The guitar part was Kerry Livgrens fingerpicking practice piece. His wife said he oughta make a song out of it. He said nah, but she kept bugging him till he did it to stop the harrassment. From finger exercise to one of the great iconic songs in music history.

The main difference between AC/DC and Kansas is that, and I’m not shitting on Angus or the band here, but AC/DC songs all have a VERY similar tone and vibe to them. Across all of their albums I’ve ever listened to, they’ve pretty much stuck to one formula. It works for them, they’re a great band, but it leads to the fatigue you are talking about. @@voodoobill Lol yeah, Angus has a great sense of humor and self awareness. They’re a great band and know who their audience is and what their sound is. They stick to it and it works for them, which is great. It just doesn’t work with every band. ACDCs music is sort of timeless, in a way. Like if Metallica were still doing exact replicas of Ride The Lightning, MoP or Justice, it would have become really boring by now. I’m one of the vocal minorities who loved the Load era, well Load and a few songs off Re-Load. St. Anger is the only misfire for me and that’s mainly due to production value, that damn trash can snare and seemingly trying too hard to swoop in on the “Nu Metal” popularity by essentially having almost no solos on the album, which…meh. It’s their weakest album and the only one I just can’t listen to.

Your reaction to this song, one I've known since I was on the streets as a juvenile sh!thead, and understood with absolute clarity, is pretty much on point. At 14, surviving on the streets, with violence an every day part of my world, this tune showed the double-edged sword of existence, and in the grand scheme of things, how trivial it all was. No I think it's really just as simple as once you've heard a song every week for literally dozens of years, you start to get sick of it, no matter how good. That's why I find myself gravitating to the lesser cuts from bands because I'm such a music nut. Like I acknowledge all the "big" songs from bands, but I tend to say things that are like "3rd on the totem pole" for lack of a better term are the songs that I gravitate toward. Like AC/DC for example, my favorite song is For Those About to Rock, because you don't hear it NEARLY as much as the Shook Me or Thunderstruck or Highway to Hell's of the world. Don't get me wrong, those are CLASSIC and KILLER songs, but I'm just over it. But you catch me in the right mood half-cut at a bar and a good bar-band comes out with Highway to Hell I'm gonna be out on the floor doing the duck-walk lol. So take from that what you will.

Ahhh, memories! Love this tune. And this band. Couple of my friends and I sang this in high school @ our variety show. Got a standing ovation! Lol

All right guys I see what you’re saying about the negativity part. However, I don’t see it that way. I look at it as in focusing on the good things. Deal with things just for today. We don’t know what the future holds for us to do what we need to do today. I look at it as the glass half full and not the glass half empty. But I love y’all’s reaction.

I do too. I do not see the song as a negative.

Always felt like you both said, the song about how reality is humbling. More to make us reflect on where we've been, appreciate what we've got now & not grasp what we Don't have. Well said. That's why songs like this are worthwhile.

Although a hit for Kansas, it is not representative of their progressive rock catalog. Next song check out "Miracles Out of Nowhere" is a classic Kansas song and more representative of their prog-rock credentials.

More "Kansas" suggestions: "The Wall", "Song For America", "Child of Innocence", "Icarus (Borne On Wings of Steel)", and "Crossfire". 🔥🔥🔥

It's a beautiful and haunting reality check and reminder for all of us how brief life is, and to remember what is truly important, because all your money WON'T another minute buy.

I was in 10th grade when this song came out. And the student teacher in our English class used this song's chorus as an example of how metaphors convey meaning. First he wrote on the chalk board "We are nothing, life is meaningless." Then below that he wrote "Dust in the Wind, all we are is dust in the wind." But this song is not saying that life is meaningless. It is, as you discussed in your reaction, about putting our lives into perspective. And the lyrics, by the way, are based on passages from The Book of Ecclesiastes.

Hey guys great reaction. Weekly Jeff Buckley reaction request. He was a singer/songwriter from the early 90’s who unfortunately passed away after recording a single perfect record. His story is tragic but his songs are transcendent. He could rock the fuck out like Hendrix but then cover a song like hallelujah and slay that too. Not to mention he was doing something nobody else was in the 90’s at that time. My song recs are: Lover, you should have come over. Grace. Dream Brother, or Eternal Life. Thanks!

Wow. I can't believe they haven't done buckley. It really is just shocking how many things seem so profound but then you find out someone else never felt it and it's just a strange feeling. They haven't ever heard him. What a strange concept.

This was a practice riff that Kerry Livgren used to warm up and practice his finger picking. He was always the one who came up with the riffs that would become hits.
