The only drummer that could hold his own with Buddy Rich. Louie is truly magnificent.

There are however some other drummers who can also play just about anything technically. They're pretty scary, & shouldn't be underestimated, even though they're not as "famous."

end of an era here...that SNARE cracks SO good...dude had chops for a lifetime...these old school cats had magic in them...we need to go back to move forward...I get the "Neil P is great"...by many, but if you don't insert, "OK...but let's keep it real, Louie Bellson doesn't play prog rock, but as far as a musicians goes, well, even Neil would humbly say, "I cant hold the candle or cup of coffee to Mr Bellson!"

Buddy and Louie both played a lot of be bop style. But it was very subtle ghost strokes that were mostly covered up by the ride cymbal and band. You felt them more than heard them. If you watch their videos you can see them doing it. Buddy's left hand, that people marvel at, was just be bop. But played for big band style, not small combo style.
