It's easy enough, G is fan, Y is air conditioner condenser, W. is heat, RH is usually hot red wire for heat, and RC is usually red hot wire for air conditioning

So by your own admission, R is the feed. Not the return, as stated in the video. You can't supply 24v and return it with the same wire. The red supplies 24v the g,w,y return that supply(if the thermostat calls for it) and then deliver it to the fan, heat, a/c. The C is a common. Meaning common to ground. So between r and C you'll have 24v. That is where your thermostat takes power from to operate. Or it uses batteries or both.

Keep in mind. If u just have heat. U can easily twist any 2 wires together until the heat goes on forget about the tests a for now, because that's all the dam thing does anyway, so lets figure what 2 wires fire the furnace, then ill figure out where they go

Thanks for responding Louis. My current therm has Black to 1, Green to 2, White to 3 & Red to 4. If I just follow color of wire (which instructions on new therm say not to do) I would put red to RH (I dont have air) Green to G for fan, White to W for heat but where does the Black go? It was on 1 before, what ever that was? Thanks

Are you sure you have a 24 volt system, because there are also line voltage systems (120volts) that would change everything. Make sure you know what voltage the system is

I was trying to install a new 5 wires thermostat replacing an old 4 wires. I used extra wire as c wire but the furnace terminal board side already has a wires attached to it(C and Y), which runs to out side compressor unit. when I attached the new run c wire to this c terminal it is blowing out my 3 amp fuse. where should I connect the c wire of the new thermostat then?
@loudepot

+M ATIQUE Use Y for the compressor

The red is the supply, the hot, the potential. Not the return. There is no C in your explanation because it's not absolutely necessary, because the W is the return for the heat, the G is the return for the fan, Y is the return for the ac. Now, the C is the neutral, so between the R which is hot and the C you'll have 24v. That is how you connect power to your thermostat so you don't keep running thru batteries. Speak accurately.

Great video Lou. However maybe you should have shown that the hot and neutral from that outlet coming from each side rather both from the same side.
