Jamming with Victor Wooten and Pat McDonald on a track called 'Mysterious Phone Call' from the album Something Live by Louie Shelton.
1:50 - Victor Wooten gets down
4:00 - Pat McDonalds drum solo
Over the past several decades you would have heard Louie Shelton’s signature guitar riffs and solos on more hit records than any other session guitarist in history.

I want to be Louie Shelton when I grow up. He is the cleanest, smoothest and most tasteful guitarist around. Such a massive talent. In this instance, the guitar is clearly and extension of the man. They are one entity. This is an outstanding tune and the other musicians on this cut are as equally exceptional. Those drums. That bass. WOW!

As I understand, and in shorthand, Glen Campbell was THE MAN on the guitar in LA sessions and was a regular of The Wrecking Crew. He met Louie in New Mexico and as fellow Arkansans they hit it off and Glen encouraged Louie to go to LA so Louie did. Glen was just gettin his solo career together and he introduced Louie to producers and arrangers. Sometimes Glen was not able to make a date and he told them to let Louie cover it, you know the rest of the story. Also heard Louis passed along the same favor to Larry Carlton, but everybody in the business already knew Carlton, as he was a child prodigy on the LA music scene and well known. But Larry cites Louie as a big influence and he did help Larry get some session work. Interesting that about all of the Wrecking Crew members were great readers but neither of the Arkansans could read music. In Campbell’s case he would take a reader aside before the session and have them make a quick run through and Glen locked in on it, they said he had perfect pitch and knew his guitar so well that he would play the first run so well (as could the others) that many of the times their first efforts were used on the album. The producers loved them because studio time was expensive and if great players nailed the song first time, that saved enough money to do another. Once they did 4 ALBUMS in one day! Anyway, Louie was Glen 2.0, and Larry Carlton next. Years overlapped but when one retired the next one was considered THE MAN in their hay days.

Love both Glen and Louie. Glen could play faster. But Louie is a unique guitarist and producer (for Seals & Crofts and others) who can play ANY genre. NOBODY is as versatile as Louie in my opinion.

Mr. Shelton is a guitar God! Some of the very best guitar pieces ever to bless the airwaves. Victor and Pat are way way up there too. I gotta see him play one day. Thanks for sharing.

Louis gets such a clean, bright sound - maybe that is because he is a clean, bright dude ! Read "The Music Lesson" by Victor Wootten - it will change the way you think about what it is to be a musician

Louie has the Genes of every guitarist you ever heard. Must mean they copied mr Sheltons licks in many cases. Sounds like Larry Carlton was a big fan!
