You get the full amount only if you take payments over 25 years. If you want to take a lump sum, you get about half. And depending on the state you live in, you have to pay tax, which could be as high as 50% depending on the amount you have won.

When you taker the lump sum your winnings are reduced/ The lump sum is only 61% of the advertised price. So from the 8.2 million was reduced by 39% to roughly 5 million. Taxes further reduced the amount to 2.3 million

I remember one morning my fiancé burst in and woke me up saying his 90 year old grandmother had gotten a letter from publishers clearing house and she had won like 2 million dollars she just needed to call a number. I was like are you stupid??? If she actually won pch they show up on your doorstep!! Of course they called the number not believing me and as soon as a foreigner answered they hung up. I told her block the number, don't answer the phone for random numbers. I knew immediately it was a scam. They wanted so bad to believe it was real. Pretty sure the letter had a check on it they wanted her to deposit or something. I don't remember but I was baffled 🤦

Then 17m was left, which hr got paid and taxed on, That came to the amount he got after all that! I feel prople should to be taught how this works. Of ourse, I'm not speaking for all lottery organisations! In some instances, any money you get outside your regular income is considered supplementary income. We all know that supplementary income is taxed at a higher tax rate! That's why when you make $200 a day at work, but when you work overtime you find you made like $30 that day.
