The body finish on that Elan is quite wonderful. (I was around when the Elans were launched and my older cousin Robert actually had one at the time). I can tell you now that the finish you achieved on that car was MUCH better than on the cars when new. Well done sir! 👍🇬🇧

Good to see the guns you use. Still have my Devilbiss JGA gun which painted every classic I did over 30 years, bet with a rebuild kit it would still be good.

Amazing paint finish. Enormous amount of work done in preparation. Will be one of the best examples in the world, and rightly so.

Another good and interesting video for 2 reasons in my case. The restoration project I have been working on for the last 7 years is the very car you are leaning on, a BMW 840Ci in Barbados Green! I have to say it looks distinctly better than mine owing to the fact it is more or less in one piece!

The most nerve-racking part of the project is coming with assembly of a perfectly finished body to everything else. I like the Elan, but the first Elite has a spot in my heart. I guess I'm not a "pop-up" headlight fan.

Interesting to add a polyester filler coat on to the epoxy as historically polyester does not like to bond to epoxy. Looks fantatic finish anyhow.

Great vid of the work involved. With a steel shell though, would you rather blasting or dipping? I’m doing my old Suzuki Jeep and can’t decide. I like the Raptor idea as well, I have put it on my trailers and it is great.
@K2edg6 ай бұрын
Did you test fit the doors etc onto the shell? when i stripped mine i noted a fair bit of filler from factory around the bottom of the A pillar on both doors and when i test fitted them they fit like a glove on my foot. I didn't end up having to cut the doors to get them to fit but they took a LOT of work.

Technical question: With a regular steel body, what might be the typical final thickness range of the paint after the epoxy and finishing primers, base coat etc. Thanks

How would you have stripped the original paint if you had to do it?

A lot of Lotus cars back then WERE home built in a garage !
@philtucker12246 ай бұрын
Very true. I remember the deal with new-car-home-assembly I think that receiving the new car in pieces exempted the buyer from paying the purchase tax?(or similar)…
@K2edg6 ай бұрын
Not exactly.......... The Lotus elan 'Kit' was just fully assembled car with no wheels or engine fitted. It was done to get round the new car tax. It was by no means what you would consider a 'Kit car' today.
@philtucker12246 ай бұрын
@@K2edg correct! Actually I can’t think of a current model that takes advantage of that old tax deal, ( actually I’m not sure it still exists?) 🤔

Mint job, would look amazing with a flow coat but more work and money also can't express how good Novol products are but expensive ie the CSR clear . 👍

Using the dense bed liner inside the cabin, do you expect melting issues in high temperature direct sun-parked conditions or smelliness when very hot?
