.

Ok this is amazing work. I just want to know how the original t800 was made? All cnc parts or like this? Theres no images if sram building parts of the original t800...🤔
@AndysMachines3 жыл бұрын
I believe the original movie props were sculpted in clay then moulds made, they were cast in resin and then painted. They used various small objects for some of the details, like a gearbox from a RC car and other small plastic modelling parts. They had different puppets for various shots, including a 60cm tall one for stop-motion filming. I don't think there were any computers involved, no cnc or cgi was used, probably preliminary sketches all done on paper too. You can still find some information on the stanwinstonschools website, though I think there was more there in the past.

@AndysMachines2 жыл бұрын
It's a manual lathe that I have added basic CNC control to. I use it mostly as a manual machine so didn't want to change anything that would make it awkward to use normally. I have stepper motors on the leadscrew and cross feed that I can quickly mechanically disconnect when not in use. (One with a clutch and one by removing a belt).
