Ah, the race card. From Meghan Markle to newly convicted serial killer Lucy Letby, the issue of race manages to pop up in almost every facet of our lives. Are things really that centered on the colour of our skin? Or are we just a divisive species by nature, entirely unable to just get along? Join me as we discuss how the race card is being wielded as both weapon and shield from every angle.

Agreed. I would also say she fully understood the damage it would cause in both sides. Not only has she damaged the reputation of the British Royal Family and the country, she has also undermined the very real issue of racism that still exists. As a black woman I have experienced racism. I’ve also witnessed a white person experiencing it too. I can go both ways. In the case of Meghan Markle she used this as a weapon when it suited her need for pity and to excuse her atrocious behaviour. It was also a means for her to get what she wanted. A ticket back to the USA to continue what she really wanted to do - to be an actress - a terrible one at that. Lucy Letby on the other hand is a despicable monster that abused her power and caused untold suffering. The doctors weren’t listened to, and I don’t believe for a minute that this was anything to do with race or sex. Great post as usual Pluto

How dare they not marry and have kids with white people! Aren’t there enough white people in their family already? What a stupid comment she made, I hope people complained to the channel like Markel did with Pierce Morgan. And I will never buy a Glamour magazine again, I’m really starting to get irked by the people who don’t think they are racist, but spew racist remarks about whatever group they deem it acceptable to offend. I think Lucy Letby got away with it because people thought she was a competent, caring nurse and the way she did it was purposely done to not draw attention to the death, or herself. She was an absolutely diabolical person, her skin could have been purple in my opinion. I think both male and females in health care are considered to be too caring, too compassionate and they took an oath that says they will not hurt anyone so no one thinks they would, but this is the 2nd nurse recently to get caught killing. One male, one female… Anyways, also want to say thanks girl, keep the videos coming, we need more rational, sane voices.

Black American here and I absolutely cannot stand when people abuse their race for “gains”. Anyone can be racist and if I hate it if someone said something ignorant to me, I will NEVER be okay with it being done to someone lighter than me. What’s wrong IS wrong, period. I have many friends that don’t look like me at all and I’ll be damned if someone says something ignorant about them around me, because Diary of a Mad Black Woman will be shown😂😂 Meg never cared about being black because she passes well. She knows that. Black people are not fragile little children who needs constant help, we are more than just “black people”, and Meg doesn’t understand that. She (and others) want us to go back to 1950s America because that’s the only thing they can actually fight against. Now that it’s not as prevalent today, they try to MAKE racist situations to fit their narrative.

In Megan & harry doc, I was perplexed at the references to the 'British Empire' and the history of colonialism etc. But if you knew anything about what the royal family actually did, youll know that most of QEII's reign involved her going to the Independence day ceremonies of post-empire countries. The Empire used to have 57 overseas territories. By 2015, it had 14. QEII's reign has been the single most decolonial career in history. Britain/ the royals didnt resist when countries wanted independence. We sent our queen out to wish them well.

I don’t agree that the skin colour played a role but rather that she seemed like a nice, caring young female dedicated to her nursing profession which by definition is to save lives and especially in her branch looking after the most vulnerable patients premature babies. She was also clever to document with texts her pretend upset by the deaths and almost as if she had been so unlucky to care for the babies that didn’t get better. She was calculated like any serial killer tremendously helped by the internal failures of the medical system where the people in charge are not specialised doctors and are paid to avoid the blame being put on the hospital. Nothing to do with skin colour which just remains a speculation for race baiters, but rather other provable factors that allowed the serial killer to go on for as long as she did. Truly truly horrific and the hospital executives that did not listen to the doctors’ warnings and their repeated requests for investigation much sooner, should be held fully accountable.

I have seen the 'race card' frequently used here in the UK. So many, that I'd have a long list of colleagues and acquaintances who have over the years fallen back on this as a means to either get what they want or to get away with something they did. One example of many; when I was a student nurse, another student on the same nursing course physically assaulted a ward sister during placement. When the university started an investigation he stated that the university was institutionally racist and the whole episode was quickly swept under the carpet. Rather than being disciplined for slapping a woman across the face, he was moved to a different hospital to complete the course. The university was simply too scared to discipline him or do anything about this. He was homophobic and a misogynist and frequently made made offensive comments. He also openly disliked white people, even though he had made the decision to come to the UK from the Caribbean and live amongst us. Each time he was challenged for making an offensive comments he stated that he was being bullied due to his race. I'm gay, and I occasionally challenged the homophobia when it was really bad and each time he accused me of being racist. He completed the course, and now works as a qualified nurse - at least he is still on the NMC database. If I had said 1/4 of the things he said in lectures I would have been off the course within a week. It's getting worse in the UK; every day this issue is in the papers or on the news. I have to say it scares me.

