The lyrics are so intense.... 'Once I rose above the noise and confusion Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion I was soaring ever higher But I flew too high Though my eyes could see, I still was a blind man Though my mind could think, I still was a mad man I hear the voices when I'm dreaming I can hear them say' ..... When Kansas was in the recording session for this album, it was the night before their last day to close it out and I don't know if Kerry had this melody come to him or the lyric, the dude was VERY prolific as a writer of both lyric and melody. But it came to him so he wrote the lyrics down that night along with the basic melody for this. He came in almost bashful about it saying he had an idea for one more song. This is the last day of the session. They worked this out that same day. The musicianship of this is amazing, vocals outstanding, guitar, drums and keyboard work all works of art. You listen to any element of this song, any piece of it and it's excellent. They recorded it that evening and that was a wrap. This song made them, and it happened in the last day of the session for this album, from Kerry's thoughts the night before.

I have loved this song send High School what's in the round 1978. Is is 2020 + I still love this song. Once I hear the beginning of the song I immediately feel better then what I felt before. And I could be feeling happy and this song comes on and I'm happier. Also Carry On Wayward Son is The Unofficial theme song to The TV series Supernatural. Supernatural is ending after 15 season. That's over 300 episodes. The 200 episode titled fanfiction they sing carry on my wayward son as a Ballard and it is absolutely beautiful.

A friend of mine was their tour manager, for many years. Back in the 90’s, he invited me and a couple of our other friends to one of the band’s concerts. We were given full access, and had the joy of actually meeting and talking with the band. Believe me when I tell you that they were the most genuine, humble, and kind people you could ever hope to meet. Being a fan, since I was a boy, in the 70’s, and then meeting them, only to realize what truly great guys they were, really reinforced my love for this legendary band.

@@taniele84 Hi, this song came out in 1978. They were still putting 8 track players in cars although cassettes were more popular by then. Internet did not exist so there was no Sirius, Pandora or You Tube. The number 1 way to listen to music was radio. As a 22 y/o dude in '78 I listened to a couple of the local FM rock stations. When Dust In The Wind came out it fit into multiple categories and was played on multiple stations and played and played and played some more. DITW is a very good song and I know that people love it. I'm a pretty big Kansas fan but prefer the long epic proggy tunes more. Those were not radio friendly in '78. Sorry for the rambling.

Great video, I'm glad you guys seem to love this song as much as I do. This was the main song I wanted you guys to get to for classic rock week but I've seen some other people mention "Chicago - 25 Or 6 To 4" and "Deep Purple - Burn" so I just wanted to say those songs would be great for classic rock week as well. And of course I'm going to leave my main suggestion for when you guys do metal again. "Cult Of Luna - Nightwalkers" is probably going to be instant playlist material for you guys.

As a Supernatural fan I really get emotional hearing this song. The show is on the last season and normally is played as the opener for the season finale. Which means, the next time I'm going to hear it in the show is going to be the final episode. Yeah, it's great song, although I think the changes in tempo occur a bit too frequently but that's criticism on a very high level. It's a near-perfect song. And Steve Walsh's clean and clear vocals are just incredible. You hear him sing Carry On My Wayward son without any instrument and the song immediately comes alive in your head. It's catchy, it's funky, it grooves, it's emotional, it give you everything you'd want in a classic rock song.

Man, love how you guys have an authentic response to great music! I've been a Kansas fan since 1976 (the year Leftoverture was released). Their music doesn't age, it's SO timeless. True musicians and artists. This was my first time seeing one of your music review videos and I must say, I'll be back for more.

I almost envy you guys for being able to REALLY listen to songs like this for the first time. Keep up the good work and give Savatage a listen, Hall of the Mountain King.

This song was written in one night. Even though they have been a band for quite a while when this song was made, it was actually their first hit record that took them to stardom.

Kansas definitely has other songs that are a lot more “prog” than this one! This is a classic though. Great song.

Some Thoughts -I agree, Song for America, anyone? But, don’t you agree Kansas is more of a blues ock band with long songs than a prog band? Kansas is so heavily influenced by melody and the blues end of rock that I have never really thought of them in the same place musically as King Crimson, Yes, early Genesis, Marillion, or even Rush.

I have heard people compare Symphony X with Kansas and from a point of view I understand them. There is these time signatures going on and some of the keyboard sounds are a bit similar eh?

Now, yes, I would agree, but in ‘76 this was very progressive. Nobody was doing what they were doing.

These guys jam so damn hard in this song. One of the most banging songs I've ever heard and I listen to metal alot. Gives me goosebumps just from the instruments.
