I often will use a single active speaker when doing ceremonies. Would I be able to combine both left and right signals from the mixer using a xlr Y cable like he mentioned?
@jouebien
@jouebien 10 жыл бұрын
Going with a slight different concept mentioned in the video but it my give you a different solution for the same problem: 99% of device you will plug into a mixer; as an input, will be mono ( most mikes, instruments ect). If you have a Stereo device ( ie Laptop) input you can drop it to mono; before sound is processed by your mixer, in software on a computer or with a Stereo to Mono cable. This will make both the left and right master channel be mirrors if each other (mono out put- left and right are exactly the same). OR Yes, however not all Y cables are wired up the same internally so be aware of that (different wiring for different applications). You may also want to back off the Gain a little as you will be sending twice as much to the speaker as normal.

From my experience using more speakers at a lower volume is allot better sound than trying to blast a system that is to small for the environment ,, What about sound for live bands?? Our band plays in small bars ( about 50 people ) and large outdoor events ( with over 200 people) I have found that a passive system gives me more flexibility to adjust to the size of the show, indoor and outdoor shows are also very different when it comes to sound, Our most common speaker setup for most shows is Two active 18 inch subs , Two passive 15" loud speakers , and Two passive 12 inch loud speakers , for large outdoor shows I double it , 4 speakers of each size listed above. Our smallest show was only Two 12 inch Passive loud speakers and a Active 18 inch sub,,, Adjust to your environment, Good sound makes a good show.

No. More speakers means more interference and results in degradation of your sound. You use more speakers splayed away from each other for wider coverage, but for an increase in overall sound level output you need either speakers which are louder or which are designed to array coherently. You can't just double up on consumer level gear like you're using and get more sound over a the given area.

Hi PSSL, I need your suggestions, I wrongly connected the polarity of the cable from my Spendor S3/5R2 speakers to my vintage Sansui stereo amplifier as follows: As wrongly the 2 Negatives of the 2 speakers were connected to the one channel of the amplifier and the 2 Positives of the 2 speakers were connected to the another channel of the amplifier. One speaker was working and another speaker was not working. I was confused and didn't notice about the wrong polarity for about 15 minutes, then I checked the cable connections and detected the wrong thing. I became panic and sweated like anything. After I made the correct connection the two speakers sing as usual. But.. even though the speakers are now working, still I have some fear. By the wrong connection: Would the cross-overs of the speakers become weak? Did I do the great mistake? How will be the life and health of the speakers? May I keep the speakers for long time?. If it would become weak, that would how much? Kindly let me know about in detail. I am much worried about the thing. If I hear from you as: 'Need not be worried and the things are fine' , then I will be jumping with my transplanted knees! I very much love these small beauties. But, now I am sleepless. Thank you, Regards, Suseendran.

The knobs on a poweramp ARE effectively volume knobs ..but obviously need a signal to amplify. With a typical mixer there are 3 volume controls in each line.... individual line volume /master mixer volume / poweramp attenuators( volume knob). Active speakers require MORE cables going to them .. Power + Signal, and therefore are far more difficult to position safely. The amp does not "send" an ohm rating to a speaker , the speaker PRESENTS a ohm LOAD to the amp.... the higher the load the lower the ohmage rating ( ie 1 x 8 ohm speaker presents an 8 ohm load ... 2 x 8ohm speakers present a 4ohm load )

your amp should have twice as much power than your speaker rating. so 400w per channel at 4ohms in your case.

The power or wattage is what the loud speaker will be able to run a long time at without damaging the drivers inside. It is not the power output of the speaker. You need the SPL/1W 1M figure really. (sound pressure level at 1 watt at 1 meter) example A 100watt speaker rated at 103 db(decibels) will be noticeably louder at the same 100watt going into a speaker rated at 100db. Higher efficency (Decibels)db rating means you effectivley need less power in(watts)

Thanks, Mike! I stumbled upon this while researching lightweight portable PA systems but I've been lugging around a pro sized system from back in the day of my 400 seat Concert Club. I had no idea what I had (it was put together a piece at a time by my sound/music/light guys back then). There are several super powerful amps; a rack system with all sorts of goodies; some tw0-way marauders, 4 18 inch subs; 25, 50 and 100 foot snakes; phantom boxes; mics and etc. Now I can actually take a look at the stuff and maybe start to figure out how to hook it up and get it running again!