I saw a video the other day. This beautiful black woman (I'm a latin woman, so you know my context, I'm not white, perfect blue eyes at all) anyway, this black woman said and quote "I won't date a white guy, because I'm proud of my heritage, my colour, I wanna keep it Pure and not mixed it" I totally respect her point of view, my only thought was: Can you imagine a white person saying that? Can you imagine the level of backlash?????? Everyone suffer from bullying, everyone has suffer rejection, anyone has felt uncomfortable by someone else. People please!!!! JUST RESPECT EACH OTHER! Everyone has their one special features, NO ONE is better than the others. Just respect and be kind! 😢

Agree! I once saw a fab video that showed a black screen with dancing white skeletons (like an x ray). Out from behind the screen would come the performers being shown-all races, both genders, straight and gay, able bodied and disabled, different religions, etc. point being that underneath our skin colour we all have red blood and bones. We are ONE species-human! No one is better than anyone else!

It may not make a difference to you or I, but obviously there was evidence to the contrary during the trial. Otherwise why would you pose this question? I didn't follow the case. I only picked up on it when she was sentenced. I think her parents were over protective & she was spoilt rotten. Then when she couldn't have the Dr she was in love with she took her anger out on the weak & innocent. She was wicked & vengeful. She would have killed the weak and frail no matter who she was nursing. This is gender based & not about race at all.

@@alidabotes6264 sorry, I'm not sure what question you mean. I can assume the gender played its role as we're kind of wired to see a woman as more caring and safe to trust with children (very misplaced trust sometimes). As to the skin color, I can't see any reasons why it would play any role so talking about white privelege feels like a stretch. Like, we can assume that the management would've been more cautious about a black nurse but can we actually prove it? Are there cases that prove such bias in this larticular hospital? Maybe I'm missing something, I live in Eastern Europe where the general discussion isn't that race-focused.

I love the weapon and shield metaphor-- as an American lawyer, I remember the concept of "sword and shield" from law school, and I wrote on another creator's Patreon (but deleted my comment because I didn't want to be accused of being racist) that MM uses her mixed race as a sword and a shield. So thank you for using that metaphor better than I could! I can also name a good number of mixed race actors off the top of my head who seem to have no trouble finding work because they're actually talented, so perhaps rather than blaming her race for her lack of casting on race, she could simply say that she wasn't right for any of those parts, which could be for any reason, including a lack of talent. Lots of talented people don't make it, and it seems that a lot of success is the result of being in the right place at the right time and, most often, knowing the right people. Additionally, the people who've had great success in Hollywood have not coasted on the assumption that other talented people will write parts for them or want their presence because it sells tickets regardless of their talent; instead, they work hard and not only continually improve their acting skills but also diversify their skillset, e.g., writing, directing, producing, etc. All of that knowledge and experience translates to being a better actor and likely a better co-worker overall (because you understand how to make everyone else's job easier and more enjoyable) so that people actually want to work with you rather than avoid you because you're a stuck-up nightmare (like MM).

Your story about being racially abused awoke a memory in me, I lived in rural SW France in the 90’s with my four school aged children. We had absolutely no issues with not being French (the children were in French schools) except for one parent from our tiny village. (We rubbed along very nicely with the locals apart from him). I should mention that he was unemployed, was a stranger to soap and water and was claiming social security, drank to excess every day and had a (lovely, much younger) wife and five children at the same junior school as my two younger daughters (not the wife, just the children 😂). In an desire to integrate I went along to the parent/teacher association meetings as did this male. Due to the slurring of his words and his regional dialect (which I now not only understand but speak with) I missed that he was being passive aggressive regarding my children and me being at the school (foreign) and he apparently was objecting to the french tax payer supporting their education even though he didn’t contribute to the system, he just took, It escalated when this male reported me to the Mayor for driving dangerously fast up to the school parking. The hill was really steep as it was a fortified village on the top of a hill. I drove a 2CV and there were five of us in the car. I would think that I was only in first gear. His children regularly shouted derogatory anti English remarks to my two daughters in the playground. I pretty much ignored his nastiness but the school’s headmistress told me that in her opinion his behaviour was racially motivated. She reported him to someone (dont know who) and they left the village and were returned to Marseille. I was pretty hurt at being picked on for being a foreigner and feel very strongly about people who are of other races being singled out because of their race/colour of skin. It’s vile.

