The Kagerou Project (KagePro for short) is a multimedia story. Unlike some forms of entertainment that adapt the same story into different formats, KagePro tells a different part of the story with each medium- music, manga, light novels, and anime. Though the story seems the same, it covers different “Routes”, similar to alternate timelines, that will be explained in more depth in the story. Music route: the songs are all on KZbin! You can find many English covers, like Will Stetson’s, here :) Manga: “Kagerou Daze” 13 volumes. Light Novels: “Kagerou Daze” 8 light novels. The manga and light novels are interchangeable in reading order! The manga has a pretty different story that details a bit more of the lore/backstory, while the novels give you a better understanding of each character. The anime: “Mekakucity Actors” is a 12 episode anime by Shaft that faced a lot of criticism. It serves as a finale for the series, but it wasn’t very well received (many fans dislike the pacing, rushed ending, little explanation to important plot points, and other factors. For people new to the series assuming it as a simple adaptation, it was confusing and difficult to follow.). It’s recommended that you view the anime last if you want the full experience! It’s an incredible story with great music and wonderful, well-developed characters. I hope you give it a try!

THANK YOU WILL! Oh my God, I think I finally get it. I've been stumped for years why both Shintaro's made it out of the heat haze, or at least Route 1's! Now hear me out-Guys, we know that to enter the heat haze, two must die at the same time, both must enter, and one may leave, right? Well, I feel, since these two Shintaro's are from different dimensions, that the Haze only takes in couplings-and I mean this in the fact that someone HAS to leave the haze OUT OF A PAIR. Ayano was the only one to enter alone- in both routes- so when each Shintaro died, each guy acted as the 'second person' in the coupling. That's why at 3:58, we see each Shintaro reaching out for Ayano, only to be sent back home! Sweet Jesus, you have no idea now long I questioned that -and it took rehearing this cover to understand!

@@creativecarrot1996 Alright, I’ll explain this. We’ve got two Shintaro’s. Red Shintaro is from Route 1, Black Shintaro is from Route XX. In both Routes, Ayano commits suicide prior to the actual story and ends up in the Heat Haze Daze. However, she’s there alone. To get into the Daze, you have to die on August 15. To get _out_ a second person has to die and enter the Daze, and one of the two is allowed to leave with a Snake. In either Route, Shintaro dies on August 15. This where things get confusing. Now we have to talk about a Manga Route. Manga Route 2. In Manga Route 2, Ayano becomes the Snake of Retaining eyes by Marry’s power after tragedy befalls Shintaro and the rest of the Mekakushi Dan, in the form of the Snake of Clearing Eyes possessing Konoha. Manga Route 2 takes place prior to Music Route 1. Furthermore, at the end of Manga Route 2, Shintaro wakes up in his Route XX outfit. This indicates that Route XX happens after Manga Route 2. In Route XX, Black Shintaro can’t handle the weight of Ayano’s suicide. He never leaves his house, ends up somehow killing Ene, and eventually commits suicide, entering the Daze. Black Shintaro still can’t come to terms with Ayano’s death, and never actually leaves the Daze. In Route 1, however, Red Shintaro _has_ come to terms with Ayano’s death. After the Snake of Clearing Eyes possesses Konoha, it attempts to shoot itself in the head. Shintaro stops it from doing so, taking the shot, dying, and entering the Daze. Shintaro, having moved on, is able to leave the Daze, gaining the Snake of Retaining Eyes (which is actually Ayano herself, weird, I know), which remains with him for every Route thereafter. Both Shintaro’s wake up on their beds, but quite not in the way you’d think. Only Red Shintaro is within the same Route, having left the Daze with the Snake of Retaining Eyes. Black Shintaro is actually in a different Route, one that takes place at the end of Manga Route 2. What BlackCat2022 seems to have thought was that two people need to die on the _same_ August 15. This isn’t true. However, this led to them believing that both Shintaro’s acted as each other’s second person, allowing entry into the Daze. This isn’t the case, as Ayano is each Shintaro’s second person. Note that the Daze has very vague and quite inconsistent rules. Clearly, the second “person” doesn’t even have to be a person, as Seto enters the Daze _with his dog._ Hell, what Snake a person ends up with isn’t even constant after the time each Route starts. This is apparent in Hibiya’s case, specifically in Manga Route 2. In Manga Route 2, Hibiya gets possessed by Clearing Eyes instead of Focusing Eyes, while Hiyori gets Focusing Eyes, violating the “only one gets out” rule. This is most likely because Clearing Eyes doesn’t give a rat’s ass about rules.

Putting in consideration of the anime and manga *spoilers ahead*. My theory is that the Ayano in lost time memory is actually The Snake Of Retaining Eyes and it was waiting for the right Shintaro so that the group can get a happy ending. I mean she literally disappears and then Shintaro gets his eye ability. I personally think that the Snake Of Retaining eyes needed to almost mark it's vessel which is why in the anime Shintaro didn't need to go to the Kagerou Days and take a snake since he already did that in Lost Time Memory. Also the name itself Lost Time Memory could imply that both timelines the song takes place in are pretty much destroyed at the end just like the rest of them.
