I don't believe Aragorn's destiny is fate. Aragorn is a truly chivalrous man (look at C.S. Lewis ' The necessity of Chivalry') and his actions where only a product of his own free will. Aragorn had every chance to turn back. We see the challenge of his free will in the 'Fellowship of the Ring' where he is truly tempted to take the ring from Frodo, however, against all temptation he chose to resist. This is what made Aragorn a greater man than Boromir. Aragorn also made the choice not to believe in fate (which was to be the same fate as Isildur) and created his own path to becoming King. Tolkien being a Catholic would definitely define Aragorn's actions as a product of free will and not fate.
@ohifonlyx332 жыл бұрын
You might say his own free will guided by his honor. Faith. Courage, etc... all determined his fate in a way...
@Spur-li7ec Жыл бұрын
Fate is Gods will, and he has his free will to either live up to it with strength or to deny it and fall. Before, it was Isildurs fate to destroy the ring but he failed.

Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers, I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields, when the age of men comes crashing down, but it is not this day! This day we fight!! By all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you stand, Men of the West!!!

Its interesting to look at Aragorn's view of his mother, and how that has parallels with Tolkien's view of his mother. She was cut off by her family when she converted to Catholicism, and Tolkien came to see her as a Catholic Martyr. In the same way, Gilraen gave her life to give hope the world. What he saw as her dedication for her children can be seen in Aragorn's eventiual commitment to take the crown, despite his initiail hesitance.

Elrond accuses men of being weak, because isildur couldn't destroy the RING - however, neither the elf queen, Galadriel, nor the powerful wizard, Gandalf, dare to even touch the RING for fear of falling into it's spell. So maybe elfs are as weak as men, when it comes down to it.......? Only the small hobbits are fairly resistent to that spell - though not completely, as we see. And in the end the story repeats itself with Frodo in King Isildur's place and Sam in Lord Elrond's. It would have ended the same way this time - and worse even - because Sauron would have taken his ring back, had it not been for Gollum, who attacked Frodo, reconqured the RING, and accidently fell into the fire destroying it and himself . Which is why Frodo says this to Sam, as they wate for death on the rock outside Mount Doom: "Had it not been for Gollum, I would not have been able to destroy it. So let's forgive him." I wish Peter Jackson would have kept that line in the film - but he left it out.

Am I the only one that gets an Arthurian feel from Aragorn's story? While Rings of Power may be massively divisive, due to various reasons, it is an alright telling of Galadriel's past. The only reason its drastically different from the Silmarillian is because they were contracted to only use the appendices from the Lord of the Rings. Hence why its called Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power. It was originally going to be a story focused on a younger Aragorn and Tauriel was even supposed to be in it. Unfortunately, it is evident that those bits of info were either misdirections or they had changed their minds and decided to make the show unconnected to any pre-established Middle-Earth content. I would like to see a tv show or set of movies focused on Aragorn's days as a Dunedain ranger prior to the events of Fellowship of the Ring. Maybe even some games using aspects of the Middle-Earth: shadow of games to make it. The archery should, of course, be based on the archery in the tomb raider reboot/prequel trilogy. If it ends up a series of games, i hope the get Viggo Mortensen to reprise his character of Aragorn. He's the only Aragorn I want to hear/see.