I have been at times unfairly judged - it can feel demeaning, crushing - people willing to form opinions without facts. It has happened in a church, the workplace, a neighborhood, a social circle. I'm so incredibly happy you have brought this subject up for us to discuss. It's what drew me to your channel in the first place. I read the article and know a little about the horrific crimes. However, I was thinking of a different case that happened in the States in the mid 1990s. It was the case of Mary Kay Letourneau, a white middle aged school teacher who slept with her 13 year old student and got pregnant by him. It's a rather bizarre case and like this case in the UK, should be looked at from different angles. I am sure race plays into in a case by case basis but as a true crime fan, there is a societal thought process that women are maternal figure that nurture, heal, and protect. Lizzie Borden was found not guilty of killing her parents because the all male jury did not think it possible a Sunday School teacher would hurt anyone. That thinking still exists to this day and can be applied to other things like Meghan and Harry, if their genders were reversed and a man isolated a woman from her entire support system, people would be a lot more concerned but I'm not taking his agency or actions away from him as Harry is an adult. In conclusion, no one case or situation should be viewed through strictly racial or gender lenses but I believe true equality should still be the goal and that all genders & races should be judged solely by the content of their character as MLK said whether it be good or bad.

The NHS is a very difficult place to accuse anyone of anything untoward, regardless of race or gender. It's an organisation that struggles to call out anything unproven because the protections (particularly for registered nurses) are very robust. The reparations made to people with unproven accusations against them can be costly and hugely problematic. My guess would be that this woman was able to talk the correct talk in the right places to manipulate the situations and convince folks of her innocence. I can't say if racism was part of it, but I doubt it. The NHS would have been even more careful/less willing to accuse if the person was of any race other than Caucasian.

I would like to see the evidence provided to show Lucy’s treatment was based on race. Otherwise it’s solely a projection on the part of the author. Lucy’s case is all circumstantial and it took months of complaints and meetings for the police to be called. So complaints went in and the hospital admit they didn’t want to look bad. It was pride, not race. It was hubris and “it’s too hard” on the part of the exec and Lucy putting in counter complaints with possible legal ramifications, not race. Can I send the author one of those pick up grip and grab sticks?…. Cause she is reaching. *sarcasm* As a fat old nurse, I’m saying Lucy got away with it cause she’s young, thin and pretty and if it were someone like me, it’d been dealt with earlier. So it’s ageism, and that other social unconscious bias where pretty people get treated better. See, I can project issues where there aren’t and use woke ism’s too.

Being a Brit, I can tell you in the case of Lucy Letby, after the trial, which was one of the longest, lasting 10 months. The overwhelming evidence showed, the reason, it went on for so long, even after complaint's were made, is the Hospital, Trusts, didn't want their reputations tainted. As it was all circumstantial evidence, they didn't want to do an inquiry, but in cases would move her on, on restrict her to non ward duties. It was to do with reputation, not race. This is coming from someone, who is not white.

Thank you for this video. These are topics that I have dealt with and as a teacher have really seen major shifts in thinking. I grew up in ND where my ancestor was Norwegian and German because Europeans settled there. In my hometown, in the late 70s, the college started to recruit football players from all over the country bringing in African Americans. I went to a College in MN that was Multi-Ethnic and most of my experiences were with Native Americans as we have this in our family. In the late 80s"s I chose to move to the border of this country where I continue to live. I have lived among Hispanic individuals for over 30 years and most of my friends are Hispanic. Almost all of my students were Hispanic. I have seen the people I loved go through racism when we left Texas for the southeast. What has bothered me was the racist remarks of the students I have taught over the years. I was taught not to say the "n" word but students will say it. It came about because of rap music. They do not know that they are not supposed to say it. It is in their music. The music tells them to hate white people Society tells them that white p people are racist people so they really believe that when they say racist things they cannot be racist because only white people can be racist not Hispanic or Black people. I heard this for years and years. When people started coming out that there was no such thing as reverse racism I begged to disagree. If you hate a group of people for who they are you are racist. If you put a group of people down eventually they will be on the bottom and you will be on the top. then there is no equality. I have had people not serve me in restaurants, not work with me in school, spread rumors that were lies because of my race, call me names, and I have had to close my mouth in large meetings when people were saying how racist white people are when teaching in ethnic school. Instead of looking at the incompetence of the teachers. I always wonder what Martin Luther King would have thought about the divide that Black Lives Matter creates between Races. He stood for peace and desired for the races to get along. When you look at a picture of a group is it supposed to be an image of all black, all white, all Asian, All Hispanic or is it supposed to be intermingled with us all. We cannot stand together when we tear one another down and I embrace my Caucasian ancestry as much as my friends embrace their Hispanic Heritage.

