I remember seeing Alco Century series engines roll past my hometown on the former BC Rail back when they were well maintained and running clean. Their horns are the sound of my childhood.

BACK THEN, THE RAILROADS TOOK CARE OF THEIR LOCOMOTIVES!TODAY, THEY COULD CARE LESS ABOUT TAKING CARE OR THEM! AS LONG AS THEY ARE MAKING MONEY FOR THE RAILROADS, THIS IS ALL THE RAILROADS CARE ABOUT!THEY WORK THE LOCOMOTIVES HARD ,WITHOUT ANY MAINTENANCE AND CARE.HENCE THE BLACK SMOKE COMING FROM THEM!THIS SHOULD BE UNACCEPTABLE TO THE PEOPLE WHO LLIVE AND BREATHE IN THEIR SMOKE! LOCOMOTIVE MAINTENANCE SHOULS BE A PRIORITY FOR THE RAILROADS TO KEEP THE EQUIPMENT PROPERLY MAINTAINED.ABD IF THEY DONT, THEN THERE SHOULD BE SEVERE PENALTIES IMPOSED ON THEM WHEN THEY FAIL TO GIVE THE LOCOMOTIVES THE RIGHT MAINTENANCE THEY NEED! THERE'S NO REASON OR EXCUSE FOR ANY OF THESE LOCOMOTIVES TO SUFFER LIKE THIS! THE RAILROADS MUST GO BACK TO GIVING THEM THE PROPER MAINTENANCE AND KEEPING THEM CLEAN,AS WELL AS CHANGING THEIR AIR FILTERS AND KEEPING THEM TUNED UP! NO EXCUSES!

Actually all that black smoke is just airborne carbon particles ("soot")--harmless, except on toast. It's due to an overly rich fuel-air mixture entering the cylinders before the turbo gets a chance to spool up and deliver the proper amt of air ("turbo lag"). Alco used Woodward Governor fuel controls--who also supplied fuel governors to early jet engines, though not the same kind!.
@dennisyoung46312 жыл бұрын

Interesting info, but only small correction what about the soot - as long as I know, soot as itself actually is relatively harmless, but toxic and carcinogenetic substances produced during incomplete burning of diesel (f. e. aromatic hydrocarbons like benzoapyrene, benzene...) are caught on soot.

Locomotive just beneath overpass belched out a plume of black exhaust all over the guy's self-described brand new, $300., impossibly WHITE, white skinny jeans. That Conrail GE towards the beginning just had a flat out blown turbo
@Henry56235 жыл бұрын
Honestly I would just about bet money it didn't have a blown turbo but rather either a injector that was trying to stick or some oil that was getting past some piston rings and ultimately getting blown out into the exhaust manifold where it was igniting. I've seen U-boats do the same thing for the same reasons. I could argue that it could be some aging wearing valves allowing oil/unburnt diesel to make it's way into the manifold which would cause the same reaction. That said if a turbo is blown it'd be belching out thick black smoke/flames pretty much continuously. Not spitting out smoke/flames kind of intermittently like that ex Conrail C40-8W was doing.

Before steam was abandoned, its efficiency had been improved to equal and in some cases exceed that of diesel. Steam was abandoned because it requires more maintenance than diesel. The problem occurs when the "modern" diesels are not maintained correctly. Some people claim that steam is dirtier than diesel, but just like other sources of power, fuel for steam can be a lot cleaner than coal. LNG , propane, or even hydrogen occurs to me. I suppose those sources of power could be used on diesel, too. But fuels that are gases at room temperature become pretty difficult to use for internal combustion engines. Such fuels used for steam would eliminate a lot of the routine maintenance needed and go a ways to eliminating prejudice about the dirty pollution it produces.