@russmaleartist

Too simplistic . . . active speakers can also have the individual drivers controlled directly by the speakers with no passive crossover, by using an electronic crossover before the amplifiers with individual bands of frequencies being chosen and controlled before the amps, thus confining each amps response to the tweeters, mids, and bass rather than having the full amplified frequencies being split right before the speakers. More control can be administered and better sound quality due to the natural distortions of the music by the capacitors, chokes, and resisters used to do that part of the reproduction. To me, the built-in amplification limits the power source used to the manufacturer's choices and tastes, whereas with an open type active system, components can be chosen by the listener to suit their individual tastes. The flexibility of what type of active crossover one chooses coupled with the amplifiers and drives used means a closer response and a tweaking factor that becomes the OWNER'S PERROGATIVE rather than the manufactuer's inflexibility.

I was wondering if I could get an answer to a question I have on my P A System. I have a powered mixer that is rate as follows- 4000 Watts Peak / 2000 Watts Program / 1000 Watts RMS / 2 x 500 Watts RMS each channel In the speaker output area at the back it has 4 ohms - 16 ohms, 4 inputs (2- ¼ inch jacks and two other) I am currently running two Yamaha S115 speakers (Nominal impedance, 8 ohms parallel input, 500 watts program, 1000 watts maximum on this powered mixer. Is it possible for me to add two other 500 watts program speaker, either by running them off my current speakers or by running separate wires from the power mixer directly to the new speakers. If this is possible, would it increase my volume and give me more watts, or would it damage my system. I would certainly appreciate any help I could get on this matter. Thanks Martin
@alexstevensen4292
@alexstevensen4292 6 жыл бұрын
That should work fine seems the amp can handle 4ohms and you get a lot more output from that extra speaker. Seperate wires not needed just wire them 'locally'. The power rating on a speaker is really not that important. You just don't want to go much below 3 ohms when loading the amp. With speakers there are two problems, thermal overload and bottoming out on low base. With thermal overload it's a little bit complicated one might think that reducing the low bass reduces the power to the speaker it does but it also deprives the speaker of large movement and thus air cooling. Plus in the bass area there's a huge impedance hump which means the speaker draws less power in that area. You also get higher efficiency when stacking speakers so twice the amount of speakers gives 6db more output whilst drawing 3db more power especially in the bass area. For the highs it doesn't work like that. On the contary you might get 'strange interference patterns' when stacking tweeters. Although when you stack them vertically that should not be a problem. But you get all kind of 'dispersal patterns' when combining tweeters not recommended. Although when they are close together vertically then that narrows the vertical beam width which reduces floor and ceiling relfections which might be an improvement. The question is what appears to be the current problem with speaker output? not enough bass, speaker bottoming out? schreeching highs? does the amp start to distort? if the amp starts to distort and it can handle 4 ohms then adding an extra cabinet certainly helps.

Hey tell me if I got this right. So the higher the resistance, say 8 ohms speaker, is electrically better than say a 3 ohms speaker? So an amp that can handle as low as 3 ohms would not have problem dealing with an 8 ohms speaker or vice-versa? Coz I have a stereo amp than originally came with surround speakers rated at 3 ohms each but I wanted to use my bose 901 floor speakers for the L&R and sub and with amp recommendation rating of 4-8 ohms per channel. Will that be ok? Thanks.

Good explanations! Question - If a system has 2 passive subs, 4 active speakers. Obviously the subs will need an amp... however Is it necessary to run the speakers through and amp? Or will that not work bc it's already powered.
@Djtonydraper
@Djtonydraper 9 жыл бұрын
Heavens no.. Never run a powered (active) speaker into a power amp. That's a huge No No. Power + Power = Ká--boom. :(( You will destroy your active powered speakers plugging them into an external amp. Only passive speakers to external power amps. Active speakers already have an amp so there's no need..

Thanks for your question! We’d be happy to talk through this with you if you are able to give our Product Specialists a call at 1-800-268-5520 so we can understand more about your needs. Generally speaking, all brands are good; we might just recommend different products based on specific things like the level of overall output you’re aiming for, what equipment you are using alongside, and what style of music you are most interested in using them for. Bose set-up’s are very popular for karaoke, and there are many other manufacturers that make very easy-to-use solutions for this purpose. Hope to speak with you soon!
