NOTE: This is not a permanent installation. And although it's working for me, I'm certain that some of my methods here are not the best or safest for antenna installations. Don't consider this as a guide for the "right" way to do things. Antennas attract lightning, so be careful.
It's finally up and working. And working very well! I've made many contacts on it and had the best signal reports I've ever received, especially on 75-80 meters.

This video was posted a while ago, but in case you are still wondering... Placing the 1:1 choke at the base will prevent the coax running to your house from acting as a counterpoise. The best placement of a 1:1 common mode choke with this type of antenna (EF 'random' wire) is at your radio.

Good morning Kevin, Just finished taking off the torrid ferrite core that was attached to the fed-line of the 9:1 unun transformer that I use to use for rfi/tvi/cmn suppression for the antenna I built on a 23' fiberglass kite pole with 33'-18g wire coiled around it using you're design up 34' from the tip to the ground. The torrid ferrite core like you said killed the antenna. Now its working great and has more gain than my 66'-18g wire attached to a 49:1 efhw transformer in a sloper configuration up 40'. The 4 counterpoise wires that was attached to the ground terminal have been moved also and didn't degrade its performance. It loaded up great on 11 meters and gives me the opportunity to listen to 80-10 meters. Currently studying for my amateur radio operator license and looking forward to getting on the air after I pass. You're video's have really helped me a great deal in my process. Hope to see more video's about vertical antennas from you in the near future.

Fine business, great installation and video. If I were a betting man, I would agree with the commenters who believe the choke is choking off your best counterpoise without radials, the transmission line outer. If your neighbor is going to install a wooden fence, you might consider asking him if you could attach an elevated radial to it and then re-apply youir choke to the transmission line. Radial placement has minimal or minor impact on azimuthal directionality in far field, more to do with driving point Z. I have used cheap plastic electric fence insulators and wire from Tractor Supply with good results.... In any case, its what ever works for your situation. I saw your FB video on the wind whpping through it WOW! Good job! 73, de K4WRF

Any frequency that your antenna tuner needs to make the antenna resonant , the matching your tuner does, does not allow all of your power to hit the antenna, the tuner heats up, and that is the power loss being eaten by your tuner.

Hi Kevin, Looks great. One thing to keep an eye on is the plastic bracket. Unless it's made from a UV stabilised plastic ('s' not 'z' for us down under), it will become brittle and break eventually. In my experience, 12-14 months outdoors though will depend on the wind loading. Now I know what to do with my squid pole :o)

I’ve been trying to find a way to do the same thing here, a semi-permanent non-resonant vertical just like this. I have a dog though. Where I want to mount the vertical is the same post our dog’s wire rope is connected. I can do a temporary antenna setup like this to at least test it out. I’ve been waiting for the weather to change so I can work from our porch for this. The weather has changed...

Have you tried doing a SWR sweep with and without the 1:1 choke? I am wondering if the antenna has a different resonance with coax in the conduit looking like a capacitor to ground. The 1:1 choke would have the effect of putting a resistor in series with this capacitance.

Curious if you resolved the rf choke problem? I've read type 2 core does not work as a choke? Type 31 is said to be best rf choke core? I have a Type 31 1:1 rf choke in series with Type 43 49:1 transformer with 65 ft EFHW that works "exceptionally" well. I am planning 9:1 UnUn on T200-2 Core with 53ft "random" wire as it will provide 6 meters. Type 2 seems to work better with 9:1 UnUn ; ) Thank You. . .

I am thinking of putting up a non resonant vertical similar to yours, but I am thinking about using aluminum tubing all the way up. I'm on 10-meters...could I use PVC pipe as a 'mast' to make a similar antenna? Figured to use 2-inch PVC as lowest section, and then two more 10-foot sections above that, each progressively smaller, and three tie-ropes running out from second section, for help with wind.
@loughkb
@loughkb 6 жыл бұрын
PVC should work ok. If you're only going for 10 meters, it doesn't have to be that tall anyway. A resonant vertical would be just over 16 feet tall with 4 16 foot radials and no 9:1 unun required.

I'm pretty sure the choke was killing the antenna due to lack of counterpoise wires at that time. Without the counterpoise wires, the unun relies on the shield of the coax to provide a counterpoise, so the choke was nulling that effect. With the coax buried underground, I'm not seeing any appreciable RF coming back on the shield, so I left the choke out. That fence is my neighbors and it's going away. He's in the process of tearing it out and putting up a wooden fence. So it's not an option any more.

