Having taught horsemanship, from basic get-on-the-horse and hacking, all the way to arena jumping (I hated dressage even as a kid!), you get through it by remembering you were there once, too. I had coaches until the auto hit me in my early 30s, and they all put up with my likely hamhandedness as I continued to learn and improve (my trainer during my undergrad college had the literal patience of a saint!). If I was still able to ride, I'd probably still be learning even as a great-grandfather, even as I'm passing what I have learned to a granddaughter-in-law and great-grandsons, so patience continues.

As I watched this video series unfold, I felt increasing frustration & disappointment over Apollo’s situation. He was ready and eager to go! I was really looking forward to him stretching his legs and feeling a healthy release of endorphins cantering across the fields. The way the slow group was managed ended up “ boxing in Apollo’s opportunity to enjoy himself.” I hope he gets another fun ride soon with more experienced riders and mounts.

I don’t understand what they were trying to do? Walking and trotting (didn’t see much trotting) to calm them down and then when they were calm they could then canter? Surely holding the horses back would do nothing to calm them as they are just frustrating the horses . I think I would have turned round and had a nice canter home!
@elisechase9792 жыл бұрын
I agree. And besides it's so important to let them canter! It does free up their minds and it's a good chance to burn some energy. It's a shame. I would love having routes like that here in Germany where I live!

Hi Tara and Rens, Wow - looks almost like the woman taking this group out is a novice with only walking being done - that beautiful open area with jumps, all of you should have been able to trot and / or canter and she is still walking ? ? I don 't understand her, even after she confirmed with the entire group a trot was going to start, all she did was more walking ! In your fast groups you usually do, I don't recall the group leader ever calling everyone around and asking if a trot was OK ! My comment yesterday, that the sign up sheet should have an area asking if rider and/or horse is a novice and be posted so each rider could choose what group, fast or slow fit them the best -- THE WAY THIS GROUP LEADER IS ONLY WALKING AND BRINGING THE WHOLE GROUP TOGETHER TO ASK IF A TROT IS O.K. MAKES ME BELIEVE SHE KNEW AT THE START THIS WAS A BEGINNERS CLASS NOT A SLOW RIDE SITUATION ! It is a shame with Apollo and you thinking slow trip had a completely different meaning - he really wants to run when you reached the big open field toward end of video -- he was enthusiastically eyeing the jumps you were walking next to ! I sure hope they eventually let you open up and canter ! I was also surprised the leader had led you in a circle when you were already back at the vehicles at start of video ! I'll bet the course is much larger for the fast group ! ! Tara, have you ridden with this outing company doing this event before ? Interest is peaked to see if the leader gets brave enough to get out of the walking gait ! As a rider, are you allowed to go to the leader and ask if she will allow something more than walking ? Take Care. God Bless, Susan

Did I actually hear someone ask if Apollo was a KICKER? Mr. Politeness and Good Behavior?!! Tara, you were right about the piebald - note the ears going back towards Apollo and other horses coming up from behind, and the setting of the hindquarters synchronized with the ears. If not an active kicker, it was at least very sensitive to overtaking horses. And you definitely in the WRONG GROUP! Not because they were novices, but they did not show any inclination to challenge themselves or their companions. And some of the conversation bits sounded downright catty.... And my sympathy to Apollo, I could feel his frustration everytime he saw a rail, and even more frustration with the slowpokes in front of him!