I worked in a very Black neighborhood and I am white. I can tell you racism is very much alive against whites as well. It should never be “us” and “them”. We are all in this together ❤

Members of my family Greek and Ghanaian are far darker than MM. Indeed I thought she was Latino or Italian origin . As for white balcony ,I'm sure balconies in Nigeria are quite black ! And as somebody who was NHS UK mental health professional in London before retiring to Bulgaria when I am now , who worked with every race under the sun , I can say how unracist ,with many many ,mixed race families , UK is , especially Big cities ,are . Sure work to be done but point made. And Black people or Brown ( cast system in India !) can be also racist. And in UK the most under priveleged group is of young working class white males . Let's not forget the genocide in Rwanda ( markle needed to be reminded and still ignored !), that was pretty racist and black on black!! As much slavery in Africa and modern slavery too . All this these mostly middle class in a bubble sick ideologues ,ignore. UK has full anti- discrimination laws covering every aspect of life ! And TV etc ,u might forget UK is a European state ! The UK is a 85% white country. That is not a crime. As with the extreme gender lunacy ,abuse of genuine racial discrimination , this will back fire and play in to right wing hands. Don't forget after Weimar Republic came Third Reich.! In passing in my last November UK visit while in London ,as a Greek orthodox Christian I attended the local newly opened Greek church in north London suburb. What struck me about the congregation was how many mixed race children ,mixed cypriot and white English and cypriot and west Indian and Indian there were. .

As a Brit and having followed the entirety of the Lucy Letby case (The Daily Mail have a very good podcast on here which discusses every day during the 9 month trial) I think this is a matter of many different things, which enabled this monster to do the horrendous things that she did, and now the police are investigating another possible 30 cases. The main factor in my opinion is the sheer incompetence of the managers within the Countess of Chester NHS trust, and the fact that they didn't want to sully the NHS's reputation or bring a negative light upon themselves. If they had acted when the numerous consultants and colleagues had originally approached them with their concerns, there would certainly be babies alive today, and I hope they live with that on their conscience for the rest of their lives. I also agree that in society when someone says 'Serial Killer' we automatically assume that that person is Male, as historically the vast majority of them have been, especially here in the UK. Plus factor in that she was a nurse specialising in the care of neonatal babies, and you automatically would think of that person being a kind, loving, caring person with a strong maternal/paternal being. I personally do not think that in this instance her race played any big factor in this catastrophic, negligent cock up from the management, if at all. This was the management trying to cover their backs and ignore the facts that they had the most prolific serial killer of babies in modern day history, working in their hospital. Thankfully as this has taken so long to come to its conclusion (so far anyway) it seems that these said people are no longer in those positions, However we aren't sure if they have been moved to other departments in yet another cover up. It's for the independent inquiry that the Government have ordered to seek out the answers to so many questions. As for the topic of racism towards white people. Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu, a longtime and very vocal supporter of Me-Gain, with a persistent need to point out white privilege at anything she can think of (even when no proof is there), also claimed that it was down to Letby's race for the reason why she was able to do what she did, (again no proof). Its so rife within the UK now, that it doesn't even cause an uproar anymore, as of course it's not seen as negative or damaging to say something to one person, when if it was turned around it would cause a massive uproar. Look at London Mayor Sadiq Khan, his 'team' (he is the boss, so has final say and is responsible) released a photograph on their official website of a white family of Mother, Father, Daughter and Son, with a label stating "doesn't represent real Londoners". Which not only is racist, but actually factually incorrect. London is our most diverse area within the UK, and 2023 stats show 'White British' at 36.8% and 'White Other' at 17%, to me that equals 53.8% which is more than HALF. Again this instance was brushed over with a halfarsed statement. Also the recent Womens World Cup, which Australia did an amazing job at hosting, on Sky News when reviewing the next days newspapers, the day before the final a newspaper had a photo of our Lionesses on, and a panelist said ' it isn't that diverse' and 'filled with blonde, blue eyed stars'. In the UK the national statistics show that 82% of the population are "White' where as the Lionesses worked out at 77%. To turn the argument around, if you look at our Athletics team, it is a predominantly a team made up of Black and people of colour/ different ethnicities, and not once has that been an issue. It's a team made up of our very best athletes just as it should be. A few years ago, I honestly thought that we had turned that corner, and that the communities and country I was living in was well onto the way of making vile racism a thing of the past, which it should be. In saying that I am not diminishing the hurt and pain many have experienced over the years, but I honestly thought lessons had been learnt and we were all moving forward as a collective society in trying to eradicate it, in the UK anyway. Sadly though its obviously not going to happen, it seems that in the last few years society has gone backwards massively, whether that be race, equality and now even womens rights. X

The problem is that Lucy Letby was a smart and capable nurse. It is possible that her detractors were hesitant because of the ethnicity but I think her work record and the nursing shortage also played a role. She was a good nurse. She was also a serial killer.