Did you use the whole mast? Asking why because The top section is so week. This will be a great project for me. I want to get out portable, this would be fun. I could use this for my 3rd floor balcony, if I could go without the counterpoise. I have a guard rail I could attach to. Would that be enough?
@loughkb
@loughkb 6 жыл бұрын
I did use the whole mast. At the top section, I taped the wire to the mast every six inches down into the next section. That kept the end straight. You could run without the counterpoise if you have at least 20 feet of coax in a semi straight run from the unun back to the radio. The shield of the coax will act as the counterpoise, but will also radiate quite a bit.

@loughkb
@loughkb 6 жыл бұрын
The problem is the choke will prevent the coax shield from providing a counterpoise for the antenna. So it's not a problem as long as you run counterpoise wires or wire at the 9:1. If you provide a counterpoise, the choke should be ok. (that slipped my mind when I was first testing the antenna.

G'day Kevin, I'm wondering what formula you used for the 32 feet of wire and the coaxial length. Is your line of thinking could it be a 1/4 wave or 1/2 wave?
@loughkb
@loughkb 6 жыл бұрын
No math. The mast is 33 feet, with the pcv housing and mounting to the ground rod, 32 feet of wire fit. The coax length was dictated by the physical location of the antenna. It's not resonant, that's why I say a tuner is needed.
@n8nkqrp595
@n8nkqrp595 6 жыл бұрын
Fun video Kevin. Antenna ones are always interesting! Love 'em. I've never used a 9:1 unun with an antenna like yours. One thing confuses me: on 40, you have close to a 1/4 wave radiator. the feed point impedance should have a resistive component of 50 ohms (give or take). With a 9:1 transformer, won't your feedline SWR be close to 10:1? The losses with QRP would be too much, even on 40. I belive most of your common mode currents on the sheild of the coax will be shunted to ground via the capacitive coupling between the buried coax and earth - even when installed in PVC pipe. Take care!
@loughkb
@loughkb 6 жыл бұрын
With a resonant dipole, when at it's resonant frequency, the impedance at the end of the wire will be closer to 1K ohm. 50, at the center. It's usually high at the end, even when not at a resonant freq. So the 9:1 brings it down into a range that's easier for the antenna tuner to match to 50.
@n8nkqrp595
@n8nkqrp595 6 жыл бұрын
I still say that on 40, your radiator is ~1/4 wave, and is being fed at what is effectively the 'center of the dipole', given that your counterpoise is the 'missing half of the dipole'. I'd love to see an antenna analyzer placed at or near the feedpoint and see what we see both with and w/o the autotransformer or unun. Regardless, nice antenna!

if you don't common that ground wire with the ground rod used by your homes power company to install your power feed, you may get a big surprise if there is ever lightening that strikes your antenna. It will travel through your home looking for the other ground, and destroy everything in its path. Common all grounds with your power company ground.

Pretty pricey for simple hose clamps with a rubber(ish) sleeve. I've removed tape from other masts after being in the elements for years. It held up so well it was difficult to remove. The tape will do the job just fine and hold up for a few years at least. (And it's a LOT cheaper! ) ;-) If you were going to use the mast off and on, like for camping trips, field day, etc. then the clamp kit would be the way to go.

