Lot 906: 1910 Hupfeld Super Pan Orchestra

Orchestra has the most sophisticated musical capabilities ever created by Ludwig Hupfeld A.G. of Leipzig, Germany. It was stated in Hupfeld advertising of the day that the instrument was a Pan Orchestra, not Orchestrion, suggested that it was even more human-like in its music than were instruments in the popular Hupfeld Helios line. Instrumentation included the high grade Ronisch reproducing piano with mandolin attachment, 338 pipes and reeds representing violin, flute, clarinet, oboe, lotus flute, cello, harmonium, xylophone, bells and extensive drums and traps. All
controlled by 21 automatic registers, three separate internal swell boxes for melody, countermelody and accompaniment, plus a main outer swell shutter to give ultimate control of the sound from vanish (very soft) to forte (very loud). The roll changer player mechanism is the most sophisticated of any extant Orchestrion style, with the ability to play several musical parts on many combinations of instruments at the same time, each with its own expression. This example has an exceptional fancy case similar in appearance to the largest known Helios Style III/39. The art glass window and cabinet were obtained by Hathaway & Bowers in Europe and missing cabinet parts were replicated down to the last detail from the only complete “Super Pan” in existence, being restored at the same time for the Q. David Bowers Collection. It was the centerpiece of the Dr. George Coade Collection of California for many years, later it was sold to the Wilkinson Collection, and then spent many years in the Sanfilippo’s Collection in Chicago. It was acquired in 1999 by the Milhous Collection, and finally went to its present owners: the Andrews Collection
of Texas. Additional restoration work was done on the pneumatic components, and a rank of clarinet pipes was added by noted automatic musical instrument expert Arthur Reblitz and his staff. The Reblitz team understands every detail of the intricate Pan Orchestra having restored three of the four known examples. The Pan plays highly-multiplexed 124 note Hupfeld Pan rolls, several dozen original rolls and a set of over 400 re-cuts allow the selection of popular to classical music and are included with this magnificent instrument. Mr. Reblitz states that: “Only three
other examples of the Hupfeld Pan Orchestras are known to have survived, a Model I, Model II, and a Model IV Excelsior Pan in the Nethercutt Foundation Collection in California. Each is a treasured part of permanent collections, and each takes its place among the world’s most valuable Orchestrions.