AWESOME video. You have really done a lot of research into this subject. I did find that statement about the Royal Family being, referred to as too white, or whatever the woman said, was the start of something that we really don't want to see. When will people stop seeing others as 'enemies' because of their skin?? It Is laughable when you see it as a 'fault' that relative turn out the same shade of skin as yourself!!???!!?? What do you do?. Return them???

I’m a 57 year old white male that lives in the UK. I have been victim in the past of racism, female abuse and political correctness. Back in 1997 I was told that I could not have my dream as a London Firefighter because I was white. Due to government guidelines the London Fire Brigade was forced to employ out 10, one female, one black colour and one Asian. I was told be the interviewer I was in the top ten. Ten years later I was physically and emotionally abused by my wife, to the point I attempted suicide. With confessing to my friends and with their support I left here only for the courts to grant my ex full custody of our children. Of course I had trouble seeing them as she played every game in the book to do so. Three years after my breakup I had a new relationship. However, after a couple of months I called it off as I had suspicions that she was not the full ticket. Well, what I had to experience over the next three months was a nightmare. Harassment and intimidation, which I had no choice but to go to the police. They just laughed at me. It was only that evening when the police turned up at my house really concerned and said you not to leave town that I know this has got really serious. So my conclusion is: I have no sympathy for anybody that cries because of their colour, religion or sex. Deal with it, stop bloody complaining and get on with your life. Because no one gives a flying flamingo about the hardship what we ALL have to deal with. Be positive and true to yourself and good things WILL happen. Jason ❤

I do think that there is still a societal expectation for women to be nurturers, but that applies to women of all colours, races and creeds. Bringing race into this particular case is to create a further distraction. The real questions should be aimed elsehwhere. The general suspicion seems to be that certain people (allegedly) were protecting their own interests in chosing to back Letby against other medical and nursing staffs' complaints about her.. If that was the case they would have backed the nurse had she been a woman of colour, or even a male nurse.

You are correct in that our response to your query 'is a person more likely to be considered guilty based on colour'. Ever since someone who I knew well, a middle aged man with the sweetest wife and kids and who had a responsible position working with children was arrested and convicted of sex crimes. I no longer know how to assess a person. A person's colour, age, sex, occupation is immaterial. I now believe anyone has the potential for great good deeds or vile acts of depravity.

In my opinion people, like Lucy Letby, get away with their crimes because they project a veneer of loving, caring, respectability. I do agree that parts of society still see women, generally, as 'Ministering Angels' who could never commit heinous crimes; a Narcissist, such as L.L., knows how to manipulate the people around them and how to play on the "meek' female image. I could be wrong, I do live in Britain, but I think L.L. could have had any colour skin and she would have still been seen as a 'good, kind, hard-working' person and innocent of all charges, purely because that was how she was able to portray herself.

Thank you for your honesty in the matter. You are spot on and reluctantly I too have been in the receiving end of racism many years ago. Men, women, black, white, brown, yellow no matter are all sinful at heart from birth. It is up to each individual to accept the fact that we are all imperfect humans and should make choices that encourage and uplift each other not destroy one another. Have a wonderful and blessed day everyone!

I worked as a carer in the UK and one patient asked me if I live above a Chinese shop. I just told him matter of factly that I wasn’t Chinese, I was Filipino. He didn’t say further and I didn’t because I was there to do a job. This racism issue becomes a problem if you take any one’s words personally. Even outside work one can be professional.

That routine done at Target looked more like some kind of Zombie Parade than a dance. People are absolutely crazy. I am so happy to see you discussing the issue of racism in the black community against Caucasians (and other ethnicities). That is an issue that is rarely discussed and it needs to be. Sick of hearing I have “white privilege” when my family came to the USA from dirt poor areas of Europe, and worked in coal mines and cigar factories here in the USA to achieve the American Dream through hard work and education. Anyway, the nonsense about the theory that black people cannot be racist stems from Critical Race Theory which tells us that blacks cannot be racist against whites because we are their oppressors is ridiculous IMO. That theory, once a topic in College level courses has grown tentacles that are ripping people apart.

You don't have to have "the talk" with your male children about the police. You have more access to health care for your children as Planned Parenthood has been closed from the areas that took care of women for affordable birth control, ante-natal care, cancer screens, pap smears, and mammograms. And you don't have to stand in line for 12 hours to vote in the largest black community in Fulton Co. Georgia.