I feel I know where you're coming from Kevin. I'm an ex military diver who had a parachute accident during training before deployment to former Yugoslavia. That messed up my spine ending with a slightly below 40 degrees scoliosis in Th7 and later a compensatory curve on my lumbar column making disks pop into my spinal cord. Not exactly pleasant then and not much better now. This caused me to 'forced rethinking' of my career options leading to Unix system administration and later IT engineering, electronics R&D within the scientific community, etc... But I couldn't keep away from diving - since I then lived in the high arctic with the world's best diving waters (WW-II shipwrecks) and a magnificent Aurora. Then I suddenly realized that I had more then pain to deal with. I started to get severe physical 'crashes' where I suddenly became totally exhausted. Also mental activities caused these crashes with varying cognitive problems. This couldn't be 'rested away' but I had weeks on end with recuperation, not able to do much. Not work nor pleasure. This went on in periods but every time I did something 'challenging' beyond the normal - I crashed again. This naturally led to loss of work, my own clients, diving business, income, wife, etc, etc and not until 2016 I was finally diagnosed with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis or 'ME'. That's an extremely nasty condition with no known cure and uncertain origin but it's now believed that an infection triggers this autoimmune neurological disease. It very often strikes people with a an above average physique and activity level, like professional athletes, adventurers, documentary photographers and special forces personnel. Very nasty and sometimes totally handicapping disease that's now often called "the worst non-lethal disease there is". Non-lethal not being true in the worst cases but I don't like comparing diseases. Everyone has its own special charm. I'm trying to keep reasonably active those few days I'm capable of doing anything - like talking to people or mount an encrypted disk volume in Unix. It's that bad sometimes that trying to read something makes you feel physically ill - not to mention not getting any coherence in what you try to read. Getting into amateur radio was partly a 'side effect' of me being forced to quit everything else including living together with someone - which is more or less futile, but also a way of stimulate my 'prepping-nerve'. Narrow band, weak signal emergency communication is now my 'hobby' not to mention a way to secure contact with my daughter who lives back in my country of origin Sweden - almost no matter what happens. A very important thing for me. I stumbled on your channel when researching different antenna projects, which is what I might be able to do on REALLY 'good' days, and your channel is among my top three favorites! I really like your way of presenting your material in a pedagogical and non-bravado way. I wish you all the best with regards to 'good health and everything else (' good health 'being a very relative term at least for me these days) and I hope you continue to experiment and produce content for a very long time to come! That way I can get my questions answered too - also when I'm not capable of doing the experiments myself. Only slight downside is that it does not help my signal reception or propagation very much! 🤣 Stay safe, stay vertical and best wishes from Norway! /Mike

Wind loading is very light on this already light mast. Also, that PLA printed clamp is stronger than you might think. It's part of the experiment too, 3D printing the clamp. We had 20MPH winds last night with big gusts and that mast was really bending. It's held up so far. We're supposed to get even higher winds tonight and tomorrow. I might shoot a little video when it's really blowing.

Nice! I look forward to seeing how it stands up. A video would be cool. I'm over 100mi west of Chicago and the storms last night were terrible. Not much with Wind but lightning was unreal! Wind would be the main concern with the bracket but also UV weakening the plastic but since you said it would really only be a semi-temporary setup I didn't comment on that. Hopefully it works great! I mean if it comes down in the wind its not really going far so not a huge deal right.

That one is for portable use. I made a weatherproof version for the semi-permanent install.

hallo !

Your "Lightning" gap will help only for static build up. It will arc over if the the static DC voltage on an ungrounded (DC) antenna charges high enough to flash over at what ever gap you set, even without a direct strike . Also it may handle an induced EMP voltage from a nearby strike. If you get a direct strike, Man you got a direct strike, which can run down non conductors. It will fuse almost ANYTHING around including your ceramic tiled roof or wet washing on the line. Nothing reasonable can dissipate a direct strike. Laying everything down below the height of every thing around you will improve your chances but not guaranteed. Speak to Callum of DX Commander. He just had one. He still has the burn scars on his insurance policy to prove it.

Sounds like your coax is also acting as a counterpoise - so when you add the choke you are actually losing a bit of efficiency. Still odd it makes so much difference though. But that's the difference between theory and the real world, eh?

I didn't try the choke again after adding a couple of counterpoise wires, that might be the trick. But I'm just not seeing much in the way of RF back in the shack. I think putting the coax underground might have helped that.

"Semi permanent installation", yeah that's what I tell my wife too. Honey I just want to test my theory to see if it works, lol lol lol . Yes honey I'm burying the wires so you don't cut them when you cut the grass, when I'm on my radio, lol lol lol.

One more thing. BNC connectors - do not weather well. Not good connectors outdoors.

You have to put the transmatch between the feed line and the antenna! With your arrangement the vertical end is not the entire antenna. The bizarre combination of feed-line, 9:1 and antenna is radiating. even more weird will be the radiation pattern. I suppose you have a very strange kind a dipole with one half buried in the ground ;-) Maybe hat is the reason the 1:1 balun "kill" one half of the weird arrangement. With a transmatch you can match everything to a good SWR even a bicycle or a dummy load. This is not a clue if something is radiating well!

kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZyVi42af6-lnbs might help you on the non working 1: 1 choke ? He says spacing is important?

The choke worked. I didn't have a counterpoise wire on the balun at the time, so with the choke installed, the coax shield was no longer doing the job of counterpoise.
